Vitrectomy in Progressive Outer Retinal Necrosis (P.O.R.N. Syndrome) in AIDS

SUMMARY

We present a case of one AIDS patient with stoblesed PORN syndrome in one eye (VA 20/200) and a small peripheral area of necrosis in the retina of the fellow eye (VA 20/20).

The second eye was profilactivelly treated with vitrectomy, implant of silicone oil and endolaser. The patient received also concomitant IV acyclovir (30 mg/kg/d) for 10 days. One week after the surgery the VA was 20/20 with appearent lack of activity of the retinitis.

The patient returned in 3 weeks with vision of motion hands in the left eye secondary to a massive retinal necrosis and retinal detachment.

This case shows that even radical surgery done at the initial phase of the disease does not interfer in the natural history of the PORN syndrome.
