RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da conversão da vegetação nativa secundária (VN) em sistemas convencionais (agricultura e pastagem) no carbono orgânico total (COS) e carbono das frações da matéria orgânica particulada (MOP) e, matéria orgânica associada aos minerais (MOAM) no semiárido brasileiro. O estudo foi realizado nos municípios de Delmiro Gouveia, Inhapi e Pariconha, em Alagoas. Os solos foram coletados nas camadas de 0-0.1, 0.1-0.2 e 0.2-0.3 m. Os tratamentos analisados foram: cultivos agrícolas com 4, 15 e 30 anos e, pastagem com 10 anos. Como referência utilizou-se a Caatinga secundária. Os resultados mostram que em solos com textura mais arenosa (Neossolos Quartzarênico e Regolítico – Arenosols e Regosols, respectivamente) há reduções nos níveis de COS e carbono no compartimento associada aos minerais. O inverso pode ser observado no Argissolo (Acrisols), de textura argilosa com 30 anos de cultivo, o qual ocorreu um aumento no COS e C nas frações quantitativas da matéria orgânica do solo. Além disso, apesar da textura arenosa do Neossolo Regolítico, os níveis de MOP foram aumentados no sistema de pasto em relação à vegetação nativa, todavia não o suficiente para recuperar o conteúdo original de COS desse sistema.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the conversion of secondary native vegetation (NV) to conventional systems (agriculture and pasture) in soil organic carbon (SOC) and carbon of fractions particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The study was carried out in the municipalities of Delmiro Gouveia, Inhapi and Pariconha, in Alagoas, Brazil. Soils were collected in the layers of 0-0.1, 0.1-0.2 and 0.2-0.3 m. The treatments analyzed were: agricultural crops with 4, 15 and 30 years and pasture with 10 years. As a reference, the secondary Caatinga was used. The results show that in soils with sandy texture (Neossolos Quartzarênico and Regolítico – Arenosols and Regosols, respectively), there were reductions in SOC levels and carbon in the compartment associated with minerals. The inverse can be observed in the clay-textured Argissolo (Acrisols), with 30 years of cultivation, in which there was an increase in SOC and C in the quantitative fractions of soil organic matter. In addition, despite the sandy texture of the Neossolo Regolítico, POM levels were increased in the pasture system in comparison to native vegetation, but it was not enough to recover the original SOC content of this system.

ABSTRACT: Studies show that soil organic carbon (SOC) decreases between 3 % and 9 % in degraded grasslands in tropical regions, mainly due to the absence of techniques to enhance carbon contribution to soils. This study assessed SOC stock change factors for grassland management, specific to the semi-arid region of Brazil. These factors may contribute to a better understanding of SOC dynamics and could be used to improve inventories on GHG emissions. In addition, they could be used for updating default factors used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This study considers both soil sampling and a literature review, and comprises 27 paired comparisons, where the dataset was analyzed using a mixed linear model. For the grassland in the Brazilian semi-arid region, the SOC stock is reduced by between 12 % and 27 % due to inadequate management, overgrazing, and edaphoclimatic conditions of the Brazilian semiarid. However, this depends on aspects, such as land use and soil layer, which represents substantially more severe losses than in other regions of the country. We also found that losses occur during the first five years after conversion of native vegetation. The results also indicated a trend for SOC stocks to recover over time, reaching 4 % after 30 years of use as grassland, probably related to the long period without soil tillage and the role of gramineas root system.

RESUMO O reflorestamento é considerado um método eficaz para melhorar a qualidade do solo e drenar o CO2 atmosférico por meio do sequestro de carbono, tanto na vegetação quanto no solo. Nesse sentido, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da conversão do cultivo de cana-de-açúcar em plantações de eucalipto (Eucalyptus spp.) sobre a qualidade do solo e sequestro de carbono em um Latossolo na região da Mata Atlântica do estado de Alagoas, Brasil, por meio de análise multivariada. Os sistemas avaliados consistiram em quatro áreas, sendo uma cultivada com cana-de-açúcar, por aproximadamente 20 anos, tomada como área de referência do estudo; e três áreas adjacentes, cultivadas com floresta de eucalipto por 1 (E1), 3 (E3) e 6 (E6) anos, anteriormente eram cultivadas com cana-de-açúcar. Foram avaliadas as propriedades físicas (densidade do solo - DS, diâmetro médio ponderado - DMP, diâmetro médio geométrico - DMG e índice de estabilidade de agregados - IEA), químicas (carbono orgânico do solo - COS, nitrogênio total - NT, carbono lábil - CL e carbono recalcitrante - CR) e biológicas (carbono da biomassa microbiana - CBM, carbono respirado do solo - C-CO2 e quociente metabólico - qCO2) do solo. Os dados foram padronizados e submetidos à Análise de Componentes Principais. Os resultados mostram que COS, CL, NT, DMG, DMP e IEA aumentaram, enquanto DS apresentou redução nos sistemas E3 e E6. A conversão do cultivo de cana-de-açúcar com queima da palhada e colheita manual para plantações de eucaliptos foi eficiente em promover o sequestro de COS e melhorar as propriedades físicas, químicas e biológicas do solo.

ABSTRACT Reforestation is considered an effective method to improve soil quality and drain atmospheric CO2 by sequestering carbon, in both soil and vegetation. In this regard, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of converting areas cultivated with sugarcane to eucalypt plantations (Eucalyptus spp.) on soil quality and carbon sequestration in a Latossolo (Ferralsol) in the Atlantic Forest region of the Alagoas state, Brazil, through multivariate analysis. The systems under evaluation consisted of four areas: one area cultivated with sugarcane for approximately 20 years, taken as the reference area of this study, and the other three adjacent areas cultivated with eucalypt at 1 (E1), 3 (E3) and 6 (E6) years of age, previously cultivated with sugarcane. Physical (bulk density - BD, Mean weight-diameter - MWD, geometric mean diameter - GMD and aggregate stability index - ASI), chemical (soil organic carbon - SOC, total nitrogen - TN, labile carbon - LC and recalcitrant carbon - RC) and biological (Microbial biomass carbon - MBC, soil carbon respiration - C-CO2 and metabolic quotient - qCO2) properties of soil were evaluated. Data were collected, standardized and submitted to exploratory analysis with principal components. The results show that SOC, LC, TN, GMD, MWD and ASI increased, while BD showed a reduction in E3 and E6 systems. The conversion of sugarcane cultivation with burning of straw and manual harvest into eucalypt plantations was efficient at promoting SOC sequestration and improving physical, chemical and biological properties of soil.

RESUMO Estresses abióticos reduzem o rendimento e a qualidade da produção de algodão e isso pode ser atenuado pelo uso de eliciadores exógenos. Este estudo investigou ajustes fisiológicos, melhoria da produtividade, rendimento e qualidade da fibra do algodão naturalmente colorido cultivar BRS Topázio sob pulverização de silício foliar. Foram testadas cinco doses de silício (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 mg L-1), em delineamento inteiramente casualizado; e avaliadas variáveis fisiológicas, produção, rendimento e qualidade de fibra. Os dados foram submetidos às análises de componentes principais, variância multivariada e univariada e regressão linear múltipla. O silício promove ajustes fisiológicos, aumento de produção, rendimento e qualidade de fibra de algodão. A dose ideal de silício varia em função da variável resposta avaliada. A qualidade da fibra de plantas tratadas com silício está dentro dos valores esperados para a cultivar e em conformidade com a norma internacional D-4605 da American Society for Testing and Materials. Portanto, o plantio da cultivar BRS Topázio com aplicações foliares de silício pode ser recomendado para melhoria da cadeia produtiva de algodão de fibra naturalmente colorida no semiárido do Brasil.

ABSTRACT Abiotic stresses reduce the yield and quality of cotton production, however, this problem may be mitigated by exogenous elicitors. This study investigated physiological adjustments, improvement in productivity, and fiber yield and quality from naturally colored cotton BRS Topázio cultivar under leaf silicon spraying. Five doses of silicon (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mg L-1) were tested in a completely randomized design. The variables assessed were physiological, production, fiber yield and quality. Data were submitted to principal component analysis, multivariate and univariate variance, and multiple linear regression. Silicon promotes physiological adjustments, increased production, cotton fiber yield and quality. Optimum silicon dose varies depending on the variable response. Fiber quality from plants treated with silicon is within the expected pattern for this cultivar and the international standard D-4605 of the American Society for Testing and Materials. Therefore, planting BRS Topázio cultivar under silicon foliar applications may be recommended to improve the naturally colored fiber cotton production chain in the Brazilian semiarid region.

RESUMO A conversão de áreas cultivadas com cana-de-açúcar para florestas de eucalipto pode promover melhorias nas propriedades físicas, químicas e biológicas do solo. Neste contexto, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar as mudanças nos estoques e teores de carbono e nitrogênio e na estabilidade de agregados do solo em área de transição de cana-de-açúcar para eucalipto em Alagoas. O estudo foi realizado em uma propriedade rural, localizada no município de Atalaia - AL. Os sistemas avaliados consistiram de quatro áreas, sendo uma cultivada com cana-de-açúcar, por aproximadamente 20 anos, tomada como a área de referência do estudo; e três áreas adjacentes, cultivadas com floresta de eucalipto a 1, 3 e 6 anos. Foram determinadas a densidade do solo, os teores e estoques de carbono e nitrogênio e os índices de agregação do solo. A conversão do cultivo de cana-de-açúcar com preparo convencional e queima da palhada para plantações de eucalipto promoveu o aumento dos teores e estoques de carbono e nitrogênio do solo. Também reduziu a densidade do solo e aumentou a estabilidade de agregados em água. Os resultados indicam que a conversão de cana-de-açúcar em eucalipto na região da Mata Atlântica de Alagoas, pode ser uma alternativa para promover o sequestro de carbono e melhorar a qualidade do solo.

ABSTRACT The conversion of areas cultivated with sugarcane into eucalyptus forests can promote improvements in the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil. Within this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in the stocks and levels of carbon and nitrogen and soil-aggregate stability in an area of transition from sugarcane to eucalyptus in the State of Alagoas, Brazil. The study was carried out on a rural property, located in the district of Atalaia. The systems under evaluation consisted of four areas, one cultivated with sugarcane for approximately 20 years, taken as the reference area for the study, and three adjacent areas cultivated with eucalyptus forest, at 1, 3 and 6 years of age. Bulk density, the levels and stocks of carbon and nitrogen, and the soil aggregation index were all determined. The conversion of a sugarcane plantation under conventional tillage with straw burning into eucalyptus plantations promoted an increase in the levels and stocks of carbon and nitrogen in the soil; it also reduced bulk density and increased the water stability of aggregates. The results show that the conversion of sugarcane into eucalyptus in the Atlantic Forest region of Alagoas may be an alternative for promoting carbon sequestration and improving soil quality.
