RESUMO A integração econômica tardia da região sul da América portuguesa ao restante da colônia, quando comparada a outras regiões como o Nordeste, fez com que o processo de transição do uso da mão de obra indígena para a africana e afrodescendente nessa região se consolidasse somente na segunda metade do século XVIII. Durante os anos iniciais de 1700, os indígenas ainda eram maioria no trabalho forçado, acompanhados de alguns poucos escravizados de origem africana. Conforme os anos avançavam, os indígenas e seus descendentes se distanciavam mais do status de escravos, papel que passou a ser então majoritariamente ocupado por africanos e afrodescendentes. O que se propõe nesse artigo é, por um lado, a análise dos distanciamentos e diferenças sociais existentes entre negros e indígenas e, por outro, as relações interdependentes mantidas entre os dois grupos. A análise será feita a partir de fontes judiciais referentes à Comarca de Paranaguá, pertencente à Capitania de São Paulo durante o século XVIII.

ABSTRACT The late economic integration of the southern region of Portuguese America to the rest of the colony, when compared to other regions such as the Northeast, meant that the process of transition from the use of indigenous to African and Afro-descendant labor in this region was consolidated only in the second half of the 18th century. During the early 1700s, indigenous people were still the majority in forced labor, accompanied by a few slaves of African origin. As the years progressed, the Indians and their descendants became more distant from the status of slaves, a role that then came to be mainly occupied by Africans and Afro-descendants. What is proposed in this article is, on the one hand, the analysis of the distances and social differences that exist between blacks and indigenous people and, on the other, the interdependent relations maintained between the two groups. The analysis will be made from judicial sources referring to the Comarca de Paranaguá, belonging to the Capitania de São Paulo, during the 18th century.

Este artigo analisa a configuração de uma comunidade escrava em Castro, São Paulo, durante as três primeiras décadas do século XIX. Busca compreender o que significou para esses cativos viver em uma vila voltada quase que exclusivamente para a criação e o comércio de animais. Para isso, foi utilizado como principal corpo documental inventários post-mortem de proprietários de escravos e, além deles, Listas Nominativas de Habitantes e outros documentos oriundos do poder judiciário. Através desta documentação, foi possível seguir a trajetória de alguns escravos e examinar aspectos da constituição de suas famílias e de seus vínculos com a vida agro-pastoril. Suas experiências semelhantes, fosse conduzindo tropas, cuidando do gado ou buscando uma vida melhor fora da vila de Castro, após receberem sua liberdade, fizeram com que configurassem uma comunidade escrava com ideais, interesses e visões de mundo particulares.

This article analyzes the configuration of a slave community in Castro, São Paulo, during the first three decades of the nineteenth century. It seeks to understand what it meant for these captives to live in a town directed almost exclusively towards raising and trading of animals. For that reason, slave owner's postmortem inventories were used as the main documentary body, and beyond them, Nominative Lists of Inhabitants and other documents from the judiciary. Through this documentation, it was possible to follow the trajectory of some slaves and examine aspects of the constitution of their families and their links with the agro-pastoral life. Their similar experiences, leading troops, taking care of livestock or seeking a better life outside the village of Castro, after receiving their freedom, it was made possible to shape a slave community with ideals, interests and particular world views.
