Abstract This study aimed to assess the traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) in permanent dentition among patients who attended at the outpatient clinic of a Brazilian dental school, during the last 20 years, and to investigate factors associated with the severity of these injuries. Clinical records of patients who attended a specialized center for dental trauma care in Brazil presenting at least one TDI in a permanent tooth, between the years 2000 and 2019, were reviewed. The data recorded were sex, age, affected arch, etiology, number, and type of the teeth affected, and classification and severity of the TDIs. The diagnosis and classification of the TDIs were based on the guidelines of the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT). The severity of each patient's injuries was defined as mild, moderate, or severe. Descriptive statistics, chi-square and multinomial regression analyses were used to evaluate the results. The significance level was set at 5%. A total of 837 clinical records were included, totaling 2357 teeth. Males were more prevalent than females. The patients' age ranged from 5 to 71 years. The most common traumas were avulsion (n=512) and uncomplicated enamel-dentin fracture (n=488). Univariate analyses showed that there was a statistically significant association between age group (p=0.004), etiology (p=0.000) and number of teeth affected (p=0.000) with severity of dental trauma. In conclusion, TDIs that occurred in Piracicaba and region are epidemiologically similar to those found worldwide, and that more severe injuries are related to age range, etiology and number of teeth affected.

Resumo Esse estudo objetivou avaliar as injúrias dentárias traumáticas (IDTs) na dentição permanente entre os pacientes que compareceram ao ambulatório de uma faculdade de odontologia brasileira, durante os últimos 20 anos, e investigar fatores associados à severidade dessas lesões. Os registros clínicos dos pacientes que compareceram a um centro especializado de atendimento em traumatismo dentário no Brasil apresentando pelo menos uma IDT em dente permanente, entre os anos de 2000 e 2019, foram revisados. Os dados registrados foram sexo, idade, arco dental afetado, etiologia, número e tipo dos dentes afetados, e classificação e severidade das IDTs. O diagnóstico e a classificação das IDTs foram baseados nas diretrizes da Associação Internacional de Traumatologia Dentária (AITD). A gravidade das lesões de cada paciente foi definida como leve, moderada ou severa. Estatísticas descritivas, teste qui-quadrado e análises de regressão multinomial foram usadas para avaliar os resultados. O nível de significância foi fixado em 5%. Um total de 837 registros clínicos foi incluído, totalizando 2357 dentes. O sexo masculino foi mais prevalente que o feminino. A idade dos pacientes variou de 5 a 71 anos. Os traumas mais comuns foram avulsão (n=512) e fratura não-complicada do esmalte-dentina (n=488). As análises univariadas mostraram que houve associação estatisticamente significativa entre a faixa etária (p=0,004), etiologia (p=0,000) e número de dentes afetados (p=0,000) com a gravidade do traumatismo dentário. Em conclusão, as IDTs que ocorreram em Piracicaba e região são epidemiologicamente semelhantes aos encontrados em todo o mundo, e que lesões mais graves estão relacionadas à faixa etária, etiologia e número de dentes afetados.

Abstract The Santos Basin (SB) is the main petroliferous basin in the Brazilian continental margin and one of the most studied marine areas in Brazil. However, historical data suggest that new efforts should be carried out to acquire quantitative biological data, especially in the deep sea, to establish the baseline of essential ocean variables in different ecosystems for future monitoring programs. The Brazilian energy company Petrobras planned and executed 24 oceanographic cruises over a period of 2 years to assess the benthic (SANSED cruise) and pelagic (SANAGU cruise) systems of the SB (356 days at sea in 2019 and 2021/2022). These efforts were part of the Santos Project, which comprised a comprehensive environmental study aimed at investigating benthic and pelagic variables to characterize ecology, biogeochemistry, thermohaline properties of water masses, and ocean circulation patterns, geomorphology, and sedimentology, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Here we present the detailed sampling designs and the field methods employed on board, during the SB scientific cruises. All sampling protocols were based on standardized approaches. For the benthos analyses, triplicate sediment samples were performed using a GOMEX-type box corer (0.25 m²) or a large modified Van Veen grab (0.75 m²) at 100 stations ranging from 25 to 2400 m depth. At each station, 25 geochemical and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed in addition to micro-, meio-, and macrofauna and living foraminifera samples. For the pelagic system, 60 stations were selected to investigate the plankton community, ranging in size from pico- to macroplankton, through vertical, horizontal, and oblique net hauls (20, 200, and 500 μm mesh size), as well as 25 biogeochemical parameters collected with an aid of a CTD-rosette sampler. Part of this scientific information also serves the Regional Environmental Characterization Project (PCR-BS) in support of Petrobras’ Santos Basin drilling licensing process led by the Brazilian Environmental Agency – IBAMA. This project contributes to the sustainable development of the SB, in line with the guidelines of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

ABSTRACT Objective: To compare the body mass index (BMI) and the weight loss (WL) in patients with dentofacial deformities who underwent monomaxillary versus bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. Materials and Methods: This prospective longitudinal study included 69 patients with dentofacial deformities who underwent surgical orthodontic treatment. Patients were divided into two groups according to the type of orthognathic surgery: monomaxillary or bimaxillary. A preoperative nutritional assessment based on BMI was performed; the percentage of involuntary WL between the preoperative and postoperative periods was also calculated. Data were collected at preoperative and 10, 40, and 90 days postoperative (PO). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 17.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA), and data are reported with 95% confidence interval. Results: According to BMI, patients who underwent monomaxillary surgery presented: underweight = 2.6%, normal weight = 51.3%, overweight = 35.9%, and obese = 10.3%. The subjects who underwent bimaxillary surgery presented: normal weight = 43.3%, overweight = 36.7%, and obese = 20%. BMI was similar between the groups at all time points (preoperative, p= 0.237; 10 days PO, p= 0.325; 40 days PO, p= 0.430; and 90 days PO, p= 0.609). All patients lost weight postoperatively, and WL was similar among the PO measurements (p= 0.163). Conclusions: Although both monomaxillary and bimaxillary orthognathic surgeries resulted in WL and lower BMI, there was no statistically significant difference in these metrics between the two types of surgery.

RESUMO Objetivo: Comparar o Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC) e a perda de peso (PP) de pacientes com deformidades dentofaciais após cirurgia ortognática monomaxilar e bimaxilar. Material e Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo longitudinal prospectivo em 69 pacientes com deformidade dentofacial submetidos a tratamento cirúrgico-ortodôntico. Os pacientes foram divididos em dois grupos: cirurgia ortognática monomaxilar e bimaxilar. Foi realizada avaliação nutricional pré-operatória de acordo com o IMC. Foi calculada a porcentagem de PP involuntária entre o pré e o pós-operatório (PO). A coleta de dados foi realizada no pré-operatório e aos 10, 40 e 90 dias PO. A análise estatística foi realizada no software SPSS v. 17.0, com intervalo de confiança de 95%. Resultados: De acordo com o IMC, os indivíduos submetidos à cirurgia monomaxilar apresentaram: baixo peso = 2,6%, peso normal = 51,3%, sobrepeso = 35,9% e obesidade = 10,3%. Entre os indivíduos submetidos à cirurgia bimaxilar, 43,3% estavam com peso normal, 36,7% estavam com sobrepeso e 20% eram obesos. O IMC foi semelhante em todos os períodos (pré-operatório, p= 0,237; 10 dias PO, p= 0,325; 40 dias PO, p= 0,430; e 90 dias PO, p= 0,609). Todos os pacientes perderam peso no pós-operatório. A PP foi semelhante entre os tempos de PO (p= 0,163). Conclusões: A cirurgia ortognática monomaxilar ou bimaxilar pode causar redução do peso corporal e diminuição no IMC, mas não há diferença estatisticamente significativa entre esses dois tipos de cirurgia em relação à PP e ao IMC.

ABSTRACT The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the resilience of health systems. In this paper, we seek to explore elements to support a research agenda on resilience for the Unified Health System (SUS). First, based on a scoping review, we analyzed the conceptual and methodological development of resilience applied to health systems research both at international and national levels, identifying who the formulating groups are and what they propose as analytical frameworks. Then, we propose an analytical framework adapted for the Brazilian health system features. The framework underpinned the pointing out of critical issues to be investigated in research on SUS resilience, based on four dimensions: governance and leadership, financing, resources (workforce, infrastructure, medicines, and technologies), and service provision. Finally, we discuss opportunities and challenges for implementing a research agenda on resilience for the SUS.

RESUMO A pandemia provocada pela Covid-19 deu relevância à resiliência dos sistemas de saúde. Neste artigo, buscou-se explorar elementos que subsidiem uma agenda de pesquisa sobre resiliência para o Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). A partir de revisão de escopo, analisou-se o desenvolvimento conceitual e metodológico da resiliência aplicada à pesquisa sobre sistemas de saúde em nível internacional e nacional, identificando quem são os grupos formuladores e o que propõem como modelos de análise. Em seguida, apresentou-se uma proposta de modelo de análise de resiliência adaptada às características do sistema de saúde brasileiro. O modelo embasou o apontamento de questões-chave a serem investigadas em pesquisas sobre a resiliência do SUS, a partir de quatro dimensões: governança e liderança, financiamento, recursos (força de trabalho, infraestrutura, medicamentos e tecnologias) e prestação de serviços. Ao final, discutem-se oportunidades e desafios para implementação de uma agenda de pesquisas de resiliência para o SUS.

Policy drift in ideologically heterogeneous governments: tax policy in Latin America

Resumo A relação entre tributação e partidarismo é amplamente estudada na Ciência Política. Entretanto, trabalhos anteriores não só apresentaram resultados contraditórios - sem esclarecer quais partidos são mais propensos a instituir tributos progressivos - como nenhum considerou um elemento particular da política latino-americana: os governos de coalizão. Usando o nível de arrecadação com tributos diretos como uma proxy para tributação progressiva e adotando um banco de dados em painel, investiga-se a receita com tributos progressivos considerando uma escala da ideologia da liderança executiva e a heterogeneidade ideológica da coalizão que forma o governo. Os resultados indicam que governos ideologicamente heterogêneos apresentam policy drift, já que as políticas sendo implementadas se distanciam das preferências originais da liderança executiva. Governos homogêneos de esquerda têm receitas maiores com tributos diretos do que governos formados a partir de coalizão ideologicamente heterogênea sob as mesmas lideranças. A mesma dinâmica ocorre com governos homogêneos de direita, que têm receitas maiores com tributos indiretos. Os resultados indicam novos caminhos para pesquisa, destacando a necessidade de se incorporar a composição de um governo à análise de políticas públicas, como a importância de se compreender o mecanismo pelo qual policy drift ocorre em governos ideologicamente heterogêneos.

Abstract The relation between taxation and partisanship is a widely studied topic in Political Science. However, previous works have provided conflicting findings without clarifying which parties are most prone to progressive taxation. These studies also did not consider one distinctive feature of Latin American politics: coalition governments. Using the level of direct tax collection as a proxy for progressive taxation and panel data of Latin American countries since 1990, we investigate how progressive taxes vary across a scale of ideology observed in the executive branch along with the ideological heterogeneity of its coalition. The results show that ideologically heterogeneous governments present a policy drift, as the policies being enacted depart from parties’ original preferences. Homogeneous left-wing governments collect more direct taxes than ideologically heterogeneous coalitions led by governments with the same ideology. The same dynamic is observed with homogeneous right-wing governments, which collect more indirect taxes in ideologically homogeneous coalitions. These results create new paths of research highlighting the need to include the government’s composition in the analysis to understand policy design and the need to unravel the mechanism through which policy drift occurs in ideologically heterogeneous governments.

Resumen La relación entre tributación y partidismo es un tema ampliamente estudiado en Ciencias Políticas. Sin embargo, trabajos previos han proporcionado hallazgos contradictorios sin aclarar qué partes son más propensas a la tributación progresiva. Estos estudios tampoco consideraron una característica distintiva de la política latinoamericana: los gobiernos de coalición. Utilizando el nivel de recaudación de impuestos directos como indicador de la tributación progresiva y datos de panel de los países de América Latina desde 1990, investigamos cómo varían los impuestos progresivos a lo largo de una escala de ideología observada en el poder ejecutivo junto con la heterogeneidad ideológica de su coalición. Los resultados muestran que los gobiernos ideológicamente heterogéneos presentan un policy drift, ya que las políticas que se promulgan se apartan de las preferencias originales de los partidos. Los gobiernos homogéneos de izquierda recaudan más impuestos directos que las coaliciones ideológicamente heterogéneas lideradas por gobiernos con la misma ideología. La misma dinámica se observa con gobiernos homogéneos de derecha, que recaudan más impuestos indirectos en coaliciones ideológicamente homogéneas. Estos resultados crean nuevos caminos de investigación que destacan la necesidad de incluir la composición del gobierno en el análisis para comprender el diseño de políticas y la necesidad de desentrañar el mecanismo a través del cual se produce policy drift de políticas en gobiernos ideológicamente heterogéneos.

Abstract The Direct Strength Method (DSM) is a well-known formulation presented in the Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 14762:2010, that estimates the strength capacity of cold-formed steel (CFS) members. However, this formulation requires the elastic critical buckling loads as point of departure, regarding local (L), distortional (D) and global (G) modes, which can be obtained by (i) elastic buckling analysis or (ii) available direct equations. The present study is dedicated to the development of a computer program, FStr Computer Application, with graphical user interface (GUI), in order to make the buckling analysis easier and approachable for both research activities and engineering design of thin-walled structures with arbitrary cross-sections (sections combining closed cells with open branches). The proposed application uses the Finite Strip Method (FSM), mainly focused on a simple and accessible GUI, which was implemented in the MATLAB App Designer. Validation of the FStr was performed with the help of examples of open and closed cross-sections and comparison with the results of acknowledged computer programs, such as CUFSM and GBTul, based respectively on FSM and GBT (Generalized Beam Theory), as well as analytical procedures for the case of the global buckling modes. Both, the critical buckling loads expressed by the computed signature curve and the correspondent critical buckling modes are compared, confirming the adequate performance of the proposed computational tool. As future research, the authors plan updates for the FStr Computer Application, including the computation of the buckling modal participation and the automatic strength predictions, based on the DSM-based design prescriptions.

Abstract Buckling mode interaction in cold-formed steel (CFS) members must be considered for the structural design, which may lead to a significant reduction of the structural strength, usually recognized as erosion of the limit load. So far, the distortional-global (DG) buckling interaction is not covered by codes, e.g. Brazilian code NBR 14762:2010. The present investigation is aimed at the DG interaction of CFS lipped channel (LC) columns, which is the most usual section. The methodology evolves a parametric analysis, over a single LC column under DG buckling interaction. First, a study of initial geometric imperfection (IGI) sensibility is performed, with the purpose of understanding the influence of the IGI on the column’s behavior. Moreover, the parametric analysis is extended to a set of yielding stress and column lengths, to understand the ultimate load under different types of DG buckling interaction natures. Conclusions on this research have been shown that the actual global buckling equation from the Direct Strength Method is already suitable to cover the DG buckling interaction for the case of lipped channel columns.

RESUMO O presente estudo objetivou avaliar o comportamento agudo do índice de resistência da artéria braquial (IRAB) e da artéria poplítea (IRAP) em resposta a exercícios de força de baixa intensidade envolvendo pequenos (PGM) e grandes grupos musculares (GGM), realizado com e sem restrição de fluxo sanguíneo. Onze homens (idade 23 ± 3,29 anos) realizaram um experimento randomizado, cruzado, com quatro braços: Exercício para pequenos grupos musculares (PGM), pequenos grupos musculares com restrição de fluxo sanguíneo (PGM+RFS), grandes grupos musculares (GGM) e grandes grupos musculares com restrição de fluxo sanguíneo (GGM+RFS). O comportamento de IRAB e IRAP foi avaliado em repouso, mediatamente após o exercício, e aos 15 e 30 minutos da recuperação. A análise dos dados mostrou uma redução significativa do IRAB do repouso para o pós-exercício apenas nos protocolos de PGM com ou sem RFS (p <0,05). Protocolos envolvendo GGM, independentemente do BFR, não afetaram o IRAP (p> 0,05), porém, foram eficientes para promover aumentos significativos do IRAB (p <0,05) imediatamente após o exercício. Nossos achados indicam que os exercícios envolvendo PGM, independentemente da BFR, são capazes de promover a vasodilatação local (artéria braquial), porém, sem efeitos sistêmicos. Nenhum dos protocolos analisados afetou o comportamento do IRAP.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to evaluate the acute behavior of the brachial artery resistance index (BARI) and popliteal artery resistance index (PARI) in response to low intensity strength exercises involving small (SMG) and large muscle groups (LMG) performed with and without blood flow restriction. Eleven men (age 23 ± 3.29 years) underwent a four-arm, randomized, cross-over experiment: Small muscle group exercise (SMG), small muscle groups with blood flow restriction (SMG+BFR), large muscle groups (LMG) and large muscle groups with blood flow restriction (LMG+BFR). The behavior of BARI and PARI was evaluated at rest, immediately after exercise, and at 15 and 30 minutes during recovery. Data analysis showed a significant reduction of the BARI from rest to post-exercise only in the protocols involving SMG, regardless of the BFR (p <0.05). Protocols involving LMG, with or without BFR, did not affect PARI (p> 0.05), but were efficient to promote significant increases in BARI (p <0.05) immediately after exercise. Our findings indicate that the exercises involving SMG, regardless of BFR, are efficient to promote local vasodilatation (brachial artery), but without systemic effects. None of the analyzed protocols affected the PARI behavior.

Resumo Por que os brasileiros não confiam em partidos políticos? Essa é a pergunta-chave deste artigo. Analisa-se essa pergunta com a mobilização de hipóteses da área, englobando argumentos racionalistas e culturalistas. Para respondê-la, utiliza-se de survey representativo da população brasileira e conduzido pelo Nupps/USP em 2014, em que regressões logísticas ordinais são executadas. Os resultados mostram, em primeiro lugar, que hipóteses avaliativas e a confiança interpessoal são os condicionantes dessa atitude no país. Em segundo lugar, observa-se que os efeitos dessas hipóteses são assimétricos, levando a uma reflexão acerca das diferenças conceituais entre desconfiança e confiança em partidos no Brasil para um melhor entendimento das dinâmicas da representação no país.

Abstract Why do Brazilians not trust political parties? This is the key question of this article. This work first analyzes the question by mobilizing the hypotheses advanced in the literature, comprehending rationalist and culturalist arguments. To answer it, we use data from a representative survey in Brazil conducted by Nupps/USP in 2014, executing ordinal logistic regressions. The results show, first, that evaluative hypotheses and interpersonal trust are the determinants of this attitude in the country and, second, that the effects of these hypotheses are asymmetrical, leading to remarks about the conceptual differences between distrust and trust in political parties in Brazil, promoting a better understanding of the dynamics of representation in the country.

Resumen ¿Por qué los brasileños no confían en los partidos políticos? Esta es la pregunta clave en este artículo. Se analiza esta pregunta utilizando las hipótesis de la literatura, articulando argumentos racionalistas e culturalistas. Para responder a esto, los datos utilizados son los resultados de una encuesta representativa de la población brasileña y conducida por NUPPS/USP en 2014, donde regresiones logísticas ordinales son ejecutadas. Los resultados muestran, en primer lugar, que hipótesis evaluativas y la confianza interpersonal son condicionantes de esta actitud en el país. En segundo lugar, es posible observar que los efectos de estas hipótesis son asimétricos, llevando a reflexiones sobre diferencias conceptuales entre la desconfianza y confianza en los partidos políticos en Brasil, para una mejor comprensión de las dinámicas representativas en el país.

Résumé Pourquoi les Brésiliens ne font-ils pas confiance aux partis politiques ? C’est la question clé de cet article. On analyse cette question en mobilisant des hypothèses de la littérature, y compris des arguments rationalistes et culturalistes. Pour y répondre, on utilise les données d’une enquête menée par NUPPS/USP en 2014, sur un échantillon représentatif de la population brésilienne, en utilisant des régressions logistiques ordinales. En premier lieu, les résultats montrent que des hypothèses évaluatives et la confiance interpersonnelle sont les déterminants de cette attitude dans le pays. En second lieu, on observe que ces effets sont asymétriques, ouvrant la réflexion sur les différences conceptuelles entre méfiance et confiance envers les partis politiques au Brésil, afin de mieux comprendre la dynamique de représentation dans le pays.

ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of soybean oil in the diet of female silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) and its effect on the growth, composition, lipid profile and fillet acceptability thereof. In this experiment, 144 fish (237.75 ± 22.35 g) were distributed among 18 tanks (280 L) for 80 days. The use of 10% soybean oil in the fishes’ diet promoted higher weights (373.82 g) and better feed conversión ratios (1.5) for female silver catfish. The soybean oil levels tested did not interfere with fillet acceptability. Increasing soybean oil in the diet increased the quantity of unsaturated fatty acids in the fillets, which enhanced their nutritional quality. The use of 10% soybean oil is recommended for the female silver catfish diet.

RESUMEN. El objetivo de este estudio fue el de evaluar la inclusión de aceite de soya en dietas, sobre el crecimiento, la composición, el perfil lipídico y la aceptabilidad de los filetes de hembras de bagre plateado (Rhamdia quelen). En este experimento realizado durante 80 días, se utilizaron un total de 144 peces (237,75 ± 22,35 g) distribuidos en 18 tanques (280 L). Se observó que el uso de 10% de aceite de soya en la dieta promueve mayor peso (373,82 g) y una mejor relación de conversión alimenticia (1,5) para las hembras de bagre plateado. Los niveles de aceite de soya de las muestras no interfirieron en la aceptabilidad del filete. El aumento de aceite de soya en la dieta aumentó la cantidad de ácidos grasos insaturados en el filete, mejorando así su calidad nutricional. Se recomienda el uso de 10% de aceite de soya en la dieta para las hembras de bagre plateado.

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a influência da adição de farinha de resíduos de jundiá (Rhamdia quelen) na dieta de exemplares desta espécie sobre a bioquímica plasmática, parâmetros hepáticos e digestivos. No experimento I (EXP I), compararam-se dietas com 30% de farinha de carne e ossos suína (FCO), farinha de carcaça de jundiás com vísceras (FCJCV), farinha de carcaça de jundiá sem vísceras (FCJSV) e farinha de jundiás inteiros (FJI). No experimento II (EXP II), níveis de inclusão de FCJCV foram testados (0; 3,75; 7,5; 15 e 30%). No plasma, foram quantificadas proteínas totais circulantes, colesterol total, triglicerídeos, glicose, albumina e aminoácidos. No fígado, analisou-se glicose, amônia, proteínas totais, glicogênio, aminoácidos e transaminases. No estômago, foi determinada a atividade de protease ácida e, no intestino, tripsina e quimotripsina. No EXP I, foram observados menores níveis de glicose no plasma e alanina aminotransferase (ALT) no fígado, para o tratamento FCJSV, e maiores índices destes para FCO. A atividade da protease ácida e da quimotripsina foram menores para a FCO e maior para a FCJCV. No EXP II, os índices de aminoácidos livres e colesterol total no plasma aumentaram com a elevação dos níveis de inclusão da FCJCV na dieta. A incorporação de farinhas de resíduos de jundiá à dieta altera a bioquímica plasmática, os parâmetros hepáticos e digestivos dos juvenis de jundiá, porém essas alterações não influenciaram na saúde dos peixes, demonstrando sua qualidade nutricional e eficiência no uso em dietas para peixes.

The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of the addition of jundiá (Rhamdia quelen) waste meal in the diet of this species, on plasmatic biochemistry, liver and digestive parameters. Experiment I (EXP I) compared diets with 30% of meat and swine bones (FCO), Jundiá carcass meal with viscera (FCJCV), Jundiá carcass meal without viscera (FCJSV) and full Jundiá meal (FJI). In experiment II (EXP II), different FCJCV levels were tested (0, 3.75, 7.5, 15, and 30%). Total circulating proteins, cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose, albumin and amino acids were quantified in plasma. Glucose, ammonia, total protein, glycogen, amino acids and transaminases were analyzed in the liver. The acid protease activity was determined in the stomach, and trypsin and chymotrypsin activity were established in the intestine. EXP I, found a lower glucose concentration in plasma and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in the liver for FCJSV treatment and higher levels of these parameters for FCO treatment. The activity of acid protease and chymotrypsin were lower for FCO and higher for FCJCV. In EXP II, rates of free amino acids and total cholesterol in plasma increased with increasing levels FCJCV dietary. The incorporation of Jundiá waste meal diet modified plasmatic biochemistry, liver and digestive parameters of Jundiá juveniles, but these changes did not influence the fish health, demonstrating its nutritional quality and efficiency in fish diet.

Heparin is mainly found in mastocytes, and during many decades the studies of the coagulation mechanism were focused on this hetero-polysaccaride. Dermatan sulfate has a more abundant distribution on tissues and on the blood vascular system. On the other hand, the anticoagulant activity of the second cofactor of heparin is stimulated by dermatan sulfate, but using ten times less concentration than heparin. Our earlier experiments with heparin and Concanavalin A, and heparin and the first protein of the complement system, C1, have shown the isolation in the heparin molecule by precipitation with both proteins of fractions with very high anticoagulant activity. In both cases the use of very low ionic strength and the presence of calcium ions were necesary. We have extended those experiments to the interaction with dermatan sulfate, and we have also obtained a fraction of dermatan sulfate in the precipitate with very low molecular weight, and with four times higher anticoagulant activity than the fraction that remains in the supernatant. The sulfate content of this fraction is three times higher, as well as its capacity for thrombous inhibition. Molecular weight of this fraction is 8000 Daltons.

El descubrimiento del cofactor II de la heparina (HCoII), desplazó el enfoque de las investigaciones sobre el mecanismo de la coagulación desde la heparina, que se encuentra fundamentalmente en los mastocitos, hacia el dermatán sulfato (DS) que posee una distribución mucho más amplia en los tejidos y en las paredes de los vasos sanguíneos. El nuevo cofactor de la heparina es el único cuya actividad anticoagulante es estimulada por el DS, en concentraciones diez veces menores que la heparina y el heparán sulfato (HS). Se ha descripto el aislamiento de fracciones de la heparina con muy alta actividad anticoagulante a través de la interacción con la Concanavalina A y con la primera proteína del sistema del complemento (C1). En ambos casos fueron imprescindibles condiciones de baja fuerza iónica y presencia de iones calcio. Los experimentos con la heparina se extendieron al DS en presencia del C1, utilizando las mismas condiciones experimentales descriptas, y se determinaron la actividad biológica y el grado de sulfatación de las subpoblaciones aisladas después de la interacción. Se obtuvo en el precipitado una fracción del DS de bajo peso molecular con una actividad anticoagulante cuatro veces mayor que el material inicial, un contenido en sulfatos aproximadamente tres veces mayor, y tres veces más capacidad de inhibición de la formación de trombos. El peso molecular de esta fracción es inferior a 8.000 Daltons.
