ABSTRACT The aimed of this study to assess the productivity and nutritional characteristics of hydroponic corn forage derived from bico de ouro creole seeds and AL-Bandeirante. Two treatments (T), each representing a corn seed variety, were randomly allocated to beds filled with a wood sawdust substrate: T1 (n=5) - bico de ouro creole seed variety, and T2 (n=5) - AL-Bandeirante hybrid seed variety. On the 13th day, forage was collected to assess seedling biometry, green and dry mass production, and bromatological analyses. The data were subjected to statistical analysis, with a 5% significance level. The creole seed variety yielded higher seedling height (17.53 cm), root length (10.19 cm), stem (5.37 cm), leaf (12.17 cm), and greater production of green mass (7.22 kg/m²) and dry matter (2.05kg/m²) (P<0.05). The AL-Bandeirante corn forage had higher dry matter content (39.18%), mineral matter (2.33%), non-fiber carbohydrate (31.88%), and estimated total digestible nutrients (68.14%) (P<0.05), while the creole corn forage had higher organic matter content (99.45%), ethereal extract (19.53%), neutral detergent fiber (45.56%), and cellulose (15.46%) (P<0.05). Crude protein, acid detergent fiber, and lignin were similar between the treatments (P>0.05). Despite the AL-Bandeirante variety yielding a higher concentration of certain nutrients, its forage productivity was significantly low. Therefore, under the conditions of this study, the use of the creole seed variety is recommended.

RESUMO O objetivo com este estudo foi avaliar a produtividade e as características nutricionais da forragem hidropônica de milho derivada de sementes de crioulo bico de ouro e AL-Bandeirante. Dois tratamentos (T), cada um representando uma variedade de semente de milho, foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em canteiros preenchidos com substrato de serragem de madeira: T1 (n=5) - variedade de semente crioula bico de ouro e T2 (n=5) - AL-Bandeirante variedade de semente híbrida. No 13º dia foi coletada forragem para avaliação da biometria das plântulas, produção de massa verde e seca e análises bromatológicas. Os dados foram submetidos à análise estatística, com nível de significância de 5%. A variedade de semente crioula proporcionou maior altura de plântula (17,53 cm), comprimento de raiz (10,19 cm), caule (5,37 cm), folha (12,17 cm) e maior produção de massa verde (7,22 kg/m²) e matéria seca (2,05kg /m²) (P<0,05). A forragem de milho AL-Bandeirante apresentou maior teor de matéria seca (39,18%), matéria mineral (2,33%), carboidrato não fibroso (31,88%) e nutrientes digestíveis totais estimados (68,14%) (P<0,05), enquanto a forragem de milho crioulo apresentou maior teor de matéria orgânica (99,45%), extrato etéreo (19,53%), fibra em detergente neutro (45,56%) e celulose (15,46%) (P<0,05). Proteína bruta, fibra em detergente ácido e lignina foram semelhantes entre os tratamentos (P>0,05). Apesar da variedade AL-Bandeirante apresentar maior concentração de alguns nutrientes, a produtividade de forragem foi significativamente baixa. Portanto, nas condições deste estudo, recomenda-se o uso da variedade crioula de sementes.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of cocoa meal in feed concentrate on the spermatogenesis in sheep. Twenty-five uncastrated males were divided into four groups and fed concentrated feed, supplemented with 0, 10, 20, and 30% cocoa meal, respectively, for 150 days. At the end of this period, the animals were slaughtered, the testicles were collected for histological slides, and testicular morphometric assessments were conducted, including cell type quantification in the seminiferous epithelium, intrinsic spermatogenesis yield, Sertoli-cell index, total number of Sertoli cells (TNSC), TNSC per testicular gram, daily sperm production (DSP), DSP per testicular gram, testicular sperm reserve (TSR), and TSR per testicular gram. Data were subjected to normality analysis using the Shapiro-Wilk test, followed by the tests for each condition, at a significance level of 5%. The administration of cocoa meal did not alter the germinal epithelial cell population, except for the number of type-A spermatogonia, which was lower in the control group than in the group that received 20% supplementation. A difference was found in the ratio between the number of type-A spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes in pre-leptotene/leptotene, and in the ratio between Sertoli cells and primary spermatocytes in pre-leptotene/leptotene, the control group and the group that received 10% cocoa meal significantly varied from each other, but not in relation to the other evaluated percentages. The TNSC, TNSC/g, DSP, and TSR levels were diminished in the group that consumed 30% cocoa meal. The TNSC, DSP, and TSR exhibited a negative quadratic tendency. Supplementation with 10% cocoa meal improved the TNSC, DSP, and TSR of sheep.

Resumen Diversas semillas de oleaginosas son fuente de ácidos grasos esenciales indispensables para cubrir las funciones básicas en el organismo. El estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar el efecto de la inclusión de semilla de linaza (Linum usitatissimum) en la dieta de conejos por medio del perfil metabólico. Se utilizaron 20 machos de la raza Nueva Zelandia de 8 meses de edad. Distribuidos en cuatro grupos, recibieron niveles de semilla de linaza (L. usitatissimum) en la dieta total: 0 %, 3 %, 6 % y 9 %, durante un período de 88 días. Los animales se sometieron a colecta de sangre cada 22 días para determinar glucosa, colesterol total, lipoproteínas de alta densidad (HDL), triglicéridos, lipoproteínas de muy baja densidad (VLDL), lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL), creatinina y urea. Los datos se evaluaron por análisis de varianza y de regresión con 5 % de significancia. La inclusión de semilla de linaza (L. usitatissimum) en la dieta presentó comportamiento cuadrático positivo para concentración plasmática de glucosa y colesterol total. No hubo diferencia significativa entre los tratamientos para la concentración plasmática de triglicéridos, lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL), lipoproteínas de muy baja densidad (VLDL) urea. Hubo comportamiento cúbico para lipoproteínas de alta densidad (HDL) y creatinina. La inclusión de linaza (L. usitatissimum) en la dieta no presentó efecto hipercolesterolémico en estos animales.

Abstract Many oilseeds are a source of essentials fatty acids that are necessary for the coverage of the basic functions in the organism. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) inclusion in the diet of rabbits through the metabolic profile. Twenty males of the New Zealand breed of 8 months were used. Divided in four groups, they received flaxseed (L. usitatissimum) levels in the total diet: 0 %, 3 %, 6 % y 9 %, for a period of 88 days. The animals were subjected to a blood collection every 22 days to determine glucose, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), creatinine and urea. The data were evaluated by analysis of variance and regression with 5 % significance. The inclusion of flaxseed (L. usitatissimum) in the rabbit diet showed a positive quadratic effect for plasmatic concentration of glucose and total cholesterol. There was no significant difference between treatments for plasma concentration of triglycerides, low- density lipoproteins (LDL), very low - density lipoproteins (VLDL) and urea. There was a cubic effect for cholesterol- and creatinine. The inclusion of flaxseed (L. usitatissimum) in the diet had hypercholesterolemic effect in these animals.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of immunocastration in lambs using testicular morphometry. Thirty lambs were randomly divided into two treatments (subcutaneous administration of 1.0 mL and 0.5 mL of an anti-GnRH vaccine) and a control group (1.0 mL saline solution). The animals were vaccinated at four months of age, received a second dose 30 days later, and were slaughtered 90 days after the first vaccine dose. After slaughter, testicles were collected, and samples were removed for histological processing and evaluation of testicular morphometric parameters. Analysis of variance, Tukey’s test, and Kruskal–Wallis test were performed, with a 5% level of significance. There was a reduction in testicular weight, gonadosomatic index, seminiferous tubule diameter, germinal epithelium height, leydigosomatic index, and total tubule length. The total length per testicular gram increased in the immunocastrated group. Intrinsic spermatogenesis yield, Sertoli cell indices, and estimates of sperm and Sertoli cell production were reduced in the immunized groups (P < 0.05). The anti-GnRH vaccine in lambs at doses of 1.0 mL and 0.5 mL is sufficient to promote immunocastration, verified through severe changes in testicular morphometry from animals.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the testicular biometric, seminal, and plasma testosterone levels in lambs subjected to an anti-GnRH vaccine as a method of castration. Thirty entire, crossbred Santa Inês male lambs were randomly distributed into three treatment (T): T1 was the control group, with the administration of 1 mL of saline solution subcutaneously (SC); 1.0 and 0.5 mL of an anti-GnRH vaccine were administered SC in T2 and T3, respectively. Testicular biometric variables, physical and morphological variables of semen, and plasma testosterone concentrations were evaluated. At D60, there was a reduction in testicular length, width, thickness, and scrotal circumference of the immunocastrated animals regardless of the vaccine dose used (P < 0.05). A reduction in semen physical variables at both dosages (P < 0.05) was observed, with azoospermia, in 80% and 70% of animals in the T2 and T3 groups, respectively. At D60, the immunocastrated animals also showed an increase in spermatozoa defects (P < 0.05), whereas plasma testosterone concentration decreased (P < 0.05). Immunocastration of lambs using the Bopriva vaccine at doses of 1.0 and 0.5 mL is efficient in inducing azoospermia in up to 80% of animals, although two doses in a 30-day interval are necessary for it to be an effective and safe method. Efficacy was demonstrated through a reduction in serum testosterone levels, testicular biometry, and seminal fluid analysis. Considering the efficacy of both doses in this study, we recommend using the lower dose (0.5 mL), which will allow for a 50% reduction in vaccine costs.

Resumen El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de la semilla de linaza (Linum usitatissimum) en la calidad física y morfológica del semen fresco y refrigerado de conejos. Se emplearon 20 machos Nueva Zelandia distribuidos en grupos según niveles de inclusión de semilla en su dieta durante 100 días: 0%, 3%, 6% y 9%. 15 días después de iniciar el suministro de la dieta se realizaron colectas seminales una vez por semana con vagina artificial y una hembra como maniquí. Para la evaluación física y morfológica se diluyó en medio Tris-yema y refrigerado a 5 °C; se valoró la motilidad espermática progresiva, el vigor espermático y la morfología espermática a las 0, 2, 12, 24, 48 y 72 horas post-refrigeración. La información fue analizada mediante análisis de varianza y de regresión al 5% de significancia. Para la morfología, volumen, color y aspecto seminal del semen fresco (p > 0,05) no hubo diferencia. Para volumen, turbidez, motilidad, vigor y concentración, hubo valores medios de 0,92 ± 0,24 mL; 0,86 ± 0,35; 76,58 ± 7,13%; 3,37 ± 0,28 y 205,75 ± 20,77 × 106 sptz, respectivamente. Hubo diferencia para motilidad y vigor espermático a las 0, 2, 12, 24, 48 y 72 horas post-refrigeración (p < 0,005). Se concluyó que la inclusión de hasta 9% de semilla de linaza en la dieta de conejos no alteró los parámetros físicos y microscópicos evaluados en este estudio en semen fresco y refrigerado de conejo.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) on the physical and morphological quality of fresh and refrigerated rabbit semen. Twenty New Zealand males were used, and distributed in four groups according to the level of inclusion of flaxseed in the total diet for 100 days: 0 %, 3 %, 6 %, and 9 %. Fifteen days after starting the supply of the diet, seminal collections were made once a week with an artificial vagina and a female as a dummy. For the physical and morphological evaluations, the semen was diluted in Tris-Egg Yolk medium and cooling at 5 °C; progressive sperm motility, and spermatic vigor and morphology were assessed at 0, 2, 12, 24, 48, and 72 post-cooling hours. This information was analyzed through analyses of variance and regression at 5 % significance. For the morphology, volume, color, and seminal appearance of fresh semen (p > 0.05), there was no difference. For volume, turbidity, motility, vigor, and concentration, average values of 0.92 ± 0.24 mL; 0.86 ± 0.35; 76.58 ± 7.13 %; 3.37 ± 0.28, and 205.75 ± 20.77 x 106 sptz were recorded, respectively. There were differences for motility and vigor at 0, 2, 12, 24, 48, and 72 post-cooling hours (p > 0.005). In conclusion, the inclusion of up to 9 % flaxseed in the rabbit diet did not alter the physical and microscopic parameters evaluated in this study in fresh and refrigerated rabbit semen.

RESUMO O objetivo com este estudo foi avaliar o efeito da substituição do farelo de soja pela torta de mamona destoxificada sobre a espermatogênese em ovinos. Foram utilizados 24 ovinos, com peso médio de 29±0,8kg e 9 meses de idade, distribuídos aleatoriamente em três tratamentos: T1= 0%, T2= 50% e T3= 100% de substituição do farelo de soja pela torta de mamona destoxificada. Os animais foram alimentados com pastagem de capim Aruana (Panicum maximum cv. Aruana) e ração durante 90 dias. Por ocasião do abate, coletou-se os testículos para mensurações e avaliação da espermatogênese. Os dados foram avaliados quanto à normalidade por meio do teste de Shapiro-Wilk e utilizou-se a Análise de Variância com 5% de significância. Não houve efeito da substituição do farelo de soja pela torta de mamona destoxificada nos níveis testados (P>0,05) para nenhuma das variáveis avaliadas. O rendimento médio da espermatogênese foi de 72,91 espermátides arredondadas produzidas a partir de uma espermatogônia; a média do número total de células germinativas sustentadas por uma de célula de Sertoli foi 12,09; a média da reserva espermática testicular total foi de 31,82x109 e de 238,28x106 por grama de testículo; a média da produção espermática diária foi de 3,03x109 e de 22,69x106 por grama de testículo e o número total de células de Sertoli foi de 4,15x109 e de 34,51x106 por grama de testículo. Os resultados demonstram que é possível substituir 100% do farelo de soja pela torta de mamona destoxificada na dieta de ovinos sem prejuízos no processo de espermatogênese.

ABSTRACT The objective was to evaluate the effect of replacing soybean meal with the detoxified castor bean cake on testicular morphometry and spermatogenesis of sheep. Were used 24 uncastrated, 9-month old sheep weighing 29±0.8 kg they were randomly distributed among three treatments: T1 = 0%, T2 = 50%, and T3 = 100% substitution of soybean meal with detoxified castor bean cake. The animals were fed with Aruana grass pastage (Panicum maximum ‘Aruana’) and a ration for 90 days. After slaughtering, the testicles were collected and histological slides were prepared with tissue fragments. The data were evaluated for normality using the Shapiro-Wilk test, and analysis of variance was carried out at 5% level of significance. Substitution of soybean meal with detoxified castor bean cake had no effect on any of the assessed variables at the tested levels (P >0.05). The mean yield of spermatogenesis was 72.91 rounded spermatids per spermatogonium; the mean of total number of germ cells held by a Sertoli cell was 12.09; the mean of the testicular spermatic reserve was 31.82×109 and that per testicular gram was 238.28×106; the mean of daily spermatic production was 3.03×109 and that per testicular gram was 22.69×106; and the total number of Sertoli cells was 4.15×109 and that per testicular gram was 34.51×106. The results show that it is possible to replace 100% of the soybean meal with detoxified castor bean cake in sheep diet without any effects on spermatogenesis; however, it is important to perform seminal evaluations in future studies.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of an hCG subdose applied at the Hou Hai acupoint as an ovulation inducer in donkeys. Eleven donkeys were distributed in randomized blocks in T1 = application of 1,500 IU of hCG intravenous (IV); T2 = 450 IU of hCG applied at the false acupoint (IV), and T3 = 450 IU of hCG applied at the Hou Hai acupoint. There was no difference (P > 0.05) between the treatments regarding the mean diameter of the pre-ovulatory follicle (34.5 ± 1.3 mm), the ovulation rate (96.97%), the interval between induction and ovulation (58.07 ± 16.82 h), the mean diameter of the CL (D0 = 23.0 ± 0.6; D2 = 27.7 ± 1.9 and D8 = 28.2 ± 0.8mm), and serum P4 concentrations (10.50 ± 2.99 ng.mL-1). The application of 450 IU of hCG at the Hou Hai acupoint increased ovulation rate (72.73%) more than 48 h after induction (P = 0.03) and a larger diameter of the CL on D4 (30.7 ± 5.1 mm) (P = 0.04). The vascularization area of the CL on D8, obtained by minimum number of colored pixel (NCP), was greater (P < 0.05) in the donkeys that received 1,500 IU of IV hCG (T1, 41.91 ± 1.17), and we found a positive correlation (P < 0.05) between mean NCP and P4 concentration in the donkeys that received 450 IU of hCG IV at the false acupoint (T2) or at the Hou Hai acupoint (T3). The application of 450 IU of hCG by IV route at the false acupoint or the Hou Hai acupoint was sufficient to induce ovulation in donkeys, demonstrating that the average dosage commonly used for this species is too high.

RESUMO O objetivo foi avaliar a produção in vitro de embriões bovinos a partir de doadoras zebuína e taurina. Os complexos cumulus oócitos (COC’s) foram obtidos de 167 doadoras Bos taurus e 161 Bos indicus, por meio de Ovum pick-up. Os COC’s foram classificados quanto à qualidade morfológica, maturados em incubadora por 22 a 24h em meio de maturação, e encaminhados à fertilização entre 18 e 22h. Os zigotos foram transferidos para meio de cultivo, onde permaneceram durante sete dias. Os embriões foram classificados em mórula (MO), blastocisto inicial (BI), blastocisto (BL) e blastocisto expandido (BX), envasados em palhetas contendo meio de cultivo, e inovulados em receptoras sincronizadas. Após 30 e 45 dias da inovulação, realizou-se o diagnóstico de gestação. Os animais Bos indicus apresentaram maior produção oocitária (n = 2556) em comparação aos Bos taurus (n = 1903) (P = 0,008). Os COCs das doadoras zebu apresentaram melhor qualidade morfológica do que das doadoras taurina (n = 689 vs. 444 para COCs grau I, P < 0,0001; n = 681 vs. 509 para COCs grau II, P = 0,010, para doadoras zebu e taurina, respectivamente). Quanto à produção de embriões, houve diferença nas porcentagens obtidas de MO (0,44% zebuínas e 6,42% taurinas, P = 0,017), BL (14,18% zebuínas e 3,74% taurinas, P < 0,0001) e BX (81,43% zebuínas e 75,13% taurinas, P < 0,0001). Não foi observado diferença para BI e taxa de prenhez (P > 0,05). Os animais Bos indicus apresentaram maior recuperação oocitária e maior número de oócitos viáveis em comparação às vacas Bos taurus, como também, maior produção de embriões viáveis.

ABSTRACT In this study, the in vitro production of bovine embryos from zebu and taurine donors was compared. Cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were obtained from 167 Bos taurus and 161 Bos indicus donors by ovum pick-up. COCs were classified based on their morphological quality, matured in incubators for 22 to 24 h in maturation medium, and then fertilized for 18 to 22 h. The zygotes were transferred to the culture medium for seven days. The embryos were classified as morula (OM), initial blastocyst (BI), blastocyst (BL), and expanded blastocyst (BX), before being transferred to synchronized recipient cows. Pregnancy was diagnosed 30-45 days post-transfer. The Bos indicus donors had a higher oocyte yield (n = 2556) than Bos taurus donors (n = 1903) (P = 0.008). The COCs from zebu donors had a better morphological quality than those from taurine donors (n = 689 vs. 444 for grade 1 COC, P < 0.0001; n = 681 vs. 509 for grade 2 COC, P = 0.010, for zebu and taurine donors, respectively). There were differences in embryo production percentages obtained from OM (0.44% from zebu and 6.42% from taurine, P = 0.017), BL (14.18% from zebu and 3.74% from taurine, P < 0.0001), and BX (81.43% from zebu and 75.13% from taurine, P < 0.0001). No significant difference was observed for embryo production from BI and pregnancy rate (P > 0.05). The Bos indicus cows showed greater oocyte recovery, number of viable oocytes, and production of viable embryos than the Bos taurus cows.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi o de avaliar o efeito de tamanho de granja (TG) e a ordem de parição (OP) sobre a ocorrência de ovos de endoparasitas em matrizes suínas comerciais alojadas na maternidade e gestação durante o período de maio a julho de 2014. Quarenta e três unidades produtoras de leitões foram classificadas por TG: pequena (100 a 250 porcas), média (251 a 510 porcas), grande (511 a 1.000 porcas) e muito grande (mais de 1.000 porcas). As porcas foram classificadas por OP: até dois, três a cinco e mais que cinco partos. As amostras fecais foram processadas usando a técnica de flotação em solução salina hipersaturada a 30-35%. Os resultados revelaram que a prevalência global de endoparasitas gastrointestinais obtidos neste estudo foi de 13,59%, em que 4,64% foram positivas para Ascaris suum, 0,56% para Trichuris suis e 8,27% para oocistos de coccídeos. A prevalência de endoparasitas obtidos para fazendas de pequeno e médio porte, e para fazendas grandes e muito grandes foi de 34,58% e 15,52%, respectivamente. Em conclusão, o estudo mostra que mais da metade das fazendas foram positivas para A. suum e oocistos de coccídeos, mas principalmente para as fêmeas mais jovens. Em geral, as porcas com até dois partos e pequenas propriedades mostraram uma porcentagem maior de endoparasitas.

Abstract The goal of this study was to assess the effect of farm size (FS) and farrowing order (FO) on the occurrence of endoparasites eggs in commercial sows housed in maternity and gestation areas during the period from May to July 2014. Forty-three piglet production units were classified by FS: small (100 to 250 sows), medium (251 to 510 sows), large (511 to 1,000 sows) and very large (more than 1,000 sows). Sows were classified by FO: up to two, three to five or more than five parturitions. Faecal samples were processed using the simple flotation technique in a hypersaturated salt solution (30-35% NaCl). The results revealed that the overall prevalence of gastrointestinal endoparasites obtained in this study was 12.47%, in that 4.64% were positive for Ascaris suum, 0.56% for Trichuris suis and 8.27% for coccidia oocysts. The prevalence of endoparasites obtained for small and medium size farm, and for large and very large farm was 34.58% and 15.52%, respectively. In conclusion, the study shows that more than half of the farms were positive for A. suum and coccidia oocysts, but mainly for younger females. In general, sows with up to two parturitions and small farms showed a higher endoparasites percentage.

RESUMO O objetivo com o estudo foi avaliar o efeito da inclusão de semente de linhaça na dieta de machos caprinos sobre a resistência do sêmen frente ao processo de criopreservação. Foram utilizados 16 machos, os quais foram distribuídos em quatro grupos e receberam dieta suplementada com 0, 4, 8 e 12% de semente de linhaça, durante um período de 60 dias. As coletas de sêmen iniciaram 25 dias após o início do fornecimento das dietas. Apenas os ejaculados que apresentaram motilidade e vigor acima de 70% e 3, respectivamente, foram encaminhados para o processo de criopreservação. Após o descongelamento, o sêmen foi avaliado através dos testes de termorresistência, hiposmótico e de integridade acrossomal. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e regressão a 5% de significância. Houve comportamento quadrático positivo para a motilidade progressiva aos 60, 120 e 180 minutos no teste de termoresistência (TTR), e comportamento quadrático positivo para o vigor espermático pós-descongelamento aos 120 e 180 minutos no TTR (P<0,05). Entretanto, obteve-se comportamento quadrático negativo para a integridade da membrana plasmática pelo Teste Hiposmótico (P<0,05) e houve diferença para o teste de integridade acrossomal, apresentando nível máximo ótimo de 3,25% de semente de linhaça para integridade acrossomal de 65,83% (P<0,05). Os resultados obtidos demonstram que a adição de 12% de semente de linhaça na dieta de reprodutores caprinos melhora a qualidade espermática pós-descongelamento.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the inclusion of flaxseed in the diet of male goats on the resistance of semen to the cryopreservation process. Sixteen males were distributed in four groups and fed a diet supplemented with 0, 4, 8, and 12% of flaxseed for a period of 60 days. Only the ejaculates that presented motility and vigor above 70% and 3, respectively, were sent through the cryopreservation process. After thawing, the semen was evaluated through thermo resistance, hypoosmotic, and acrossomal integrity tests. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and regression at 5% of significance. There was positive quadratic behavior for motility after 60, 120, and 180 min in the thermoresistance test (TTR), and positive quadratic behavior for sperm vigor after thawing after 120 and 180 min in the TTR (P < 0.05). However, negative quadratic behavior was obtained for plasma membrane integrity according to the hypoosmotic test (P < 0.05) and there was a difference in the acrosomal integrity test, presenting an optimum maximum level of 3.25% of flaxseed for acrosomal integrity of 65.83% (P < 0.05). The results obtained demonstrated that the addition of as much as 12% of flaxseed to the diet of goat breeders improved post-thawing sperm quality.

RESUMO O objetivo com este estudo foi verificar a acurácia da sexagem e da estimativa do número fetal em pequenos ruminantes por meio de exame ultrassonográfico. Foram avaliados 50 fetos de 36 ovelhas e 23 fetos de 11 cabras. No caso das ovelhas, 24, 10 e duas gestações foram simples, duplas e triplas, respectivamente. Enquanto nas cabras, três, cinco, duas e uma gestação foram simples, duplas, triplas e quádrupla, respectivamente. As avaliações foram realizadas aos 55 e 65 dias de gestação, por meio de exame ultrassonográfico transretal, utilizando-se um transdutor linear de dupla frequência (6,0 e 8,0 MHz). O sexo fetal foi diagnosticado pela localização do tubérculo genital ou visibilização da genitália externa. A acurácia da sexagem fetal foi avaliada por meio do teste Qui-quadrado (X2) considerando 5% de significância. O período gestacional interferiu (P<0,05) na acurácia da sexagem fetal. Obteve-se 30% e 82,61% de acurácia aos 55 dias de gestação, e 90% e 95,83% aos 65 dias, para cabras e ovelhas, respectivamente. O sexo fetal e o tipo de gestação não interferiram (P>0,05) na acurácia da sexagem em ambas as espécies nos períodos avaliados. Desta forma, a ultrassonografia em modo-B é um método eficiente para realização de diagnóstico precoce do sexo fetal e para determinação do número de fetos nos pequenos ruminantes no 65° dia da gestação, além disso, a acurácia da sexagem fetal não é influenciada pelo tipo de gestação, nem pelo sexo fetal.

SUMMARY The objective of this study was to verify the accuracy of sexing and fetal number estimation in small ruminants by ultrasonographic examination. Fifty fetuses from 36 sheep and 23 fetuses from 11 goats were evaluated. In the case of sheep, twenty-four, ten, and two pregnancy were single, double, and triple, respectively. Regarding the goats, three, five, two, and one simple pregnancy were single, double, triple, and quadruple, respectively. The evaluations were performed on days 55 and 65 of gestation, by means of transrectal ultrasonographic examination, using a dual-frequency linear transducer, (6.0 and 8.0 MHz). Fetal sex was diagnosed by the location of the genital tubercle or visualization of external genitalia. The accuracy of fetal sexing was evaluated using the Chi-square test (X2) considering a 5% significance level. The gestational period interfered in the accuracy of fetal sexing in both species (P <0.05). Obtained results showed 30% and 82.61% accuracy on day 55 of gestation, and 90% and 95.83% on day 65 for goats and sheep, respectively. The fetal sex and the type of pregnancy did not interfere in the sexing accuracy in both species during the evaluated periods (P> 0.05). Thus, B-mode ultrasonography is an efficient method to perform an early diagnosis of fetal sex and to determine the number of fetuses in the studied small ruminants on day 65 of gestation. In addition, the accuracy of fetal sexing is not influenced by the type of pregnancy or fetal sex.

ResumoEste estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de determinar as digestibilidades aparente e estandardizada de fosfatos para suínos em fase de crescimento, empregando duas metodologias. Foram usados 42 machos castrados, mestiços, com peso inicial de 37 ± 1,1kg em delineamento de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 2 x 7, com dois métodos de coleta: coleta total de fezes e uso de indicador (cinza insolúvel em ácido [AIA ]) × sete tratamentos, que consistiram de uma dieta controle (CTR); três dietas contendo fosfato na forma de pó (PP): PPA = CTR + fosfato pó A, PPB = CTR + fosfato pó B, e PPC = CTR + fosfato pó C; e mais três dietas contendo o fosfato microgranular (MP): MP15 = CTR + fosfato microgranular 15%, MP45 = CTR + fosfato microgranular 45% e MP75 = CTR + fosfato microgranular 75%). Os valores de 15, 45, e 75% correspondem à solubilidade em água dos fosfatos. Foram seis repetições, e o animal foi considerado como unidade experimental. Os coeficientes de digestibilidade estandardizada dos fosfatos avaliadas pelo método de coleta total, em valores percentuais, foram: PPA = 86,9, PPB = 84,9, PPC = 81,9, MP15 = 89,4, MP45 = 88,8, e MP75 = 92,6. Os coeficientes de digestibilidade total estandardizada dos fosfatos avaliados pelo método do indicador, em valores percentuais foram: PPA = 75,9, PPB = 75,4, PPC = 75,6, MP15 = 84,9, MP45 = 78,0, e MP75 = 79,4. Considerando as duas metodologias avaliadas no presente trabalho, os fosfatos microgranulares constituem a melhor alternativa para a alimentação de suínos em fase de crescimento.

AbstractThis study was realized with the objective to determine the apparent and standardized digestibilities of phosphates to pigs in growing phase, employing two methodologies. Forty-two crossbred barrows with an initial weight of 37 ± 1.1kg were used in a randomized-block design in a 2 × 7 factorial arrangement, with two collection methods: total fecal collection and the use of a indicator (acid insoluble ash [AIA]) × seven treatments, which consisted of a control diet (CTR); three diets containing phosphate in powder form (PP): PPA= CTR + powder phosphate A, PPB= CTR + powder phosphate B, and PPC= CTR + powder phosphate C; and another three diets containing the microgranular phosphate (MP): MP15= CTR + microgranular phosphate 15%, MP45 = CTR + microgranular phosphate 45% and MP75= CTR + microgranular phosphate 75%). The values of 15, 45, and 75% correspond to the water-solubility of the phosphates. There were six replicates, and the pig was considered as experimental unit. The standardized digestibility coefficients of the phosphates assessed by the total collection method, in percent values, were: PPA = 86.9, PPB = 84.9, PPC = 81.9, MP15 = 89.4, MP45 = 88.8, and MP75 = 92.6. The standardized-digestibility coefficients of the phosphates evaluated by the indicator method (AIA) in percent values were: PPA = 75.9, PPB = 75.4, PPC = 75.6, MP15 = 84.9, MP45 = 78.0, and MP75 = 79.4. Considering the two methodologies evaluated in the present work, the microgranular phosphates constitute the best alternative for feeding pigs in the growth phase.

BACKGROUND Schistosomiasis is a tropical disease. Patients who develop hepatosplenic schistosomiasis have clinical findings including periportal fibrosis, portal hypertension, cytopenia, splenomegaly and gastrointestinal hemorrhage. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to analyze the hemostatic and hematologic findings of patients with schistosomiasis and correlate these to the size of the spleen. METHODS Fifty-five adults with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis and 30 healthy subjects were selected through a history of contact with contaminated water, physical examination and ultrasound characteristics such as periportal fibrosis and splenomegaly in the Gastroenterology Service of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. Blood samples were collected to determine liver function, blood counts, prothrombin (international normalized ratio), partial thromboplastin time and fibrinogen and D-Dimer levels using the Pentra 120 hematological analyzer (HORIBA/ABX), Density Plus (test photo-optical Trinity Biotech, Ireland) and COBAS analyzer 6000 (Roche). Furthermore, the longitudinal size of the spleen was measured by ultrasound (Acuson X analyzer 150, Siemens). The Student t-test, the Fisher test and Pearson's correlation were used to analyze the results with statistical significance being set for a p-value < 0.05. RESULTS The mean age was higher for the Study Group than for the Control Group (54 ± 13.9 vs. 38 ± 12.7 years). The average longitudinal diameter of the spleen was 16.9 cm (Range: 12.3-26.3 cm). Anemia is a common finding in patients with schistosomiasis (36.3%). The mean platelet and leukocyte counts of patients were lower than for the Control Group (p-value < 0.001). Moreover, the international normalized ratio (1.42 vs. 1.04), partial thromboplastin time (37.9 vs. 30.5 seconds) and D-Dimer concentration (393 vs. 86.5 ng/mL) were higher for the Study Group compared to the Control Group. CONCLUSION This study suggests that hematological and hemostatic abnormalities are associated with splenomegaly, hypersplenism and portal hypertension.

The substitution of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) by follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in protocols for synchronization of ovulation in Santa Inês ewes was assessed. Ten females were submitted to the insertion of intravaginal sponges containing 60 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate for 10 days; after this period sponges were withdrawn and the animals were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 (n = 5): intramuscular injection of 0.5 mL d-cloprostenol and 300 UI eCG; Group 2 (n = 5): intramuscular injection of 0.5 mL d-cloprostenol and 20 mg FSH. Interval between sponge withdrawal and estrus beginning was 27.7 h and 35.9 h for eCG and FSH, respectively. Interval between sponge withdrawal and the end of estrus was 55.8 h for eCG treatment and 55.6 h for FSH treatment. Estrus length was 29.3 h and 19.6 h, for eCG and FSH treatments, respectively. The biggest follicle and the second in size measured 0.74 cm and 0.54 cm for eCG treatment, whereas for the FSH treatment they measured 0.73 and 0.50 cm. The interval between the beginning of estrus and ovulation was similar within all groups: 21.0 h for eCG treated ewes and 25.2 h for the ones treated with FSH. Ewes treated with eCG presented an interval of 47.5 h between sponge withdrawal and ovulation, while the ones treated with FSH presented a 61.1 h interval. Ovulation occurred 8.3 h before the end of estrus in the eCG group. On the other hand, ewes treated with FSH ovulated 5.5 h after the end of estrus. Estrus and ovulation were efficiently synchronized in Santa Inês ewes by using long-term progestogen protocol associated to the administration of 20 mg FSH, along with Prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) at the moment of sponge withdrawal, thus substituting the use of eCG.
