ABSTRACT Inside the Brazilian semi-arid region (Caatinga biome) there are vegetation refuges from other biomes that are present mainly at greater elevations in ancient geological formations such as Chapada do Araripe. This study aimed to understand the structure, diversity and floristic similarity of a fragment of humid forest in order to support conservation strategies for this community in Chapada do Araripe, southern Ceará (708m Alt.), an area of relevant ecological, cultural and scenic value. In 13 parcels of 25x25m (0.8 ha) all individuals with DBH ≥ 5cm were inventoried, observing total height. Floristic similarity was observed using the Jaccard method, comparing it with seven other areas in different regions of the Brazil. Sixty-six species were found distributed in 34 families, in a total of 1,544 individuals with DA=1,997.30 ind.ha-1 and AB =32,618 m²ha-1. Fabaceae (25.75%) and Myrtaceae (6%) had the highest number of species and Brosimum gaudichaudii had the highest IVI. The Shannon index (H') was 3.13 and the Pielou equability (J') was 0.75. The beta diversity, compared with other areas of humid forest (core and disjunct), was considered high and the statistics showed greater similarity with the area of the mesoregion of Pernambuco forest. The results allow the characterization of the area as a vegetational refuge of humid forest, corroborating the Refuge Theory and showing strong penetration of savanna species (“Cerradão”, Cerrado, Caatinga/“Carrasco”), emphasizing the action of climatic impulses that occurred in the Quaternary and pointing to the need to conservation strategies due to accelerated anthropism.

RESUMO No interior da região semiárida brasileira (bioma Caatinga), há ocorrência de refúgios de vegetação de outros biomas que se apresentam principalmente em topos de formações geológicas do período Pré-Cambriano, como a Chapada do Araripe. Este trabalho objetivou o conhecimento da estrutura, diversidade e similaridade florística de um fragmento de mata úmida na Chapada do Araripe, sul do Ceará (708m Alt.), visando subsidiar estratégias de conservação dessa comunidade, área de relevante valor ecológico, cultural e paisagístico. Em 13 parcelas de 25x25m (0,8 ha), foram inventariados todos os indivíduos com DAP ≥ 5cm, observando-se altura total. A similaridade florística foi observada pelo método de Jaccard a partir da comparação com outras sete áreas em diferentes regiões do Brasil. Foram encontradas 66 espécies distribuídas em 34 famílias, num total de 1.544 indivíduos com DA=1.997,30 ind.ha-1 e AB=32,618 m²ha-1. Fabaceae (25,75%) e Myrtaceae (6%) apresentaram maior número de espécies e Brosimum gaudichaudii apresentou maior IVI. O índice de Shannon (H’) foi 3,13 e a equabilidade de Pielou (J’) foi 0,75. A diversidade beta, comparada com outras áreas de mata úmida (core e disjuntas), foi considerada alta e a estatística apontou maior similaridade com área da mesorregião da mata pernambucana. Os resultados permitem caracterizar a área como refúgio vegetacional de mata úmida, corroborando com a teoria dos refúgios e evidenciam forte penetração de espécies savânicas (cerradão, cerrado, caatinga/carrasco) enfatizando a atuação de impulsos climáticos ocorridos no Quaternário e apontando para a necessidade de estratégias de conservação devido ao antropismo acelerado.

RESUMO Objetivo: Analisar a cobertura das vacinas tríplice viral e contra poliomielite, a tendência temporal e a dependência espacial em crianças de até um ano no Brasil, entre 2011 e 2021. Métodos: Estudo ecológico com dados secundários das taxas de cobertura vacinal (CV), disponibilizadas pelo Sistema de Informação do Programa Nacional de Imunização. A análise de tendência ocorreu pelo método joinpoint, segundo regiões geográficas, estimando a variação percentual anual (APC) e seu respectivo intervalo de confiança (IC95%). Foram construídos mapas coropléticos de distribuição por região de saúde e, posteriormente, verificou-se a dependência espacial pela estatística de Moran. Resultados: Entre 2011 e 2021, as coberturas vacinais apresentaram queda no Brasil, tanto para tríplice viral (APC: −6,4%; IC95%: −9,0; −3,8) quanto para poliomielite (APC: −4,5%; IC95% −5,5; −3,6). Houve declínio da cobertura de ambas as vacinas em todas as regiões geográficas ao longo dos anos de estudo, exceto no Sul e no Centro-Oeste para a vacina tríplice viral. Desde 2015, poucas regionais de saúde do país atingiram a CV adequada (≥95 a <120%). As regiões sanitárias do Norte e do Nordeste apresentaram clusters do tipo baixo-baixo na análise univariada para ambos os imunobiológicos. Conclusão: É premente considerar estudos como este para o planejamento de estratégias mais eficazes à imunização de crianças, sobretudo em áreas de maior queda. Desse modo, pode-se romper as barreiras do acesso à imunização, dada a heterogeneidade brasileira, e ampliar o acesso a informações fidedignas que aumentem a confiança na eficácia vacinal.

Conclusions: It is urgent to consider studies like this one for the planning of more effective strategies for immunizing children, especially in areas with higher falls. ABSTRACT Nutrient prediction models applied to tree species from Brazilian Caatinga can be a crucial tool in understanding this biome. The study aimed to fit a mixed model to predict nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) content in tree species native to the Caatinga biome located in Floresta municipality, Pernambuco State – PE, Brazil. The following species were considered the area’s most important and evaluated in the present study: Poincianella bracteosa (Tul.) L.P.Queiroz, Mimosa ophtalmocentra Mart. ex Benth, Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart, Cnidoscolus quercifolius (Mull. Arg.) Pax. & Hoffm, and Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil (Griseb.) Altschul. Four trees, representing the average circumference in each diameter class, were harvested for NPK quantification. The Spurr model was evaluated for NPK prediction, and species inclusion as a random effect was significant (p > 0.05) in all models. The Spurr model with fixed and random effects presented better statistics than fixed-effect models in all parameters for all nutrients. Generated NPK predicting equations can be a handy tool to understand the impact of wood extraction over Caatinga’s biogeochemical cycles and guide forest management strategies in semi-arid regions of the world.

RESUMO Modelos de predição de nutrientes aplicados a espécies arbóreas da Caatinga brasileira podem ser uma ferramenta crucial para a compreensão do bioma. O estudo teve como objetivo ajustar um modelo misto para prever os teores de nitrogênio (N), fósforo (P) e potássio (K) em espécies arbóreas nativas do bioma Caatinga localizadas no município de Floresta, Pernambuco – PE, Brasil. As seguintes espécies foram as mais importantes da área e avaliadas no presente estudo: Poincianella bracteosa (Tul.) L.P.Queiroz, Mimosa ophtalmocentra Mart. ex Benth, Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart, Cnidoscolus quercifolius (Mull. Arg.) Pax. & Hoffm e Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil (Griseb.) Altschul. Quatro árvores, representando a circunferência média em cada classe de diâmetro, foram colhidas para quantificação de NPK. O modelo Spurr foi avaliado para predição de NPK e a inclusão de espécies como efeito aleatório foi significativa (p > 0,05) em todos os modelos. O modelo de Spurr com efeitos fixos e aleatórios apresentou estatísticas melhores que os modelos de efeito fixo em todos os parâmetros para todos os nutrientes. As equações de previsão de NPK geradas podem ser uma ferramenta útil para entender o impacto da extração de madeira sobre os ciclos biogeoquímicos da Caatinga e orientar estratégias de manejo florestal em regiões semiáridas do mundo.

Abstract Ferns and lycophytes are plants often overlooked in most floristic inventories, leading to considerable gaps in the knowledge of their diversity and geographic distribution. To address this issue, we conducted a study aimed at reducing these gaps for the restingas of Santa Catarina, south Brazil. This involved conducting a series of field works in strategic sites within the municipality of Laguna, representing all three main restingas phytophysiognomies (herbaceous/subshrubby, shrubby, and arboreal), across different abiotic conditions and conservation degrees. Two species of lycophytes (one family) and 31 ferns (14 families) were recorded in the restingas of Laguna, almost three-quarters of the diversity reported for the restingas of the state of Santa Catarina. Besides, 11 of these species are mentioned here for the first time for Santa Catarina restingas. These numbers were obtained through extensive field surveys, but considering the area of restinga remnants, some of which are still relatively unexplored, it is plausible that the diversity of ferns and lycophytes in Laguna may be even greater. These findings reinforce the need to carry out floristic surveys aimed at ferns and lycophytes in the different phytophysiognomies of the restinga, because only with an increase of sampling effort, considering the environmental heterogeneity, it will be possible to better estimate the diversity of these and other plant groups. This study also provides important data for the management and conservation of the restingas, which are among the ecosystems historically most impacted by human activities.

Resumo Samambaias e licófitas geralmente são negligenciadas na maioria dos inventários florísticos. Consequentemente existem lacunas consideráveis no conhecimento sobre a diversidade e distribuição geográfica desses grupos. Neste artigo são apresentados os resultados de um estudo realizado com o objetivo de ajudar a reduzir as lacunas de conhecimento sobre esses grupos nas restingas de Santa Catarina, sul do Brasil. Para tal, foram realizadas coletas em áreas específicas do município de Laguna que representam as três principais fitofisionomias de restinga (herbácea/subarbustiva, arbustiva e arbórea) em variadas condições abióticas e graus de conservação. Foram registradas duas espécies de licófitas (uma família) e 31 samambaias (14 famílias) nas restingas de Laguna, englobando quase 75% da diversidade conhecida para as restingas de Santa Catarina. Além disso, 11 espécies são aqui citadas pela primeira vez para as restingas do estado. Esses resultados são produtos de um extensivo esforço de coleta, porém, considerando a área dos remanescentes de restingas, alguns ainda escassamente explorados, é plausível que a diversidade de licófitas e samambaias em Laguna pode ser ainda maior. Esses dados reforçam a importância de inventários florísticos com enfoque em samambaias e licófitas nas diferentes fitofisionomias das restingas, pois somente com um aumento do esforço de amostragem, considerando a heterogeneidade ambiental, será possível estimar mais acuradamente a diversidade para este e outros grupos de plantas. Este estudo também fornece dados para o manejo e a conservação das restingas, que estão entre os ambientes historicamente mais impactados por atividades humanas.

Abstract Lophius gastrophysus is an exploited deep-sea demersal fishing resource in the Southeast-South region of Brazil, a capture target for the twin trawl multi-specific bottom trawling fleet. Considered a prized fish, it is commonly processed on board, retaining commercial cuts of the tail called colas. Thus it is difficult to recognize the original length of the specimens and, consequently, to assess the dynamics of sources and the impacts of catches. Individual length and weight data were used to generate body predictive models correlated to the monkfish cola. The parameters of growth, mortality and exploitation rate were also estimated from the size structure of Lophius gastrophysus captured by the industrial bottom trawling fleet in Southeast Brazil between May 2013 and April 2015, assessing monkfish stock based on indirect estimates of life history information. All predictive models of body size showed coefficients of determination above 0.9 (P <0.001), indicating good data adjustments. The growth parameters were determined by the minimum residual variance methodology, being: L∞ = 92.4 cm and k = 0.158/year. The size structure tended to increase with depth in the spring. Individuals under the age of sexual maturity contributed significantly to catches. The length of first sexual maturation was estimated at 48.6 cm and the recruitment age was between 6 and 7 years. The coefficients of total, natural, fishing and exploitation rates were estimated at: Z = 0.676; M = 0.241; F = 0.436 and E = 0.644. The fishing mortality rate was higher than the reference value (E > 0.50) indicating a state of overexploitation of the southeast most part of stock. A review of the current Brazilian legislation established for the species on the southeast coast is recommended.

Resumo Moringa oleífera Lam. é uma planta arbórea pertencente à família Moringaceae distribuída em áreas tropicais e que tem ganhado enorme atenção nas últimas décadas. Esta pesquisa é uma revisão sobre a associação entre extratos aquosos de folhas de M. oleifera e diabetes mellitus e compreender suas funções farmacológicas e mecanismos subjacentes. O refinamento da pesquisa demonstrou o potencial farmacêutico da M. oleifera e seus fitoquímicos, dado seu efeito antidiabético. A análise prospectiva mostrou a quantidade de aplicação dentro do IPC A61K na área da saúde. Os metabólitos secundários presentes em M. oleifera, glucosinolatos, flavonóides e compostos fenólicos podem ser responsáveis, em parte, pelas ações hipoglicemiantes de controle da doença. Os glucosinolatos, quando metabolizados por enzimas salivares, dão origem a sulforafanos que atuam na prevenção do diabetes tipo 2 e na redução da resistência à insulina. Os flavonóides interagem com as enzimas intestinais modificando o metabolismo dos carboidratos, regulando os níveis glicêmicos, além de aumentar a sensibilidade à insulina. Os compostos fenólicos aumentam a expressão dos transportadores de glicose (GLUT4) e reduzem a síntese de ácidos graxos e colesterol, contribuindo para a redução da resistência à glicose e controle da glicemia. Moringa oleifera pode ser usada como terapia complementar do diabetes tipo 2.

Abstract Moringa oleifera is an arboreal plant belonging to the family Moringaceae distributed in tropical areas and has gained enormous attention in the last decades. This research is a review on the association between aqueous extracts of M. oleifera leaves and diabetes mellitus and understanding its pharmacological functions and underlying mechanisms. The research refinement demonstrated the pharmaceutical potential of M. oleifera and its phytochemicals, given its antidiabetic effect. The prospective analysis showed the amount of application within IPC A61K in health area. The secondary metabolites present in M. oleifera, glucosinolates, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds may be responsible, in part, for the disease control hypoglycemic actions. Glucosinolates, when metabolized by salivary enzymes, give rise to sulforaphanes that act in preventing type 2 diabetes and in reducing insulin resistance. Flavonoids interact with intestinal enzymes by modifying carbohydrate metabolism by regulating glycemic levels, in addition to increasing insulin sensitivity. Phenolic compounds increase the expression of glucose transporters (GLUT4) and reduce the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol, contributing to the reduction of glucose resistance and blood sugar control. Moringa oleifera can be used as complementary therapy of the type-2 diabetes.

Abstract Myomorphic and hystricomorphic rodents are vital for maintaining various ecosystems around the planet. This review enables a better understanding of how these rodents respond to environmental factors and adapt to climate adversities. Innumerable factors, such as photoperiod, rainfall, and temperature, can impair or contribute to the quality of rodent reproductive parameters. Prolonged animal exposure to high ambient temperatures alters thermoregulation mechanisms and causes testicular and ovarian tissue degeneration and hormonal deregulation. Photoperiod influences the biological circannual rhythm and reproductive cycles of rodents because it strongly regulates melatonin secretion by the pineal gland, which modulates gonadotropic hormone secretion. Rainfall quantity directly regulates the abundance of fruits in an ecosystem, which modulates the reproductive seasonality of species which are most dependent on a seasonal fruit-based diet. Species with a more diversified fruit diet have smaller reproductive seasonality. As such, habitats are chosen by animals for various reasons, including the availability of food, sexual partners, intra-and inter-specific competition, and predation. This knowledge allows us to monitor and establish management plans to aid in conservation strategies for wild rodent species.

The present prospective work of scientific articles related to foods and natural products with anti-Covid activity in databases in order to present a scientific community, to governments and society as main foods, nutraceuticals and medicinal plants as strategies used by countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. A review of articles on food, medicinal plants and biotechnology was carried out in databases of scientific articles such as: CAPES journals, PubMed, Elsevier's Science Direct, Willey on library library, Taylor &amp; Francis Springer-Nature database, BMC, Hindawi, Scielo, ACS - American Chemical Society, Google Scholar, in addition to the Patent Database “The LENS” and “Questel-Orbit”. Foods used in daily life such as garlic, ginger, turmeric, sour orange, vegetables, lactobacilli demonstrate proven anti-virus action. Medicinal plants used by Traditional Chinese, Korean and Indian Medicine also demonstrate anti-Covid activity and used during the coronavirus outbreak. Some medicinal plants, green propolis extract, red propolis extract, royal gelly, polen, honey have also been cited as anti-covid, natural anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory products.

O presente trabalho prospectou artigos científicos relacionadas à alimentos e produtos naturais com atividade anti-Covid com o intuito de apresentar, à comunidade científica, aos governos e à sociedade, dados sobre as principais estratégias nutracêuticas, biotecnológicas e plantas medicinais utilizadas em alguns países durante o enfrentamento da pandemia COVID-19. A revisão de artigos sobre alimentos, plantas medicinais e produtos biotecnológicos foi realizada nas bases de dados periódicos da CAPES, PubMed, Science Direct, Willey on line library, Springer-Nature, Taylor &amp; Francis, BMC, Hindawi, Scielo, ACS – American Chemical Society, Google acadêmico, “The LENS” e Questel-Orbit. Alimentos de uso frequente como alho, gengibre, cúrcuma, laranja azeda, vegetais e lactobacilos demonstraram ação anti-coronavirus comprovada. Foram descritos usos de plantas medicinais da Medicina tradicional Chinesa, Coreana, Indiana bastante utilizadas durante a pandemia. Algumas plantas medicinais e nutracêuticos como: extrato de própolis verde e extrato de própolis vermelha brasileiras, geleia real, pólen e mel também foram citados como produtos anti-covid, antiinflamatórios naturais e imunomodulatórios.

Resumo Este estudo objetivou investigar saberes de alunos de medicina sobre espiritualidade e religiosidade no cuidado ao paciente. Trata-se de pesquisa exploratória, descritiva, quantitativa, pautada no Spirituality and Brazilian Medical Education, desenvolvida em duas escolas médicas do Ceará, Brasil. Os 437 participantes preencheram questionário posteriormente processado por análise descritiva. Os resultados apontaram que esses estudantes conhecem os significados e a relevância de espiritualidade e religiosidade na assistência ao paciente, mas ainda não se sentem preparados para a abordagem completa, em virtude das limitações de aprendizagem na formação acadêmica. Conclui-se que precisam aprender mais sobre a temática para efetiva abordagem do assunto com o paciente. Para tanto, é importante que as escolas médicas acrescentem o tema à matriz curricular.

Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate the knowledge of medical students about spirituality and religiosity in relation to patient care. It is an exploratory, descriptive, quantitative research, based on Spirituality and Brazilian Medical Education, developed in two Medical Schools of Ceará, Brazil. A total of 437 medical students answered a questionnaire, which was processed by descriptive analysis. The results showed that medical students know the meaning and relevance of spirituality and religiosity in the patient care process, however, they do not feel ready to approach the matter in a more complete way because of limitations in academic training. It is concluded that these students need to learn more about the subject for an effective approach to the patient and, therefore, it is important that medical schools add this subject to their curricula.

Resumen Este estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar los saberes de los estudiantes de medicina sobre espiritualidad y religiosidad en el cuidado del paciente. Se trata de una investigación exploratoria, descriptiva, cuantitativa, basada en la Spirituality and Brazilian Medical Education, desarrollada en dos Facultades Médicas de Ceará, Brasil. Los 437 participantes completaron un cuestionario procesado posteriormente por análisis descriptivo. Los resultados señalaron que estos estudiantes conocen los significados y la relevancia de la espiritualidad y la religiosidad en la asistencia al paciente, pero todavía no se sienten preparados para un abordaje completo, en virtud de las limitaciones del aprendizaje en la formación académica. Se concluye que necesitan aprender más sobre la temática para un abordaje efectivo del asunto con el paciente. Para ello, es importante que las facultades médicas añadan este tema a la matriz curricular.

RESUMO Introdução: A obesidade em adolescentes tem aumentado em todo o mundo, geralmente associada a hábitos alimentares inadequados e inatividade física. Objetivo: Comparar a força muscular absoluta e relativa com a massa corporal (MC), massa livre de gordura (MLG) e MLG localizada dos membros superiores e inferiores entre adolescentes obesos e não obesos. Métodos: Em 39 adolescentes do sexo masculino (entre 13 e 17 anos) foram verificados MC, estatura e índice de massa corporal (IMC). A composição corporal foi medida por absorciometria de raios-x de dupla energia (DXA) e a força máxima de membros superiores e inferiores foi estimada por um teste de repetição máxima (1RM). Os participantes foram divididos em três grupos: eutrófico (n = 11), sobrepeso (n = 14) e obeso (n = 14). Utilizou-se o teste One-way ANOVA para comparar as variáveis, seguido de teste post hoc de Bonferroni para comparações múltiplas, para as correlações relevantes, usou-se o coeficiente de correlação de Pearson e a regressão linear múltipla foi usada para verificar a influência das variáveis antropométricas, composição corporal e a força muscular dos membros superiores e inferiores. Resultados: Os adolescentes obesos e com sobrepeso tinham força muscular absoluta similar aos dos eutróficos, sendo menores quando corrigidas pela MC (p < 0,001). Porém, a força muscular relacionada com a MLG e a MLG localizada foi semelhante entre os grupos, tanto em membros superiores como inferiores. A regressão linear mostrou que o IMC explicou 59% da variação da força muscular absoluta dos membros inferiores (β = 0,59, p < 0,05), a MLG explicou 84% da variação da força muscular absoluta dos membros superiores (β = 0,84, p < 0,01) e 68% dos membros inferiores (β = 0,68; p < 0,01), enquanto a massa gorda localizada foi inversamente associada nos membros inferiores (β = −0,53; p < 0,05). Conclusão: A força muscular dos membros superiores e inferiores, quando corrigida pela MLG localizada, não diferencia adolescentes com sobrepeso e eutróficos, indicando que a obesidade não afeta negativamente a geração de força muscular em rapazes obesos. ABSTRACT Introduction: Obesity in adolescents has increased worldwide, and is generally associated with poor eating habits and physical inactivity. Objective: To compare absolute and relative muscle strength with body mass (BM), fat-free mass (FFM) and localized FFM of upper and lower limbs among obese and non-obese adolescents. Methods: BM, height and body mass index (BMI) were verified in 39 male adolescents (aged 13-17 years). Body composition was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and maximal strength of upper and lower limbs was estimated by a one-repetition maximum (1RM) test. Participants were divided into three groups: eutrophic (normal weight) (n=11), overweight (n=14), and obese (n=14). One-way ANOVA was used to compare the variables, followed by a Bonferroni post-hoc test for multiple comparisons. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used for relevant correlations and multiple linear regression to verify the influence of anthropometric variables, body composition and muscle strength of upper and lower limbs. Results: Obese and overweight adolescents had absolute muscle strength values similar to those of the eutrophic adolescents, which were lower when corrected by BM (p<0.001). However, muscle strength related to FFM and localized FFM were similar between groups in both upper and lower limbs. Linear regression showed that BMI explained 59% of the variation in absolute muscle strength of the lower limbs (β=0.59, p<0.05), FFM explained 84% of the variation in absolute muscle strength of the upper limbs (β=0.84, p<0.01) and 68% of the lower limbs (β=0.68; p<0.01), while localized FM was inversely associated in the lower limbs (β=−0.53, p<0.05). Conclusion: Muscle strength of lower and upper limbs, when corrected by localized FFM, does not distinguish between overweight and normal weight adolescents, indicating that obesity does not have a negative effect on generation of muscle strength in obese boys. RESUMEN Introducción: La obesidad en adolescentes ha aumentado en todo el mundo, generalmente asociada a malos hábitos alimenticios y falta de actividad física. Objetivo: Comparar fuerza muscular absoluta y relativa de la masa corporal (MC), MLG y MLG localizada en miembros inferiores y superiores entre adolescentes obesos y no obesos. Métodos: Se verificó en 39 adolescentes hombres (entre 13 y 17 años) sus MC, estaturas e índices de masa corporal (IMC). La composición corporal fue mensurada por absorciometría de rayos-x de doble energía (DXA) y el test de repetición máxima para estimar la fuerza máxima de miembros superiores e inferiores, divididos en tres grupos: 11 eutróficos, 14 con sobrepeso y 14 obesos. Se usó ANOVA (one way) para comparación de variables, seguido de Post Hoc de Bonferroni para comparaciones múltiples, correlaciones por el coeficiente de correlación Pearson y Regresión Lineal Múltiple para la influencia de variables antropométricas, composición corporal y fuerza muscular de miembros inferiores y superiores. Resultados: Obesos y con sobrepeso presentaron valores de fuerza muscular absoluta similares a los eutróficos, pero menor si se corrigen por MC (p<0,001). Sin embargo, la fuerza muscular relativa a MLG y MLG localizada fue semejante. En regresión lineal, el IMC explicó el 59% de variación de fuerza muscular absoluta en miembros inferiores (β=0,59, p<0,05), MLG 84% de variación de fuerza muscular absoluta en miembros superiores (β=0,84, p<0,01) y 68% en miembros inferiores (β=0,68; p<0,01), mientras que la MG localizada fue inversamente asociada a los superiores (β=−0,53; p<0,05). ABSTRACT Background/objective: There is an increasing number of older patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection due to the success of antiretroviral therapy, the improved prognosis and life expectancy of patients, and the higher number of new infections among older individuals. The main objective of the present study was to compare the characteristics of older human immunodeficiency virus patients with those of younger patients. Materials and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study with human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients who were treated at the Specialized Care Service (Serviço de Assistência Especializada) for human immunodeficiency virus/AIDS in the city of Pelotas, South Brazil. Sociodemographic information as well as data on human immunodeficiency virus infection and treatment were collected. All participants underwent psychiatric and neurocognitive assessments, and their adherence to antiretroviral therapy was evaluated. Results: A total of 392 patients participated in the study, with 114 patients aged 50 years and older. The characteristics showing significant differences between older and younger human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients included race/ethnicity, comorbidities, duration and adherence to antiretroviral therapy, currently undetectable viral load, and cognitive impairment. Compared to younger patients, older patients were at higher risk of exhibiting cognitive impairment [OR 2.28 (95% CI: 1.35-3.82, p = 0.002)] and of having increased adherence to antiretroviral therapy [OR 3.11 (95% CI: 1.67-5.79, p < 0.001)]. Conclusions: The prevalence of neurocognitive impairment remained high in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients despite antiretroviral therapy. In the present study, the prevalence of this type of impairment was significantly higher in patients aged ≥50 years, most likely due to aging, human immunodeficiency virus infection, and a possible synergistic effect between these factors. Despite this higher prevalence, older patients exhibited higher rates of adherence to antiretroviral therapy and of undetectable human immunodeficiency virus viral load.

Amostras de sangue foram coletadas de cavalos Pantaneiros de cinco regiões dos estados de Mato Grosso do Sul e Mato Grosso. As raças Mangalarga Marchador, Árabe e Puro-Sangue Inglês (PSI) usando marcadores moleculares RAPD-PCR (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA - Polymerase Chain Reaction) foram incluídas no intuito de se calcular as distâncias genéticas e comparar a variabilidade genética entre e dentro de cada uma das raças. Dos 146 primers escrutinados, 13 foram escolhidos para amplificação com cada um dos indivíduos das oito populações, gerando um total de 44 bandas polimórficas. Os resultados encontrados na Análise de Variância Molecular (AMOVA) indicam que grande parte da variabilidade genética detectada se deve a diferenças entre indivíduos dentro de populações (75,47%). Na análise da estimativa dos percentuais de variabilidade genética entre pares de populações, foram observados maiores valores para os pares formados entre as cinco populações de cavalo Pantaneiro e a raça Árabe, enquanto os menores percentuais ocorreram entre Pantaneiro e Mangalarga Marchador. Maior índice de diversidade gênica foi observado na raça Pantaneiro (0,3396). No dendrograma gerado pelo método UPGMA, a partir da matriz de similaridade obtida pelo coeficiente de Jaccard, houve distinção entre as raças naturalizadas (Pantaneiro e Mangalarga Marchador) e as exóticas (Árabe e PSI). Os resultados encontrados sugerem que o Pantaneiro apresenta maior variabilidade genética que os de outras raças e está estreitamente relacionado ao Mangalarga Marchador.

Blood samples were collected from Pantaneiro Horses in five regions of Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso States. Arabian, Mangalarga Marchador and Thoroughbred were also included to estimate genetic distances and the existing variability among and within these breeds by RAPD-PCR (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA - Polymerase Chain Reaction) molecular markers. From 146 primers, 13 were chosen for amplification and 44 polymorphic bands were generated. The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated that the greatest portion of detected variability was due to differences between individuals within populations (75.47%). Analysis of the genetic variability between pairs of populations presented higher estimates for the five Pantaneiro populations with the Arabian breed, while lowest estimates were presented by pairs formed among the Pantaneiro populations with the Mangalarga Marchador. Highest genic diversity was shown by the Pantaneiro (0.3396), which also showed highest genetic distance with the Arabian and lowest with Mangalarga Marchador breed. UPGMA dendrogram showed distinct differences between naturalized (Pantaneiro and Mangalarga Marchador) and exotic (Arabian and Thoroughbred) breeds. In the dendrogram generated by UPGMA method, the similarity matrix generated by the Jaccard coefficient showed distinction between the naturalised breeds, Pantaneiro and Mangalarga Marchador, and the exotic breeds, Árab and English Thoroughbred. Results suggest that the Pantaneiro presents a higher genetic variability than the other studied breeds and has a close relationship with the Mangalarga Marchador.
