Presumed lid tuberculosis simulating a hordeolum in a patient with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

SUMMARY

Purpose: To report a case of presumed lid tuberculosis in a patient with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

Method: A 38-year-old white female, diagnosed Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), had a clinicai picture of an externai hordeolum, having being treated with to response. As the case worsened and a preseptal cellulitis developed, specific systemic antibiotics were introduced.

Result: There has been no improvement and an incisional biopsy of the lesion was performed, revealing a chronic granulomatous blepharitis with central caseating necrosis. After starting a tuberculostatic scheme, a dramatic improvement in inflammatory signs was observed and a complete resolution was achieved.

Conclusion: The possibility of tuberculosis as a cause of lid lesions in AIDS patients schould be recognized.
