Abstract The growth of cities affects their permeable surface, which can unbalance hydrological cycles. The pervious concrete can be a viable solution to combat urban environmental impacts in this subject. This type of concrete can be told apart by the presence of interconnected pores and its drainage capacity. This paper aims to analyze the relationship between aggregate shape, mechanical resistance, and permeability of pervious concrete slabs containing steel slag. A Digital Image Processing (DIP) based method was used to measure aggregate shape properties. Three different mixes, using three types of coarse aggregate (gravel 12.5 mm, gravel 9.5 mm, and coarse steel slag), and a type of fine aggregate (fine slag) were tested, and flexural strength, flow, and permeability coefficients were obtained for the slabs. Results showed the potential of using steel slag, with higher flexural strength results (4.61 MPa). Indications of the relationship between aggregate shape parameters and slab properties were determined, with more polished, more angular, and more spherical material resulting in higher flexural strength values and lower permeability coefficient. The inverse relationship between the slabs’ permeability parameters and flexural strength was observed.

Resumo O crescimento das cidades afeta a sua superfície permeável, o que pode desequilibrar os ciclos hidrológicos. O concreto permeável pode ser uma solução viável para combater os impactos ambientais urbanos relacionados a esses problemas. Este tipo de concreto é caracterizado pela presença de poros interligados e pela sua alta capacidade de drenagem. Esta pesquisa visa analisar a relação entre a forma dos agregados, a resistência mecânica e a permeabilidade de placas de concreto permeáveis contendo escórias de aciaria. Utilizou-se um método baseado no Processamento Digital de Imagem (PDI) para avaliar as propriedades da forma do agregado. Foram testadas três misturas diferentes, utilizando três tipos de agregados graúdos (brita 12,5 mm, brita 9,5 mm, e escória grossa), e um tipo de agregado fino (escória fina), e foram obtidos valores resistência à flexão, fluxo e coeficientes de permeabilidade para as placas. Os resultados mostraram o potencial da utilização de escória de aciaria, com resultados de resistência à flexão elevados (4,61 MPa). Determinaram-se relações entre parâmetros de forma agregados e propriedades das placas, com um agregado mais polido, mais angular e mais esférico, resultando em valores de resistência à flexão mais elevados e coeficiente de permeabilidade mais baixos. Observou-se uma relação inversa entre os parâmetros de permeabilidade das lajes e a resistência à flexão.

Abstract The characterization of unsaturated soils using hydromechanical methods is an essential requirement in soil science. However, current laboratory techniques used to obtain soil water retention and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity curves are time-consuming. To address this issue, a method based on indirect measures (electrical resistivity/electrical conductivity) was developed to quantitatively characterize soils. A novel unsaturated semi-empirical hydrogeophysical model of soils was developed by incorporating the hydrodynamic, geophysical, and petrophysical characteristics of soils. The model assumes that the parameters influencing the variation in the volumetric water content with matric suction and electrical resistivity are the same. The electrical resistivity characteristic curve (ERCC) defines a function that correlates environmental variables, electrical resistivity, soil water status, matric suction, hydraulic and petrophysical parameters, and fluid electrical resistivity. Model validation confirmed that the proposed approach can estimate the soil water retention curve (SWRC) via the indirect measures, and the results agreed with the experimental data. This indicates that it is possible to determine the SWRC and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function of soil using the described approach.

Abstract Predicting the pile’s load capacity is one of the first steps of foundation engineering design. In geotechnical engineering, there are different ways of predicting soil resistance, which is one of the main parameters. The pile load test is the most accurate method to predict bearing capacity in foundations, as it is the most accurate due to the nature of the experiment. On the other hand, it is an expensive test, and time-consuming. Over the years, semi-empirical methods have played an important role in this matter. Initially, many proposed methods were based on linear regressions. Those are still mainly used, but recently the use of a new method has gained popularity in Geotechnics: Artificial Neural Network. Over the past few decades, Machine Learning has proven to be a very promising technique in the field, due to the complexity and variability of material and properties of soils. Considering that, this work has reviewed and mapped the literature of the main papers published in journals over the last decades. The aim of this paper was to determine the main methods used and lacks that can be fulfilled in future research. ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of a study on the evaluation of research and graduate education in the Netherlands. The policies implemented in the country over the last four decades have consolidated a sui generis and stable evaluation system, contributing to strengthening the country's scientific leadership on the international scene. The Dutch experience has inspired several countries, and its lessons could also be relevant for the Brazilian reality. In this context, this study aimed to analyse the main characteristics of the Dutch system, understand the role of self-evaluation within that system and present a self-evaluation experience conducted by a noteworthy research centre from Leiden University. From the lessons learned, we conclude by presenting some subsidies for improving the evaluation of graduate education conducted in Brazil. Abstract Future coaches bring to initial training personal experiences capable of developing beliefs and influencing the acquisition of their knowledge. These beliefs about teaching determine the actions and procedures adopted in classes. We sought to identify the beliefs about the teaching styles of future coaches in initial training in Physical Education at a community institution in the state of Santa Catarina. This quantitative research, which included an intentional and non-probabilistic sample, collected data from translated and adapted version of an Instrument to collect teachers' beliefs about their teaching styles used in physical education with 42 future trainers. The results revealed that the practical teaching style was the most used among all participants. When considering only those future coaches with professional experience in mandatory and/or non-mandatory internships, the teaching style with the highest score showed divergent production, whereas among future coaches with experience as athletes, the most scored style was reciprocal. It is concluded that the future coaches investigated had beliefs more focused on reproduction styles.

Resumo Os futuros treinadores trazem à formação inicial experiências pessoais capazes de desenvolver crenças e influenciar na aquisição de seus conhecimentos. Essas crenças sobre o ensino determinam as ações e procedimentos adotados nas aulas. Buscou-se identificar as crenças sobre os estilos de ensino dos futuros treinadores na formação inicial em Educação Física de uma instituição comunitária no estado de Santa Catarina. Esta pesquisa quantitativa, que contemplou uma amostra do tipo intencional e não-probabilística coletou dados a partir de uma versão traduzida e adaptada do Instrumento para coletar as crenças dos professores sobre seus estilos de ensino utilizados na educação física com 42 futuros treinadores. Os resultados revelaram que o estilo de ensino prático foi o mais utilizado entre todos os participantes. Ao considerar apenas aqueles futuros treinadores com experiência profissional em estágios obrigatórios e/ou não-obrigatório, o estilo de ensino com maior pontuação a produção divergente ao passo que entre os futuros treinadores com experiências enquanto atletas, o estilo mais pontuado foi o recíproco. Conclui-se que os futuros treinadores investigados apresentaram crenças mais voltadas aos estilos de reprodução.

Abstract This paper provides preliminary results on geothermal energy piles (GEPs) for the thermal climatization of structures founded on the typical tropical unsaturated soil of the central region of Brazil. The research employed a series of prototype simulations of a thermal pile embedded into a calibration chamber with compacted unsaturated soil. It closely simulates the behavior of a (prototype) section from real scale GEPs founded in the geotechnical media of the region, in terms of compactness, mineralogy, water content and thermal variables. One of the on-going thermal tests was numerically simulated with a Multiphysics commercial software to calibrate a model and expand the results to possible scenarios of distinct (laboratory) GEP performance. The analyses will base future simulations of typical foundation layouts for large-scale structures founded on tropical soils of the region to verify the thermal energy efficiency under average operational conditions. Besides the known limitations of this research, still at early stage, an initial assessment was achieved to design shallow geothermal systems for local conditions.

Abstract This paper explores the potential of machine learning techniques to predict the soil water retention curve based on physical characterization parameters. Results from 794 water retention and suction points obtained from 51 different soils were used in the algorithm. The soil properties used are the percentages of gravel, sand, silt, and clay, the plasticity index, the porosity, and the relation between the volumetric water content and total suction. The data were used as input for machine learning estimators to predict the volumetric water content of a soil with specified physical characterization parameters and suction, the techniques of artificial intelligence were developed in python. Results show that an extremely randomized trees' estimator can reach a coefficient of determination of 0.99 in the training dataset, with a coefficient of 0.90 in the cross-validation and testing dataset, which measures the generalization capacity. Furthermore, a continuous function can be obtained by fitting a model such as Cavalcante & Zornberg, or van Genuchten, or Costa & Cavalcante (bimodal) to the predictions of the machine learning for use in numerical methods. These results indicate that the proposed machine learning estimator can become an interesting alternative to estimate the soil water retention curve in engineering practice. Abstract Mining is an important economic activity in the modern world. However, despite the generated benefits, mining produces tremendous volumes of tailings, an environmental liability with numerous adverse effects. Researches about contaminant transport in tailings dam are important to assess the degree of contamination and to propose preventive or remedial measures. In geotechnical practice, the flow of solutes is generally characterized by numerical solution of the Richards equation to describe water movement followed by advection-dispersion equation to describe contaminant movement. This study aimed to model and simulate contaminant transport in a laboratory column test, using a new analytical formulation and mathematical codes, through tailings in transient unsaturated conditions. The analytical solution for the Richards equation was used to simulate the variation in the volumetric water content and to determine the transient contaminant plume using the advection-dispersion equation subsequently. The models were used to calibrate experimental data from hydraulic characterization and contamination tests. Finally, the normalized contaminant plume (cw/c0) was simulated as a function of time and space. Comparisons with experimental data showed that the analytical formulations adequately expressed the process of contaminant infiltration through the unsaturated porous medium. The formulations offered effectively and are configured as a new approach to solve various contamination problems in transient unsaturated conditions, providing insights into many complex processes that occur in the lab tests and requires far less computational effort compared with current programs to modeling the solute transport using numerical solutions, as the versatile commercial Software HYDRUS.

Abstract Allying technology, theory and engineering practice is one of the main challenges of modern foundation engineering. Current foundation and retaining walls designs may lead to oversizing or undersizing due to the spatial variability of the stratigraphic profile. As the design procedure of piled foundations involves defining the setting depth of the tip, sometimes the piles may not behave as expected, as the soil mass may change significantly even in a small region. In this paper, a study was conducted on the geoenergetic behavior of the soil mass and of the piles of a construction site located in Brasília, DF, Brazil. Previous studies showed that the energy needed to drill a continuous flight auger pile (CFAP) can be related to the strength of the drilled strata. Therefore, a methodological framework was built to further discuss how the geomechanical behavior of CFAPs foundations could be assessed by analyzing the energy needed to drill such piles. Statistical methods, in special the Bootstrap method, were used to assess the possible influences of construction procedures on pile behavior. It was studied how the execution energies of piles vary with initial depth and relative position in the terrain, as well as the influences that they suffer because of the order of execution within a same foundation group and due to the proximity to surrounding retaining walls. The proposed methodology can be used to improve the energy control procedure and performance evaluation of CFAPs, allowing a complementary reliability assessment for the foundation and retaining walls designs and implementations.

ABSTRACT Brazilian spotted fever, a zoonotic disease transmitted by ticks, is caused by Rickettsia rickettsii. We report a fulminant case of this zoonosis in a healthy 46-year-old military man in the urban region of Rio de Janeiro city, in October, 2021. Ticks and capybaras (Amblyomma sculptum, Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, respectively) were identified in the military fields, pointing to the participation of this large synanthropic rodent, recognized as an efficient amplifier host of Rickettsia rickettsii in Brazil. As the military population is considered a risk group for spotted fever, it is necessary to alert health professionals to the importance of the early detection of the disease and its adequate management, mainly in populations that are particularly at risk of exposure to ticks, in order to avoid fatal outcomes.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a composição físico-química de sucos de uvas 'Bordô' e 'BRS Cora' cultivadas em sistema de produção orgânico na região da Serra do Sudeste, no sul do Brasil, bem como comparar os resultados das cultivares com dados de outras regiões produtoras e com as exigências das leis brasileiras para suco de uva integral. As uvas utilizadas provieram de um vinhedo comercial, especificamente dos ciclos produtivos de 2016-2017, 2017-2018 e 2018-2019. Os sucos foram elaborados pelo método de arraste de vapor e avaliados quanto à sua composição físico-química. Os frutos mostraram níveis adequados dos parâmetros necessários para a produção de sucos. Em geral, os sucos apresentaram teores de compostos bioativos semelhantes aos encontrados em outras regiões produtoras. Os sucos de 'Bordô' das três safras avaliadas apresentaram diferenças significativas em vários dos parâmetros, as quais foram atribuídas à influência do clima sobre a maturação das uvas. Os sucos de 'BRS Cora' apresentaram resultados qualitativos de alta consistência, mesmo sob as tão distintas condições meteorológicas dos três ciclos produtivos. Os sucos atendem às regulações brasileiras vigentes para o suco de uva integral, exceto quanto aos valores de sólidos solúveis, que são severamente reduzidos pela técnica de extração utilizada.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the physicochemical composition of juices from the 'Bordô' and 'BRS Cora' grapes grown in an organic production system in the Serra do Sudeste region, in Southern Brazil, as well as to compare the cultivar results with data from other producing regions and with the requirements of the Brazilian regulation for whole grape juice. The used grapes came from a commercial vineyard, especifically from the 2016-2017, 2017-2018, and 2018-2019 production cycles. The juices were prepared by the steam drag method and evaluated for their physicochemical composition. The fruit showed suitable values for the parameters necessary for grape juice production. In general, the juices showed bioactive compounds contents similar to those obtained in other regions. The 'Bordô' juices evaluated in the three production cycles showed significant differences for several variables, which were attributed to the influence of weather on grape maturity. The juices of 'BRS Cora' showed high-consistency qualitative results even under the very distinct meteorological conditions of the three production cycles. The juices comply with the current Brazilian regulation for whole grape juice, except for soluble solids, which are severely lowered by the used extraction technique.

Resumo O atraso em obras é observado globalmente na construção civil e afeta a economia dos países, sendo fundamental a identificação de suas causas para a minimização das consequências. O objetivo deste trabalho é a identificação das causas de atraso de obras em edificações e a análise de suas correlações pela análise fatorial estatística. A metodologia de pesquisa incluiu uma Revisão Sistemática da Literatura (RSL), uma Pesquisa Survey, pormeio de questionários e entrevistas; assim como a identificação das principais causas de atraso pelo Índice de Importância Relativa (RII) e a Curva ABC. Porfim, efetuou-se a análisefatorial das causas de atraso; não se limitando apenas a identificação das mesmas. Os resultados demonstraram que as 12 causas identificadas são correlacionadas a 4 fatores de atraso, que explicam 69,18% da variância da amostra: gestão de suprimentos (21,41%); gestão da mão de obra (20,79%); gestão do projeto(17,64%) e gestão das condições climáticas (9,34%). Conclui-se que os fatores de atraso citados podem ser considerados como deficiências de gestão dos empreendimentos e que a pesquisa aprofundou o conhecimento sobre atrasos na construção, contribuindo na fronteira do conhecimento para mitigação deste problema presente em váriospaíses, principalmente os países em desenvolvimento.

Abstract The delay in civil construction works is observed globally and affects the economy of countries. Therefore, identifying the causes of delays is of paramount importance to minimize their consequences. This paper aims at identifying the causes of delay in construction works and their analysis and existing correlations through statistical factor analysis. The research methodology included a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), a Survey Research through questionnaires and interviews was conducted, as well as the identification of the main causes of delay through the Relative Importance Index (RIL) and the ABC Curve. Finally, factor analysis of the causes of delay was performed, not limiting only to their identification. The results showed that the 12 identified causes are correlated to 4 delay factors, which account for 69.18% of the sample variance: supply management (21.41%); workforce management (20,79%); project management (17.64%) and management of climatic conditions (9.34%). It is concluded hereby that the delay factors mentioned herein can be considered management deficiencies in the projects and that the research has expanded the knowledge on construction delays, thus contributing to the frontier of knowledge to mitigate this problem in several countries, especially developing ones.

Abstract Several regions in Brazil and the world suffer from the presence of collapsible soils. The development of theories for understanding the phenomenon is significant because the increase of water content is associated with several reasons (e.g., precipitation, rupture of sewage, and water systems). Although some theories explain the behavior of various types of soils, they fail to explain collapsible and structured soils. In this research, an alternative interpretation of the consolidation theory is verified and calibrated for collapsible soil. The alternative model was applied to experimental data from a latosol from southeastern Brazil, and comparisons with the classical theory showed a difference in the saturated hydraulic conductivity of around 100 times. The observation showed promising results compared with the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the field (Guelph Permeameter). Furthermore, consolidation tests verified the collapse potential, the variation of consolidation coefficient and saturated hydraulic conductivity, and the total settlement prevision due to the presence of bleach and washing powder.

ABSTRACT Antiresorptive therapy is the main form of prevention of osteoporotic or fragility fractures. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a relatively rare but severe adverse reaction to antiresorptive and antiangiogenic drugs. Physicians and dentists caring for patients taking these drugs and requiring invasive procedures face a difficult decision because of the potential risk of MRONJ. The aim of this study was to discuss the risk factors for the development of MRONJ and prevention of this complication in patients with osteoporosis taking antiresorptive drugs and requiring invasive dental treatment. For this goal, a task force with representatives from three professional associations was appointed to review the pertinent literature and discuss systemic and local risk factors, prevention of MRONJ in patients with osteoporosis, and management of established MRONJ. Although scarce evidence links the use of antiresorptive agents in the context of osteoporosis to the development of MRONJ, these agents are considered a risk factor for this complication. Despite the rare reports of MRONJ in patients with osteoporosis, the severity of symptoms and impact of MRONJ in the patients' quality of life make it imperative for health care professionals to consider this complication when planning invasive dental procedures.
