Abstract The ocean is a unique system connecting ecological, economic, social, and cultural components, through which goods and services regulate the planetary condition and support the development of mankind. However, its increasing use has followed the exponential growth of the global economic system, outpacing humanity’s ability to develop the knowledge necessary to establish a basis for its proper use. Hence, there is an added perception that our necessary knowledge about the functioning of the ocean for its appropriate planning and management, advances at a slow pace, with which the ocean would be losing quality and sustainability. Systemic views of the ocean tend to highlight dominant components and processes instead of structural details, establishing a quality shortcut to the knowledge where society can understand current and future ocean conditions. To achieve the desired ocean health and sustainability, we propose the formation of a base of knowledge of the marine and coastal environments, capable of supporting best practices and policies for planning and management. We drew from the interdisciplinary research developed by the Brazilian research group “Ecosystem-Based Marine and Coastal Management (Eco-MCM), ” which has been developing projects based on three fundamental steps: (1) systemic analysis of the marine and coastal environments, highlighting their ecosystems, ecosystem services, social and economic benefits produced by the services and the stakeholders benefited; (2) modeling of the studied systems, and (3) propositional phase to incorporate models to support the practices and policies for their planning, management, and governance. As such, they are aligned with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) challenges and outcomes.

ABSTRACT Objective To describe the sociodemographic and clinical characterization of patients with chronic hepatitis C followed at the outpatient clinic of a reference hospital in infectology. Method A cross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative study with chronic hepatitis C patients attended at a referral hospital during November 2015 to April 2016 with a sample of 47 users. Results The participants were male (76.6%), 57 years old (57.5%), brown (38.3%), married (55.3%), (61.7%), with a discovery time of up to 6 years (68.1%), not knowing the form of contamination (57.5%), immunized against hepatitis B (65.9%), undergoing drug therapy (85.1%) with Ribavirin (55.6%); And 70.2% had adverse effects. Conclusion Sociodemographic and clinical characterization assist the clinical practice of the multiprofessional team with patients with chronic hepatitis C.

RESUMO Objetivo Descrever a caracterização sociodemográfica e clínica dos pacientes portadores de hepatite C crônica acompanhados no ambulatório de um hospital referência em infectologia. Método Estudo transversal, descritivo, quantitativo, com usuários portadores de hepatite C crônica assistidos no ambulatório de um hospital referência durante Novembro 2015 a Abril de 2016 com uma amostra de 47 usuários. Resultados Os participantes encontram-se no sexo masculino (76,6%) com faixa etária acima de 57 anos (57,5%), pardo (38,3%), casado (55,3%), com grau de escolaridade fundamental incompleto (31,9%), e residente na capital (61,7%), com tempo de descoberta de até 6 anos (68,1%), desconhecendo a forma de contaminação (57,5%), realizando tratamento medicamentoso (85,1%) com Ribavirina (55,6%); e 70,2% apresentaram efeitos adversos. Conclusões A caracterização sociodemográfica e clínica auxiliam na prática clínica da equipe multiprofissional com os portadores de hepatite C crônica.

Resultados Los participantes son de sexo masculino (76,6%) con rango de edad superior a 57 años (57,5%), pardo (38,3%), casado (55,3%), con grado de escolaridad (31,9%), y residente en la capital (61,7%), con tiempo de descubrimiento de hasta 6 años (68,1%), desconociendo la forma de contaminación (57,5%), inmunizado contra la hepatitis B (65,9%), realizando tratamiento medicamentoso (85,1%) con Ribavirina (55,6%); Y el 70,2% presentó efectos adversos. Conclusión La caracterización sociodemográfica y clínica auxilian en la práctica clínica del equipo multiprofesional con los portadores de hepatitis C crónica.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Chronic hepatitis C is a leading cause of liver disease. Infection triggers an immediate immune response in the host that is mediated by humoral/cellular mechanisms. T cells respond to infection via secretion of cytokines, which inhibit or stimulate one another, leading to cytokine imbalance and ultimately affecting treatment. Studies using interferon (IFN) and ribavirin (RBV) showed that TCD8+ cells and cytokine levels are associated with sustainable virological response (SVR). However, studies that investigated the effects of triple therapy (TT) are limited. METHODS: The study included hepatitis C virus (HCV)+ RNA, naives, genotype 1, ≥18 years, and advanced fibrosis (F≥3) patients. Samples were collected at baseline and after 12 weeks (W12) of TT. Six cytokines were analyzed by flow cytometry. RESULTS: Of 31 patients, four were excluded (two deaths, one interrupted TT, and one F2 patient). Of the 27 remaining patients, 21 (78%) were cirrhotic. SVR was achieved in 63% of the patients. The patients had a mean age of 55.11 ± 10.03 years. Analyses at baseline showed that the chemokine CCL5/Regulated on Activation, Normal T Cell Expressed and Secreted (RANTES) (p=0.04) and interleukin (IL)-6 (p=0.02), which was associated with SVR. RANTES (p=0.04) and IL-8 (p=0.01) levels were associated with SVR at W12. CONCLUSIONS Similar to patterns observed during double therapy, IL-6, IL-8, and RANTES levels were associated with SVR in TT, indicating the potential role of interferon in immune response to hepatitis C virus.

Abstract Faced with the need for greater knowledge of the different physalis species, the aim of this study was to characterize different Native American physalis species (Physalis peruviana L., Physalis pubescens L., Physalis angulata L., Physalis mínimos L. and Physalis ixocarpa Brot) as to their physicochemical characteristics, bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity. Besides that, in order to increase their use and add even more value to this fruit, we also evaluate the influence of these different species on the physicochemical, rheological and sensory characteristics of physalis jelly. In addition, this study evaluated the sensory acceptance of the combination of physalis jellies obtained from different species with brie-type cheese. The Peruviana, Pubences and Angulata, are highlighted for being the nutritionally richest species, with the highest levels of phenolic compounds, vitamin C and antioxidant. Moreover, they stand out for originating the most widely sensory accepted jellies, either in pure form or in combination with brie-type cheese.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aims to estimate the prevalence of insulin resistance (IR) among chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients and their related laboratory and demographic data. Subjects and methods: In this study, non-diabetic CHC patients referred to Viral Hepatitis Ambulatories from Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) donated blood samples. Insulin was measured using a chemiluminescence immunoassay. IR was determined by HOMA-IR, where HOMA-IR > 2 was defined as IR. Results: A total of 214 CHC patients were recruited (123 females aged 53.6 years ± 10.9 years). IR was present in 133 patients (62.1%) and was associated in bivariate analysis to higher mean values of age (p = 0.040), triglycerides (p = 0.032), glucose (p = 0.000), insulin (p = 0.000), waist circumference (p = 0.001), and body mass index (p = 0.007); however, none of these variables were significant in the multivariate analysis. Conclusions: The high prevalence of IR was observed among CHC patients, and there was no difference in clinical or laboratory parameters when both groups were compared in the multivariate analysis. This high IR prevalence could lead to a high risk for development of cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders.
