Abstract Five demosponges belonging to the order Axinellida: Axinella corrugata, Dragmacidon alvarezae, Dragmacidon reticulatum, Ptilocaulis walpersi, Myrmekioderma rea and one sponge belonging to the order Scopalinida: Scopalina ruetzleri were analyzed to assess their fatty acid composition in the phospholipid fraction. Additionally, the seasonal and intraspecific variation in fatty acids composition was assessed in M. rea and D. alvarezae. Fatty acid identification was conducted using an HRGC-MS with an ECL value of methyl ester derivatives, and analyzing their mass spectra. To confirm double bound location, N-acylpyrrolidide derivatives were used studying their mass spectra. In total, 83 fatty acids were identified with chain lengths ranging from C14 to C32. Interestingly, brominated fatty acids were identified, previously suggested for sponges. Polybranched fatty acids such as 4,8,12-trimethyltridecanoic acid (4,8,12-TMTD) and 3,7,11,15-tetramethylhexadecanoic (phytanic acid) were found, without a clear distribution pattern. A predominance of iso-acids (i-15:0 and i-17:0) on anteiso acids were observed. Some seasonal variations in fatty acid (FA) compositions for M. rea and D. alvarezae were observed. The hierarchical Clusters Analysis (HCA) showed that the FA composition was species-specific but not informative at the family or order level.

Resumen Introducción. La obesidad infantil requiere una atención con programas multidisciplinarios que integren todas sus dimensiones. Objetivo. Describir los cambios clínicos y metabólicos en pacientes con obesidad después de su participación en un programa de atención integral en obesidad infantil. Materiales y métodos. Se hizo un estudio observacional y analítico retrospectivo de una cohorte de pacientes de 6 a 17 años de edad atendidos en el programa de obesidad del Hospital Universitario de San Vicente Fundación (2012-2015), el cual incluyó la atención multidisciplinaria y una intervención educativa. Se evaluaron variables antropométricas y de laboratorio en el momento del ingreso al programa y en la última evaluación. Se exploraron las diferencias según el tiempo de seguimiento. Resultados. Se evaluaron 53 pacientes con una edad promedio de 11 ± 2 años, 52,8 % de los cuales eran hombres. El seguimiento de los pacientes fue de 18 ± 6 meses, aunque en el 30 % de ellos fue de 31 a 36 meses. Se encontró una disminución del índice de masa corporal (IMC; puntaje Z) entre el ingreso (2,75 ± 0,58) y el último control (2,32 ± 0,63) con un valor de p de 0,000 (IC95% 0,27-0,58). El 79,25 % de los pacientes redujo el puntaje Z del IMC. Esta disminución fue significativa independientemente del tiempo de seguimiento. La proporción de pacientes con un puntaje Z del IMC mayor de 3 pasó del 33,4 al 14,6 %. El número de criterios positivos para el síndrome metabólico disminuyó en el seguimiento. Los niveles de triglicéridos y de hemoglobina A1c (HbA1c) mejoraron significativamente. Conclusiones. El manejo de la obesidad infantil con una intervención multidisciplinaria asociada a apoyo educativo grupal continuo puede influir significativamente en los cambios clínicos y metabólicos. Es necesario prolongar el tiempo de seguimiento para prevenir las recaídas.

Abstract Introduction: The approach to childhood obesity requires multidisciplinary programs including all the dimensions susceptible to management. Objective: To describe the clinical and metabolic changes in patients with obesity after a comprehensive care program for childhood obesity. Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective observational and analytical study in a cohort of patients between 6 and 17 years old treated in the obesity program at the Hospital Universitario San Vicente Fundación (2012-2015). We carried out multidisciplinary care and educational intervention. Anthropometric and laboratory variables were evaluated both at admission to the program and in the last evaluation and statistical differences were sought according to the follow-up time. Results: We evaluated 53 patients, of whom 52.8% were men, with an average age of 11 ± 2 years. The follow-up extended for 18 ± 6 months though 30% of the patients were followed for 31 to 36 months. There was a decrease in the BMI (Z score) between admission (2.75 ± 0.58 and the last control (2.32 ± 0.63) with a p-value of 0.000 (95% CI: 0.27 -0.58); 79.25% of the patients reduced the BMI Z score. This decrease was significant regardless of the follow-up time. The proportion of patients with a BMI Z score >3 decreased from 33.4% to 14.6%. The number of positive criteria for metabolic syndrome decreased in the follow-up. Triglycerides and HbA1c were the metabolic variables that improved significantly. Conclusions: The management of childhood obesity with an interdisciplinary intervention associated with continuous group educational support can significantly impact on clinical and metabolic changes. It is necessary to continue monitoring over time to prevent relapse.

Abstract: Krukenberg’s tumor is a metastasis to ovary from a neoplastic whose origin is from gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma. Dr. Friederich Krukenberg, first described in 1986 a morphology that was characterized by mucus-secreting cells shaped seal ring. Herein we inform a case of hematological malignancy (Non-Hodgkin lymphoma diffuse large B-cell immunophenotype CD20+) that presented a clinical behaviour and pattern of spread similar to Krukenberg’s tumor and after chemotherapy treatment, the patient has seven years on first remission. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma with Krukenberg features.

Resumen: El tumor de Krukenberg se refiere a la metástasis a ovario de una neoplasia de origen en tubo digestivo del tipo adenocarcinoma. La descripción original correspondió al Dr. Friederich Krukenberg, quien en 1896 detalló una morfología característica clásica de células mucosecretoras en forma de anillo de sello. En este trabajo se informa un caso de una neoplasia hematológica (linfoma no Hodgkin difuso de células grandes inmunofenotipo B) cuyo comportamiento clínico y patrón de diseminación fue similar al tumor de Krukenberg y que después del tratamiento con quimioterapia la paciente tiene siete años en primera remisión. Posterior a la revisión de la literatura, el presente caso es el primero que se informa con estas características.

Resumen En general, los factores genéticos influencian la respuesta inflamatoria e inmune, haciendo que los individuos puedan responder de manera diferente a un mismo cambio en el ambiente. Así, el perfil genético de cada individuo modula o influencia esa respuesta. La interleukina 1ß (IL-1 ß) es un potente activador de la actividad osteoclástica y una variación genética de la proteína, conocida como polimorfismo, puede aumentar su efecto, lo que afectaría negativamente el pronóstico en los tratamientos odontológicos. El estudio de los polimorfismos genéticos de las interleuquinas se ha convertido en tema de gran interés y debate académico en diferentes ramas de la salud, debido a la importancia que parecen tener como moduladores de los procesos de reabsorción ósea. Porque los polimorfismos genéticos pueden ayudar a explicar las diferentes respuestas al tratamiento endodóntico en diferentes pacientes. El propósito de esta revisión es actualizar la información previamente publicada relacionada con los polimorfismos genéticos.

Abstract Genetic factors influence inflammatory and immune responses in general, and individuals may respond differently to common environmental challenges. Therefore the genetic profile for every individual module or influence that response. Interleukin 1ß (IL-1 ß) is a potent activator of osteoclastic activity and genetic variation of the protein, known as polymorphism, may increase its effect, which would negatively affect the prognosis of dental treatment. The study of genetic polymorphisms of interleukins has become a topic of great interest and academic debate in different areas of health, given the importance they seem to have as modulators of bone resorption processes. Because of the genetic polymorphisms might help explain the different responses to endodontic treatment in different patients, the purpose of this literature review is to update previously published information regarding genetic polymorphism.

La investigación se desarrolló con el fin de implementar una metodología que permitiera la realización de ensayos de interacciones alelopáticas entre corales y esponjas, minimizando la interacción física provocada por el uso de dispositivos que producen roce y efecto abrasivo sobre los pólipos del coral. Se llevó a cabo un estudio de preformulación utilizando polímeros con características mucoadhesivas sobre mucus que recubre los pólipos de coral, con el fin de obtener un gel, incorporando en las formulaciones un extracto de la esponja Cliona delitrix. Se caracterizaron propiedades como extensibilidad y adherencia, así como la capacidad bioadhesiva de las formulaciones propuestas, considerando su comportamiento reológico. Estas mostraron una buena estabilidad física frente a las condiciones del medio marino tanto in vitro como in situ. De igual manera, se diseñó un dispositivo que facilitó la aplicación del gel sobre la superficie de los corales por parte de los buzos en el arrecife coralino. Finalmente se estudió el comportamiento de liberación al medio acuoso simulado del gel con el extracto de la esponja objeto de estudio

This study was carried out with the purpose of implementing a methodology to assess allelopathic interactions assays between corals and reef sponges reducing the physical interaction caused by the use of devices that involve abrasion and harm over the coral polyps. Was carried out a preformulation study using polymers with mucoadhesive on the mucus that cover the coral polyps, with the purpose of develop a gel, incorporating an extract from Cliona Delitrix into the formulations. Obtained formulations were characterized by properties such as extensibility, adherence and mucoadhesive capacity. These formulations showed great physical stability under prevalent marine conditions both in vitro and in situ. In the same way was designed a device that let the smearing of the gel over the coral surfaces carried out for the divers in the coral reefs. Finally, was studied the releasing behavior of the gel with the sponge´s extract into the sea water conditions

The bioassay guided purification of the octocoral Eunicea laciniata organic extract, collected at Santa Marta bay, Colombia, allowed the isolation of the new compound (-)-3β-pregna-5,20-dienyl-β-D-arabinopyranoside (1), along with the known compounds 1(S*),11(R*)-dolabell-3(E),7(E),12(18)-triene (2), 13-keto-1(S),11(R)-dolabell-3(E ),7(E),12(18)-triene (3), cholest- 5,22-dien-3β-ol (4), cholesterol (5), y brassicasterol (6). The structure and absolute configuration of 1 was determined on based spectroscopic analyses (NMR and CD). The extract showed antifouling activity against five strains of marine bacteria associated to heavy fouled surfaces. Also showed activity against the cypris of the cosmopolitan barnacle Balanus amphitrite, and low toxicity in Artemia salina test.
