Abstract (dimOHmIm)+,I- and (dimOHmBim)+,I- were investigated as a corrosion inhibitors for MS in 0.5 M H2SO4 using gravimetric, PDP and EIS techniques. Polarization curves revealed that both compounds acted as mixed-type inhibitors, and that corrosion IE% increased with their higher concentrations. The adsorption of both inhibitors onto the MS surface obeyed Langmuir’s isotherm. The compound II showed a higher corrosion IE% than that of I. The quantum chemical calculations were applied to investigate the relationship between the two azolium salts derivatives electronic properties and their corrosion IE%.

Resumo Introdução: O confinamento generalizado devido à pandemia de COVID-19 foi instaurado pelas autoridades marroquinas no início de 2020 para preservar a saúde dos cidadãos. O confinamento e a pandemia determinaram efeitos psicológicos na população, incluindo ansiedade. A doença celíaca (CeD), uma doença crónica caracterizada por alterações inflamatórias intestinais, tem sido associada a distúrbios emocionais em adultos. Assim, os pacientes com CeD podem sofrer de ansiedade ou sofrer ainda mais desta condição, como consequência da situação concomitante. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a ansiedade relacionada ao COVID-19 numa amostra de adultos com CeD em comparação com um grupo saudável emparelhado. Método: Doentes com CeD (103) e um grupo saudável emparelhado (101) responderam através da internet a um questionário sobre ansiedade relacionada com o confinamento devido à COVID-19. A ansiedade foi avaliada com o State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (teste STAI: y1 para ansiedade-estado e y2 para ansiedade-traço). Resultados: A ansiedade-estado esteve presente em 65,3% dos CeD e 41,6% do grupo de comparação e a diferença foi estatisticamente significativa. As mulheres com CeD referem maiores níveis de ansiedade-estado do que seus pares no grupo de comparação (t= 3,23; p = 0,002) e foi encontrada correlação significativa entre boa adesão à DSG e menos ansiedade-estado (r = 0,31; p = 0,002). 61,8% dos participantes com CeD achavam que estavam em maior risco de contaminação por COVID-19, eram principalmente mulheres (χ2 = 7,66, p < 0,006) e apresentaram um score médio de ansiedade-estado significativamente maior do que seus pares que não expressaram esses pensamentos (t = 2,93; p = 0,004). Além disso, 41,5% dos participantes com CeD tinham ansiedade como traço contra 26,7% no grupo de comparação e a diferença entre os dois grupos foi estatisticamente significativa. Conclusão: Os resultados desta investigação permitem compreender melhor os efeitos pandémicos relacionados com a saúde em pacientes com doença celíaca. Demonstra que a COVID-19 e o confinamento relacionado tiveram um sério impacto no equilíbrio psicológico desses pacientes, piorando a sua ansiedade. Os resultados destacaram também a necessidade de melhorar o atendimento psicológico dos pacientes com CeD, principalmente considerando o uso da telemedicina durante a actual pandemia para suporte à sua saúde mental.

Abstract Introduction: The widespread lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic was insured by Moroccan authorities in early 2020 to preserve the health of citizens. The lockdown and the pandemic imposed psychological effects on the population including anxiety. Celiac disease (CeD), a chronic disease among the most common inflammatory intestinal disorders, has been linked to adult emotional disturbances. Hence, CeD patients may suffer from anxiety or increase this condition due to the concomitant situation. The objective of this study was to assess COVID-19-related anxiety in a sample of adults with CeD in comparison with a matched healthy group. Method: CeD patients (103) and matched healthy group (101) were investigated using a web-based COVID-19 and related lockdown anxiety survey. Anxiety was assessed with the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI test: Y1 for state anxiety and Y2 for trait anxiety). Results: State anxiety was present among 65.3% of CeD and 41.6% of the comparison group, and the difference was statistically significant. CeD women suffered more from state anxiety than their compeers in the comparison group (t = 3.23; p = 0.002), and a significant correlation between good compliance to GFD and less state anxiety was found among CeD patients (r = 0.31; p = 0.002). 61.8% of CeD participants thought they were at higher risk of contamination by COVID-19, and they were mostly women (χ2 = 7.66, p < 0.006) and had significantly higher state anxiety mean scores than their compatriots who did not express these thoughts (t = 2.93; p = 0.004). Additionally, 41.5% of CeD participants had anxiety as a trait against 26.7% in the comparison group and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant. Conclusion: Results of this survey allow a better understanding of the health-related pandemic effects on Moroccan CeD patients. It demonstrates that COVID-19 and related lockdowns had a serious impact on the psychological balance of these patients by increasing their anxiety. The survey results underlined the need to improve the psychological care of CeD patients notably by considering remote medical visits during this ongoing pandemic to provide mental health support.

Resumen En este artículo, tratamos la fórmula de Duhamel, la existencia, unicidad y estabilidad de soluciones mild de una clase de ecuaciones diferenciales no locales impulsivas con derivadas fraccionarias conformables. Los resultados principales se basan en teoría de semigrupos, combinada con algunos teoremas de punto fijo. También entregamos un ejemplo para ilustrar la aplicabilidad de nuestros resultados abstractos.

Abstract In this paper, we deal with the Duhamel formula, existence, uniqueness, and stability of mild solutions of a class of non-local impulsive differential equations with conformable fractional derivative. The main results are based on the semi-group theory combined with some fixed point theorems. We also give an example to illustrate the applicability of our abstract results.

Resumo O objetivo principal deste artigo é estudar analiticamente o comportamento de pilares esbeltos de concreto armado em estruturas deslocáveis e não deslocáveis. As variáveis estudadas foram a rigidez da viga conectada aos pilares esbeltos, a rigidez dos pilares de contraventamento e o número de vãos e andares no modelo de estrutura. A estabilidade de pilares esbeltos foi estudada e os limites exigidos para o contraventamento lateral foram determinados usando um programa de elementos finitos para realizar análise limite de flambagem, análise linear, e análise não linear geométrica para os diferentes modelos estruturais de pórticos. Todos os resultados obtidos neste estudo foram comparados com os métodos disponíveis incluídos nas diferentes normas de construção civil e os métodos sugeridos por outros pesquisadores. Os resultados indicaram que o valor mínimo do limite de contraventamento, necessário para restringir o pilar esbelto contra a deslocabilidade lateral, depende da rigidez das vigas de conexão, número de andares e número de vãos. O limite de contraventamento necessário diminui com o aumento da rigidez da viga e com o aumento do número de vãos. No entanto, o limite de contraventamento necessário aumenta com o aumento do número de andares na estrutura.

Abstract The main purpose of this paper is to study analytically the behavior of slender reinforced concrete columns existing in sway and non-sway structures. The studied variables were the stiffness of the beam connected to the slender columns, the stiffness of the bracing columns, and the number of bays and stories in the structure model. The stability of slender columns was studied and the required limits for the lateral bracing were determined using a finite element program to perform buckling analysis, linear analysis, and geometric nonlinear analysis for the different frame structural models. All the results obtained in this study were compared to the available methods included in the different building codes and the methods suggested by other researchers. The results indicated that the minimum value of the bracing limit, required to restrain the slender column against the side-sway, depends on the stiffness of the connecting beams, number of stories, and number of bays. The required bracing limit decreases with increasing the beam stiffness and with increasing the number of bays. However, the required bracing limit increases with the increase of the number of stories in the structure.

ABSTRACT Hydraulic conductivity in unsaturated soil controls water movement and measuring it in agricultural fields is a challenging task requiring time-consuming, costly, and skilled experimentation. This study was conducted to reduce the cost of experimentation through the development of an estimation model. The developed model is based on dimensional analysis to determine the value of hydraulic conductivity of unsaturated soil as it relates to soil moisture content, irrigation water electrical conductivity, and suction rate (pressure head). Data points were acquired from measurements of cumulative infiltration in the field, using a mini disc infiltrometer. The developed model gave a mean discrepancy ratio of 1.10 (the acceptable range is 0.5–2.0) and a mean percentage of relative errors of 9.96%. These values indicate that the dimensional analysis model is reliable for the prediction of sandy loam soil’s unsaturated hydraulic conductivity.

ABSTRACT Despite the high sustained virologic response (SVR) rates of direct-acting antiviral (DAAs) therapy, a small number of patients does not eradicate the virus, and these patients represent a challenge. This study aims to compare the outcomes of three second-line regimens for DAAs-experienced patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). This prospective observational study was conducted at the Damanhur Viral Hepatitis Center from January 2017 to February 2020. We included patients with CHC who did not achieve SVR after the complete course of Sofosbuvir/Daclatasvir±Ribavirin (SOF/DAC±RBV). The primary endpoint was SVR-12 after re-treatment. This study included 360 patients (with a mean age of 51.53±11.38 years). Approximately 51.1% of the patients were males, and 65.5% had liver cirrhosis. All patients of group 1 (45 patients) received SOF/VEL/VOX over 12-weeks; SVR-12 was achieved in 44 patients (97.8%). Group 2 (28 patients) received SOF/DAC/RBV over 24-weeks; (one patient was lost during follow-ups and one patient discontinued treatment due to hepatic decompensation). SVR-12 was achieved in 25 patients (96.2%). Group 3 (287 patients) received SOF/Ombitasvir/Paritaprevir/Ritonavir/RBV) over 12-weeks. Eight patients were lost during follow-ups, and one patient discontinued treatment due to grade 4 adverse events. SVR-12 was achieved in 276 patients (99.3%). There was no difference between the groups regarding their age, gender distribution, baseline viral load or comorbidities. Adverse events (thrombocytopenia, anemia, hyperbilirubinaemia and prolonged INR) were significantly higher in group 3, while group 1 did not experience any. The three studied retreatment regimens can be used for DAAs treatment-experienced patients considering availability. The SOF/VEL/VOX combination had the least adverse events.

RESUMO Muitos estudos têm pesquisado as ligações entre transtornos emocionais e dificuldades de aprendizagem. No entanto, muito pouco desta pesquisa se concentrou em estudantes disléxicos. Objetivo: Os objetivos deste estudo foram: 1) avaliar a autoestima, ansiedade e depressão em crianças e adolescentes disléxicos falantes do árabe; 2) descrever comorbidades psiquiátricas nesses estudantes, comparando-os com seus pares não disléxicos. Métodos: 205 estudantes (56 disléxicos e 149 bons leitores), alunos de escolas comuns da região de Beni Mellal-Khenifra do Marrocos, responderam à escala de autoavaliação de ansiedade de Taylor, ao questionário de depressão de Beck’s e ao inventário de autoestima de Coopersmith (IES). Resultados: Em geral, os disléxicos eram mais ansiosos, mais deprimidos e tiveram distúrbios de autoestima em comparação com seus pares não-disléxicos. O percentual de comorbidade psiquiátrica foi maior no grupo disléxico. Conclusões: Os resultados deste trabalho evidenciam a necessidade de uma abordagem multidisciplinar que integre a avaliação das necessidades emocionais aos cuidados de reabilitação de crianças e adolescentes disléxicos.

ABSTRACT Several research studies have been devoted to study the links between emotional disorders and learning disabilities. However, very minimal of this research has focused on dyslexic students. Objective: The objectives of this study were as follows: (1) to assess self-esteem, anxiety, and depression in dyslexic Arabic-speaking children and adolescents and (2) to describe psychiatric comorbidities in these subjects by comparing them to their non-dyslexic peers. Methods: In total, 205 students (56 dyslexics and 149 good readers), pursuing their education in ordinary schools in the Beni Mellal-Khenifra region of Morocco responded to Taylor’s Self-Assessment Scale of Anxiety, Beck’s Depression Questionnaire, and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI). Results: Overall, dyslexics were more anxious, more depressed, and had disturbed self-esteem compared to their non-dyslexic peers. The percentage of psychiatric comorbidity was higher in the dyslexic group. Conclusions: The results of this study highlight the need for a multidisciplinary approach that integrates emotional needs assessment into the rehabilitation care of dyslexic children and adolescents.

Resumen Antecedentes: Lotus arabicus L y Lotus glaber Mill. pertenecen a la familia de las fabáceas y crecen en estado silvestre en Egipto y tienen diferentes usos terapéuticos en la medicina popular. Objetivos: El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar el perfil fitoquímico y las propiedades antimicrobianas de los extractos metanólicos de dos especies de Lotus que crecen en Egipto, L. arabicus y L. glaber. Material y métodos: Se utilizó la cromatografía de gases-espectrometría de masas para identificar los compuestos de los extractos de las dos especies de Lotus. Se realizó un ensayo colorimétrico MTT y el método de difusión en disco para investigar las actividades antiviral y antimicrobiana de las dos especies de Lotus, respectivamente. Resultados: Los extractos de n-hexano y metanol de L. arabicus contenían altos porcentajes de hidrocarburos alcanos, como el 5-metiloctadecano, mientras que L. glaber contenía dodecano. Los principales compuestos del extracto de metanol de L. arabicus eran el éster metílico del ácido hexadecanoico y el éster dodecanoico, 2,3-bis(acetiloxi)propilo. Los principales compuestos del extracto de metanol de L. glaber fueron el ácido palmítico y la lucenina 2. El alcaloide indólico ditaína sólo se encontró en L. arabicus. Este alcaloide fue identificado por primera vez en el género Lotus. Las propiedades antimicrobianas de los extractos de las dos especies de Lotus mostraron que el extracto n-hexano de ambas especies de Lotus puede tener una potencial actividad antifúngica contra Candida parapsilosis y Aspergillus flavus. Además, los extractos metanólicos de ambas especies de Lotus tienen una potencial actividad antiviral contra el virus coxsackie B, pero sólo el extracto de L. arabicus mostró actividad contra el virus de la hepatitis A. Conclusión: L. arabicus puede tener una potencial actividad antifúngica o antiviral mayor que L. glaber.

Abstract Background: Lotus arabicus L and Lotus glaber Mill. belong to the family Fabaceae, and they grow in the wild in Egypt and have different therapeutic uses in folk medicine. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the phytochemical profile and antimicrobial properties of the methanolic extracts of two Lotus spp. growing in Egypt, L. arabicus and L. glaber. Material and methods: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to identify the compounds of the extracts of two Lotus species. An MTT colorimetric assay and the disc diffusion method were performed to investigate the antiviral and antimicrobial activities of two lotus species, respectively. Results: The n-hexane and methanol extracts of L. arabicus contained high percentages of alkane hydrocarbons, such as 5-methyloctadecane, while L. glaber contained dodecane. The major compounds in the methanol extract of L. arabicus were hexadecanoic acid methyl ester and dodecanoic acid,2,3-bis(acetyloxy)propyl ester. The major compounds in the methanol extract of L. glaber were palmitic acid and lucenin 2. The indole alkaloid ditaine was found only in L. arabicus. This alkaloid was identified for the first time in the genus Lotus. The antimicrobial properties of the extracts of the two Lotus species showed that the n-hexane extract of both Lotus species may have potential antifungal activity against Candida parapsilosis and Aspergillus flavus. Moreover, the methanolic extracts of both Lotus species have potential antiviral activity against the coxsackie B virus, but only the L. arabicus extract showed activity against the hepatitis A virus. Conclusion: Lotus arabicus might have potential antifungal or antiviral activity greater than L. glaber.

Abstract The present report describes the end-to-end technique of anal sphincter repair in a 36-year-old female patient with post-vaginal delivery fecal incontinence (FI). The patient had a history of two vaginal deliveries and the symptoms of FI were observed after the second delivery. On assessment of the severity of FI using the Wexner incontinence score, the patient had a score of 12. Endoanal ultrasonography revealed an anterior defect of the external anal sphincter extending from 11 to 3 o’clock. The patient had no previous anal surgery and did not have any medical comorbidities. The operation time was 45minutes. No intraoperative complications were recorded. At 12 months of follow-up, the patient showed significant improvement in the continence state, with her Wexner score dropping to 4. No postoperative complications were recorded. We can conclude that end-to-end anal sphincter repair is a technically feasible operation that confers satisfactory improvement in the continence state without imposing much tension on the site of sphincter repair.

Abstract Obesity results in detrimental effects on different body organs. Metformin (Met) has described to decrease the body weight of obese patient and to control the glucose level. This study aimed to evaluate the role of Met treatment for long period on the functionality of liver and kidney organs of obese rats. Forty rats were used in this study and divided into four groups as the following: group 1 (Gp1) was served as a negative control that administered orally with 200 µL of H2O. Gp2 of rats was administered with Met (200 mg/kg) daily for a month. Gp3 was obese rats, and Gp4 was obese rats administered with Met as in Gp2. All rats were sacrificed to analyze hematological, biochemical, and histopathological changes. The results showed that Met decreased the body weight of both naïve and obese rats, however, it caused hepato-renal dysfunctions in obese rats as evidenced by increased the levels of ALT, AST, urea, creatinine, and MDA and decrease in the antioxidants biomarkers (SOD, Cat and GSH). Collectively, Met causes liver and kidneys dysfunctions of obese rats and is not recommended to described for obese persons.

Abstract This paper presents major gaps and challenges for implementing the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) in the Mediterranean region. The authors make recommendations on the scientific knowledge needs and co-design actions identified during two consultations, part of the Decade preparatory-phase, framing them in the Mediterranean Sea’s unique environmental and socio-economic perspectives. According to the ‘Mediterranean State of the Environment and Development Report 2020’ by the United Nations Environment Programme Mediterranean Action Plan and despite notable progress, the Mediterranean region is not on track to achieve and fully implement the Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030. Key factors are the cumulative effect of multiple human-induced pressures that threaten the ecosystem resources and services in the global change scenario. The basin, identified as a climate change vulnerability hotspot, is exposed to pollution and rising impacts of climate change. This affects mainly the coastal zones, at increasing risk of extreme events and their negative effects of unsustainable management of key economic assets. Transitioning to a sustainable blue economy is the key for the marine environment’s health and the nourishment of future generations. This challenging context, offering the opportunity of enhancing the knowledge to define science-based measures as well as narrowing the gaps between the Northen and Southern shores, calls for a joint (re)action. The paper reviews the state of the art of Mediterranean Sea science knowledge, sets of trends, capacity development needs, specific challenges, and recommendations for each Decade’s societal outcome. In the conclusions, the proposal for a Mediterranean regional programme in the framework of the Ocean Decade is addressed. The core objective relies on integrating and improving the existing ocean-knowledge, Ocean Literacy, and ocean observing capacities building on international cooperation to reach the “Mediterranean Sea that we want”.

ABSTRACT Objective: Evaluate ferritin levels in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus and its relation to diabetic microvascular complications, and metabolic control. Subjects and methods: This study included 180 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) with a mean age of 14.9 ± 3.1 years and 180 apparently normal children matched for age and sex (control group). All children were evaluated with full history taking, thorough clinical examination, laboratory assessment of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and evaluation of the presence of microvascular complications. Serum ferritin levels were measured using electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. The patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of microvascular complications. Results: Serum ferritin levels were significantly higher in patients with T1DM in both groups compared with healthy controls (p < 0.001). Additionally, patients with microvascular complications had higher serum ferritin concentrations than those without microvascular complications (p < 0.001). Patients with microalbuminuria showed higher ferritin levels compared with patients without microalbuminuria (p < 0.05). Stepwise regression analysis revealed that levels of HbA1c and urinary albumin excretion were independently related to ferritin levels (p < 0.001 for both). On receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, a ferritin cutoff value of 163.6 ng/mL differentiated patients with microvascular complications from those without microvascular complications with a sensitivity of 92.1% and specificity of 93.4%. Conclusion: Serum ferritin levels are elevated in T1DM, particularly in patients with microvascular complications.

Abstract Objective: To determine pregnancy outcomes in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who were treated with hydroxychloroquine in a tertiary center. Methods: A retrospective study involving pregnant women with SLE who had antenatal follow-up and delivery in between 1 January 2007 and 1 January 2017. All participants were retrospectively enrolled and categorized into two groups based on hydroxychloroquine treatment during pregnancy. Results: There were 82 pregnancies included with 47 (57.3%) in the hydroxychloroquine group and 35 (42.7%) in the non-hydroxychloroquine group. Amongst hydroxychloroquine users, there were significantly more pregnancies with musculoskeletal involvement (p = 0.03), heavier mean neonatal birthweight (p = 0.02), and prolonged duration of pregnancy (p = 0.001). In non-hydroxychloroquine patients, there were significantly more recurrent miscarriages (p = 0.003), incidence of hypertension (p = 0.01) and gestational diabetes mellitus (p = 0.01) and concurrent medical illness (p = 0.005). Hydroxychloroquine use during pregnancy was protective against hypertension (p = 0.001), and the gestational age at delivery had significant effect on the neonatal birthweight (p = 0.001). However, duration of the disease had a significant negative effect on the neonatal birthweight (p = 0.016). Conclusion: Hydroxychloroquine enhanced better neonatal outcomes and reduced adverse pregnancy outcomes and antenatal complications such as hypertension and diabetes.

Abstract The formation equilibria of the dimethyltin(IV) complexes with of N,N,N’,N’-tetraethylethylenediamine (Et4en) in solution were investigated. The stoichiometry and stability constants of the complexes formed in solution phase were determined at different temperatures (15 oC - 35 oC) and in solutions of dioxane-water mixtures of different compositions (15% - 62.5%). The accepted model is composed of the 110, 111, 11-1 and 11-2 species. The thermodynamic parameters ΔH° and ΔS° associated with the protonation of N,N,N`,N`-tetraethylethylendiamine (Et4en) and its complex formation with the dimethyltin(IV) species were determined. The complex formation reaction is exothermic. The equilibrium constant for the displacement of N,N,N’,N’-tetraethylethylenediamine coordinated to dimethyltin(IV) by some selected DNA constituents was calculated. The Keq values clearly indicate the ability of DNA to displace the coordinated Et4en from its dimethyltin(IV) complex. The nucleotides IMP and GMP have the highest values. The DFT/B3LYP method was used for geometric optimization of the ligand and the complex using the Gaussian 09 program. Also the vibrational frequencies of the ligands and complexes were computed for the optimized geometries. The results shows that there is no imaginary frequencies as found in the calculated vibrational frequencies. The binding energies of the dimethyltin(IV) complexes were calculated. All calculated binding energy values are negative.

Resumen El equilibrio de formación de complejos de dimetilestaño(IV) con N,N,N’,N’-tetraetiletilenediamina (Et4en) fue investigado. La estequiometria y constantes de estabilidad de los complejos formados en solución se determinaron a diferentes temperaturas (15 oC - 35 oC) y en disoluciones de dioxano/agua con diferentes proporciones (15% - 62.5%). El modelo aceptado está constituido de las especies 110, 111, 11-1 y 11-2. Los parámetros termodinámicos ΔH° and ΔS° asociados con la protonación de la N,N,N’,N’-tetraetiletilenediamina (Et4en) y la formación de sus complejos con dimetilestaño(IV) fueron determinados. La reacciónde la formación de los complejos es exotérmica. Las constantes de equilibrio del desplazamiento de la N,N,N’,N’-tetraetiletilenediamina coordinada al dimetilestaño(IV) con diferentes fragmentos de la ADN fueron calculadas. Los valores Keq indican claramente la capacidad de la ADN de sustituir a la Et4en de su complejo de dimetilestaño(IV). Los nucleótidos IMP y GMP presentaron los valores más altos. El método DFT/B3LYP fue utilizado para la optimización geométrica del ligante y del complejo utilizando el programa Gaussian 09. Asimismo, se calcularon las frecuencias vibracionales para las geometrías optimizadas de los ligantes y complejos. Los resultados mostraron que todas las frecuencias vibracionales calculadas son reales. También se calcularon los valores de energías de enlace para los complejos de dimetilestaño(IV) resultando en valores negativos.

INTRODUCTION: Bacillus species are often considered as contaminants when cultured from clinical samples. Bacillus cereus may be a pathogen in certain circumstances and is known to cause musculoskeletal infections. This report aims to educate clinicians and clinical microbiology laboratories on B. cereus musculoskeletal infections and to heighten awareness that Bacillus species should not always be dismissed as contaminants. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a patient who presented to a tertiary hospital in Pretoria, South Africa, in November 2018 with B. cereus septic arthritis and underlying systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The isolate would otherwise have been dismissed as a contaminant had it not been for the crucial interaction between the laboratory and the treating clinicians. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of septic arthritis caused by B. cereus in an SLE patient where the organism was cultured from the joint specimen. Identification of the organism was performed using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation mass spectrometry. MANAGEMENT AND OUTCOME: Definitive treatment was with intravenous vancomycin, continued for four weeks, in addition to arthroscopy and management of the underlying SLE. The patient had a good clinical outcome and regained full mobility. CONCLUSION: Musculoskeletal infections, specifically septic arthritis caused by B. cereus, are exceedingly rare infections. Immune suppression, trauma, prosthetic implants and invasive procedures are important risk factors for B. cereus musculoskeletal infections. Close collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team approach will effect the best outcome for complicated patients with B. cereus infections.
