Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical, morphological, structural, and thermal properties of starch recovered from Solanum tuberosum residual of chips industry in Mexico using advanced instrumental techniques. The residual potato was collected from a chips production company and the starch obtained by aqueous extraction. The starch presented a content of carbohydrates of 87.79 %, proteins (1.18 %), lipids (0.15 %), ashes (0.26 %), and amylose (24.35 %). The water absorption capacity was 1.0163 g g-1, solubility (30.17 - 46.65 %), swelling (2.31 - 8.69 g g-1). Thermal analyzes showed a starch gelatinization about 61.7 - 90 ºC with a maximum weight loss at 288.1 °C. The scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) showed particles of 14 - 69 µm with a composition of 54.3 % carbon, 45.4 % oxygen, and 0.15 % potassium. The dynamic light scattering (DLS) showed particles of nanometric size (120 nm). The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) exhibited the crystallinity of the starch as type B (34.73 %) and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) showed the functional groups distinctive of the glucose.

ABSTRACT Castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) is an oleaginous plant of economic importance due to its different industrial applications. Edaphic characteristics are used to determine the viability of places considered as suitable to obtain castor oil. The objectives of this study were to determine the edaphic characteristics and oil content of R. communis, and to evaluate elicitation with salicylic acid (SA) in El Marqués, Querétaro, Mexico. Sampling was carried out in a direct way, selecting sites where castor bean plants were found. Samples of 1.5 kg of soil were taken and 3 clusters of castor bean in a mature state were collected from 21 accessions. The physicochemical characteristics of the soil and oil content of seeds were determined. Finally, 300 plants of the Guanajuatoil variety were planted and elicitated with different SA concentrations under greenhouse conditions in order to determine oil content. The physical analysis of the soil samples indicated dark-colored soils, Mollisol and Vertisol types, with different textures: clay, clay loam, sandy clay loam and sandy loam. Soil chemical analyses showed the following soil characteristics: pH 7.22; electrical conductivity 0.52 dS m-1; organic matter 7.17%; cation exchange capacity 26.77; calcium 38.62, magnesium 6.81, sodium 13.41and potassium 6.97 cmol kg-1; and nitrogen and phosphorus contents of 16.32 and 54 mg kg-1, respectively. Castor oil content was higher in clay soils (41.46%). The plants elicited with SA presented oil contents ranging from 28.99% to 52.9%, obtained with 100 and 900 ^M. In conclusion, elicitation with SA is an adequate method to increase oil content in castor bean seeds. The locality of El Marqués has good potential for the production of castor oil.

The goal of the present study was to determine the potential use of thermal analysis for the measurement of the light crude oil (LCO) content of standard biodiesel mixtures. Standard samples of biodiesel/LCO blends were prepared with different ratios of biodiesel; LCO: 1:0 (biodiesel only), 1:3, 1:1, 3:1, 0:1 (LCO only). Thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry were used to determine the usefulness of thermal analysis for quantification of the LCO in the mixtures. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy was also used to confirm the composition of the samples. It was found that thermogravimetric curves were not appropriate for the LCO measurements. However, the DSC signal of wax crystallization exhibited a good linear (R2 = 0.99) correlation with the LCO content in the blend. Furthermore, it was shown that aliphatic protons (-CH2-)n in biodiesel and light crude oil can also be used to determine LCO in biodiesel/LCO blends.

Abstract: Background: Multiple intestinal preparations have been used in children undergoing colonoscopy, with variable limitation due to acceptance, tolerance, and proper cleaning. The objective of this study was to compare the tolerability, safety and efficacy of the colonoscopy preparation with 1 day with PEG 3350 (poliethylenglycol) (4 g/kg/day) + bisacodyl compared to 2 days of preparation with PEG 3350 (2 g/kg/day) + bisacodyl in pediatric patients. Methods: A clinical, randomized, and blind trial was performed. Patients aged 2 to 18 years scheduled for colonoscopy were included. Patients were randomized into two groups: 1 day of preparation with PEG 3350 4 g/kg/day + bisacodyl and 2 days of preparation with PEG 3350 2 g/kg/day + bisacodyl. Through a questionnaire, physical examination and endoscopic evaluation (Boston scale), the tolerance, safety and efficacy of the 2 preparations to be evaluated were determined. Student’s t test was performed for quantitative variables and χ2 for qualitative variables. Results: There were no significant differences in compliance rates, adverse effects, and extent of colonoscopic evaluation. Conclusions: Tolerance and safety between the intestinal preparation for 1-day colonoscopy with PEG 3350 (4 g/kg/day) + bisacodyl and the 2-day preparation with PEG 3350 (2 g/kg/day) + bisacodyl were similar. The quality of cleanliness was good in both groups, being partially more effective in the 1-day group with PEG 3350 (4 g/kg/day).

Pinus pseudostrobus is a species with timber harvesting, distributed over a wide altitudinal gradient of 1,600-3,250 m, suggesting a genetic variance, which can be exploited by selecting trees that provide seeds in order to produce plants with high relative growth rates. Therefore, survival and early growth of Pinus pseudostrobus were evaluated under nursery conditions, based on the variation in offsprings of 38 outstanding trees (provenances) in natural stands from Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, Mexico. Seeds were sowing in February 2013 at a nursery located in Ixtlan de Juarez, near the collection site, to 2030 masl and a temperate climate. Survival from 54-166 days after planting (dap) was evaluated, five readings of plant height, basal stem diameter, four readings of number of brachyblasts were recorded, and the relative growth rate for plant height was estimated. Using analysis of variance and mean tests, significant differences among provenances were determined in all variables. In the evaluation, the plants in the nursery showed an exponential growth, an average of 0,8 to 1,5 mm in height/day of 54-166 dap and an average of 1-2 brachyblasts on primary and secondary branches per day in a range of 82-166 dap. From total provenances, four showed high growing rate.

The association of ankle fractures with a dislocation modifies their therapeutic management since the joint must not remain in such abnormal position for more than six hours and therefore, urgent surgical treatment is needed. The case of a 30-year-old woman treated at the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Hospital in Cienfuegos is presented. The patient presented with a severe fracture-dislocation of the right ankle with a supra-syndesmotic fibular fracture, a syndesmotic injury, a deltoid ligament injury and a tibial plafond fracture resulting from a bicycle fall. The fracture-dislocation was stabilized by using a RALCA® external mini-fixator. Full recovery was achieved five months after surgery. In our service, we may not have the devices most commonly used for fixation of ankle injuries at a given moment; therefore, external fixation becomes a viable option to correct this type of fractures. For this reason, we decided to present this case that demonstrates the effectiveness of the RALCA® external fixator.

In this work we studied the effect of the composition and thermal treatment in H2 of Pt-Rh/C materials with atomic ratios close to Pt:Rh 3:1, 1:1 and 1:3 and metal loading of 40 wt. %, for the COads and ethanol oxidation. Catalysts were prepared by chemical reduction with formic acid and physically characterized by energy dispersive X-rays spectroscopy (EDX), electron backscattering (EBS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), showing Pt:Rh ratios close to the nominals values, similar average particle sizes and an appropriated distributions of metal on carbon support at micro and nano scale. Cyclic voltammetry experiments showed a surface enriched in Pt due to the termodinamically unstable Pt-Rh system at the experimental temperature. The currents were normalized using the charge of oxidative desorption of CO allowing to observe differences among the current levels generated exclusively by the Rh electronic effects on the Pt. The thermal treatments of the Pt-Rh catalysts in a hydrogen atmosphere showed greater stability of the materials and notorious increases of the current levels for CO and ethanol electro-oxidation reactions. This suggests the necessity of better exploring the effects of thermal treatments in the electrocatalysis of the ethanol oxidation reaction.

Mar Chiquita lagoon is the largest endorheic body of water in Argentina. It is located in the northeast portion of the province of Cordoba. The maximum water level is the topic of this work, which is defined using the combined effect of the historical maximum water level measured on the coast and the maximum storm elevation (considering both wind and waves) estimated for recurrences of 25, 50 and 100 years. The analysis of the series of water levels made it possible to determine the historical maximum level measured in the lagoon. This value was recorded in 2003 as a height of 71.9 meters above sea level (masl). The maximum storm level is defined by both the action of the wind and waves generated by the storm. Specific software and empirical formulas were used to obtain these estimates. To propagate the waves on the beach profile, the bathymetry of the lagoon was rebuilt using remote sensing techniques. To this end, terrain elevation data were used from space surveys derived from radar and from thematic maps based on Landsat images with the digital extraction of water contours. The results indicate that the maximum flood that could occur in Laguna Mar Chiquita, on the southern coast of the system, is 73.5 masl with a recurrence of 100 years. It is important to conduct this analysis for systems with large fluctuations in water levels, such as the one presented here.

Objectives. To determine the gastroprotective and antisecretory effect of ethanol extract from matico leaves (Piper aduncum) in animal models. Materials and methods. To evaluate the gastroprotective effect, 220 mice of the Balb C57 strain were used. They were randomized in 22 groups of ten animals each, in which the formation of gastric ulcers was induced with indomethacin. Gastroprotection was determined by evaluating three aspects: inflammation, number of hemorrhagic shocks and number of ulcers. To evaluate the antisecretory effect, 64 white male Holtzman rats were used, which were randomized in eight groups of eight animals, one control and seven groups of treatment with one extract dose level and two phytochemical dose levels. Antisecretion was obtained through the pylorus ligation. Results. Regarding gastroprotection, dichloromethane, chloroform, hexane and methanol extracts decreased inflammation to over 66% (p<0,05). The ethanolic extract shows 100% activity in reducing the number of hemorrhagic bands (p<0,05). The chloroform extract shows antiulcer activity at 75% (p<0,05). In terms of antisecretion, the phytochemical in capsules containing the ethanolic extract achieved 72% reduction of the gastric secretion volume (p<0,01) and 104,3% (p<0,01) PH increase. Conclusions. In experimental conditions, ethanolic extracts, their fractions and phytochemicals have a gastroprotective effect in mice and antisecretory effect in rats.

Huitlacoche is a mushroom consumed traditionally in Mexico and is currently considered a food alternative. Proximate analysis, carbohydrates and phenolic compounds, as well as antioxidant activity were analyzed in huitlacoche samples. Considerable levels of protein [11.5-14.2 % dry basis (db)] and 54 to 65 % db of total dietary fiber (official enzymatic-gravimetric method) were found. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses detected high levels of the oligosaccharides raffinose, stachyose and verbascose (1505, 541 and 2611 mg/100 g db, respectively). HPLC also detected ferulic, 4-hydroxibenzoic, syringic and protocatechuic acids, mainly. Methanol extracts of huitlacoche showed high antioxidant activity (57-74 % anti-radical activity, 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl method). Considerable quantities of dietary fiber, oligosaccharides, phenolic acids and high antioxidant activity give huitlacoche a value as a functional food with nutraceutic potential.
