Abstract

A "friagem" is a cold front which moves northward from southern Brazil to the Caribean coast of South America. A set of composite satellite pictures (2) of the American sector of the southern hemisphere as well as the record of daily temperatures in a secondary forest near Manaus are presented. The low temperatures and strong winds associated with this phenomenon have a profound effect on the environment of Amazonia.
