Resumen Las relaciones serológicas y la diversidad genética de cepas argentinas de grapevine leafroll associated virus 4 (GLRaV-4) fueron analizadas. El análisis filogenético de la cápside proteica (CP) conducido sobre las secuencias obtenidas mostró un agrupamiento de las primeras con GLRaV-4 raza 5, GLRaV-4 raza 6 y GLRaV-4 raza 9. El análisis evolutivo de las secuencias locales y las disponibles en bases de datos infirió eventos de recombi nación y sugirió que tanto los extremos C-terminal como N-terminal de la CP están bajo presión de selección purificante, pero la región N-terminal mostró siete sitios bajo presión de selección positiva, con una relación d N/d S cinco veces mayor que aquellas posiciones de la región C-terminal. La reactividad serológica contra anticuerpos monoclonales sustenta la probabilidad de ocurrencia de epitopes lineales en la región N-terminal inferida en el análisis evolutivo. Los resultados obtenidos reflejan un comportamiento evolutivo inusual de la CP y junto con la reactividad serológica de dicha proteína, permiten postular una significancia biológica de dicha variabilidad.

Abstract This research studied serological relationships and genetic diversity of Argentinean isolates of grapevine leafroll-associated virus-4 (GLRaV-4). Phylogenetic analysis of coat protein (CP) sequences from 19 local isolates revealed clustering with the previously described GLRaV-4 strain 5, strain 6, and strain 9 groups. Evolutionary sequence analysis of the obtained and database-available sequences showed evidence of recombination events. Additionally, both CP N- and C-terminal regions appeared to be under purifying selection, but the N-terminal region presented seven sites under positive selection, with a d N/d S ratio 5-fold greater than that of the C-terminal region. Serological reactivity against monoclonal antibodies supports a higher occurrence probability for linear epitopes in the N-terminal region, as inferred by the sequence analysis. The obtained results reflect an unusual evolutionary behavior of the CP that, together with protein serological reactivity, suggests biological significance of the observed variability.

SUMMARY: Tissue clearing techniques are frequently used in the observation and description of anatomical structures and pathways without altering the three-dimensional layout of the anatomical specimen. Tissue optical clearing promotes preservation of three-dimensional structures, which allows the study of the internal anatomy in its original position and original spatial interaction. Among these techniques, Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) maceration clearing is one of the most widely used. However, the histological changes of tissue after KOH maceration have yet to be fully understood. Our aim is to describe the microscopical differences between macerated and normal tissue. To better understand said changes, two human fetuses with a gestation period of 16 to 28 weeks were cleared and processed for histological analysis. Microtome slides of the fetuses’ lower limbs were obtained and stained with Hematoxylin & Eosin, Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS), and Masson’s trichrome with the purpose of observing the histological and macromolecule composition changes in cleared tissue. Remarkable differences at a histological level regarding the composition of the cellular structures, since diaphanized tissues showed a predominance of extracellular matrix composed of collagen fibers with the absence of most of the nucleated cellular tissue. Phospholipid’s saponification, nucleic acids degradation and a change on proteins structural properties are the main factors inducing clearing. At the same time, molecular stability of collagen in alkaline conditions allows the specimen to maintain its shape after the process.

RESUMEN: Las técnicas de limpieza de tejido se utilizan con frecuencia en la observación y descripción de estructuras y vías anatómicas sin alterar el diseño tridimensional de la muestra anatómica. El aclaramiento óptico de tejidos promueve la preservación de estructuras tridimensionales, lo que permite el estudio de la anatomía interna en su posición original y la interacción espacial original. Entre estas técnicas, el aclarado por maceración con Hidróxido de Potasio (KOH) es una de las más utilizadas. Sin embargo, los cambios histológicos del tejido después de la maceración con KOH aún no se han entendido por completo. Nuestro objetivo es describir las diferencias microscópicas entre el tejido macerado y el normal. Para entender mejor dichos cambios, dos fetos humanos con un período de gestación de 16 a 28 semanas fueron aclarados y procesados para análisis histológicos. Se obtuvieron microtomos de las extremidades inferiores de los fetos y se tiñeron con hematoxilina y eosina, ácido peryódico de Schiff (PAS) y tricrómico de Masson con el fin de observar los cambios histológicos y de composición de macromoléculas en el tejido aclarado. Diferencias notables a nivel histológico en cuanto a la composición de las estructuras celulares, ya que los tejidos diafanizados mostraban un predominio de matriz extracelular compuesta por fibras de colágeno con ausencia de la mayor parte del tejido celular nucleado. La saponificación de los fosfolípidos, la degradación de los ácidos nucleicos y un cambio en las propiedades estructurales de las proteínas son los principales factores que inducen la depuración. Al mismo tiempo, la estabilidad molecular del colágeno en condiciones alcalinas permite que la muestra mantenga su forma después del proceso.

Abstract Objective: This study aimed to describe clinical outcomes of anterolateral thigh (ALT) and radial forearm flap in hypopharyngeal and esophageal reconstruction in a fourth level hospital in Bogotá, Colombia. Methods: This retrospective study included 38 patients who esophageal functional reconstruction using radial forearm or ALT flap at our center between February 2010 and December 2017. Results: Mean age was 51 years. About 80% of the included patients were females. Laryngoesophageal defects were present in 80%. Total circumferential reconstruction was required in 60% of patients. Brachial-radial grafts were performed in 26% and anterolateral thigh flaps in 74%. Overall, early complication rate was 30%, which 20% were fistulae (brachial-radial, 2.8%; ALT free flap, 8.3%). Late complications (20%) included stenosis and distal graft lumen obstruction. Only 10% of patients were unable to tolerate oral feeding and 50% of this patient needed permanent gastrostomy. Regarding oncological follow-up during the 24-month post-operative, no tumor recurrence was observed. Conclusions: Functional outcomes of reconstruction with brachial-radial and ALT flap were satisfying. Our findings suggest that ALT has a lower incidence of post-operative complications than radial forearm flap. The choice of the type of flap will depend on the size and location of the defect. Small and partially covered defects benefit from the use of a radial flap, and for larger and circumferential pharyngeal reconstructions with possible radiotherapy requirements, they benefit from an ALT flap.

Resumen Objetivo: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo describir los resultados clínicos del colgajo anterolateral de muslo y radial de antebrazo, para la reconstrucción hipofaríngea y esofágica en un hospital de cuarto nivel en Bogotá, Colombia. Métodos: Estudio retrospectivo inlcuyo 38 pacientes a los que se les realizó reconstrucción funcional esofágica con colgajo de antebrazo radial o anterolateral de muslo (ALT) entre febrero de 2010 y diciembre de 2017. Resultados: Edad media fue de 51 años. El 80% genero femeninp. Los defectos laringoesofágicos estuvieron presentes en el 80%. Se requirió reconstrucción circunferencial total en el 60% de los pacientes. Se realizaron injertos braquio-radiales en el 26% y colgajos anterolaterales de muslo en el 74%. La tasa global de complicaciones tempranas fue del 30%, de las cuales el 20% fueron fístulas (braquio-radial, 2,8%; colgajo libre de ALT, 8,3%). Las complicaciones tardías (20%) incluyeron estenosis y obstrucción de la luz del injerto distal. Solo el 10% de los pacientes no pudieron tolerar la alimentación oral y el 50% de este paciente necesitó gastrostomía permanente. En cuanto al seguimiento oncológico durante el postoperatorio de 24 meses, no se observó recidiva tumoral. Conclusión: Los resultados funcionales de la reconstrucción con colgajo braquio-radial y ALT fueron satisfactorios. Nuestros hallazgos sugieren que la ALT tiene una menor incidencia de complicaciones posoperatorias que el colgajo radial de antebrazo. La elección del tipo de colgajo dependerá del tamaño y la ubicación del defecto. Los defectos pequeños y parcialmente cubiertos se benefician del uso de un colgajo radial, y para reconstrucciones faríngeas más grandes y circunferenciales con posibles requisitos de radioterapia, se benefician de un colgajo ALT.

Resumen La neumonía en el paciente inmunocomprometido es un reto diagnóstico al cual el clínico se enfrenta cada vez con más frecuencia , al momento de hablar de infiltrados en vidrio esmerilado es menester tener siempre en cuenta la posibilidad de neumonía por Pneumocystis Jirovecii, que por mucho tiempo se pensó como una enfermedad propia del huésped inmunosuprimido con VIH, a través del tiempo se ha manifestado en pacientes con trasplantes de órgano sólido y de precursores hematopoyéticos, asociado a autoinmunidad, al uso crónico de corticoesteroides y más recientemente al uso de terapia biológicas. La descripción de esta enfermedad y sus métodos diagnósticos en huéspedes inmunosuprimidos no VIH no es del todo claro, sabemos que el tratamiento de elección en estos casos es el trimetropin-sulfametoxazol (TMP-SMX) el cual no cuenta con evidencia de alta calidad al momento de plantear una dosis ni un tiempo de duración establecidos. Presentamos el caso de un paciente con diagnóstico de glomerulonefritis por enfermedad de cambios mínimos corticodependiente y quien desarrolló neumonía por Pneumocystis Jirovecii confirmada por histopatología quien recibió tratamiento y tuvo un desenlace positivo.

Abstract The pneumonia in the immunocompromised patient is a diagnostic challenge that the clinician faces more and more frequently, every time we talk about ground glass infiltrates it is necessary to always take into account the possibility of pneumonia due to Neumocystis Jirovecii, which for a long time was thought as a disease of the immunosuppressed host with HIV, but that across the time it has manifested itself in patients with solid organ transplants and hematopoietic precursors, associated with autoimmunity, the chronic use of corticosteroids and more recently the use of biological therapy. The description of this disease and the diagnostic methods in non-HIV immunosuppressed hosts is not entirely clear, we know that the treatment of choice in these cases is trimethropin-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), which does not have high-quality evidence at the time of a dose or a time of established duration. We present the case of a patient diagnosed with glomerulonephritis due to corticodependent minimal change disease and who suffers from pneumocystis Jirovecii pneumonia confirmed by histopathology, which received treatment and had a positive outcome

Abstract At the interface between intellectual history and sociology of education, the article addresses the uses of Antonio Gramsci made by the Argentinian Justa Ezpeleta and the Mexican Elsie Rockwell in the 70s and the 80s in the framework of the structuring of a critical educational ethnographic from the Department of Educational Research (DIE, which stands for Departamento de Investigaciones Educativas in Spanish), Federal District (Mexico). During the 60s/70s, in a context marked by political and theoretical radicalization, the academic training of Rockwell and Ezpeleta was settled. This context allowed them a creative approach to the critical paradigm and innovative educational experiences. With the irruption of the 1976 civic-military coup in Argentina, Ezpeleta will seek refuge in the Federal District and will find his place of work in DIE. Rockwell had worked at that institution since 1973, committed to the preparation and monitoring of textbooks. DIE will be the meeting place between Ezpeleta and Rockwell where they will show a unique line of research: critical educational ethnography. Although it had a history, the authors established an original perspective. Among his theoretical references, Gramsci's thought of wide political and academic circulation stood out during the 70s and the 80s in Mexico. The article considers that in the construction of educational ethnography, the Gramscian writings were used on four levels: (a) to base the epistemological perspective; (b) elucidate the historicity of the link between State, civil society and school institution; (c) analyze the daily presences of the junior classes in the school; (d) lay the foundations for an educational political project based on autonomy and popular prominence. Although the reception of Gramsci in Mexico during the 70s and 80s is increasingly being investigated, the educational level constitutes a vacancy. The article exposes results produced through qualitative strategies and methodological techniques.

Resumen En la interfaz entre la historia intelectual y la sociología de la educación, el artículo aborda los usos de Antonio Gramsci efectuados por la argentina Justa Ezpeleta y la mexicana Elsie Rockwell en los años 70 y 80 en el marco de la estructuración de una etnográfica educativa crítica desde el Departamento de Investigaciones Educativas (DIE), Distrito Federal (México). Durante los años 60/70, en un contexto signado por la radicalización política y teórica, se dirimió la formación académica de Rockwell y Ezpeleta. Tal contexto les permitió un acercamiento creativo al paradigma crítico y a innovadoras experiencias educativas. Ante la irrupción del golpe cívico militar de 1976 en Argentina, Ezpeleta buscará refugio en el Distrito Federal y encontrará en el DIE su lugar de trabajo. Rockwell trabajaba en la institución desde 1973, comprometida en la elaboración y seguimiento de libros de textos. Será el DIE el espacio de encuentro entre Ezpeleta y Rockwell, donde desplegarán una singular línea de investigación: la etnografía educativa crítica. Si bien esta contaba con antecedentes, las autoras establecieron una perspectiva original. Entre sus referentes teóricos, sobresalió el pensamiento de Gramsci, de amplia circulación política y académica durante los 70 y 80 en México. El artículo considera que, en la construcción de la etnografía educativa, los escritos gramscianos fueron empleados en cuatro niveles para: (a) fundamentar la perspectiva epistemológica; (b) dilucidar la historicidad del vínculo entre Estado, sociedad civil e institución escolar; (c) analizar las presencias cotidianas de las clases subalternas en la escuela; (d) cimentar un proyecto político educativo basado en la autonomía y el protagonismo popular. Si bien la recepción de Gramsci en México durante los años 70 y 80 está siendo crecientemente indagada, el plano educativo constituye una vacancia. El artículo expone resultados producidos a través de estrategias y técnicas metodológicas de corte cualitativo.

BACKGROUND Flight tones play important roles in mosquito reproduction. Several mosquito species utilise flight tones for mate localisation and attraction. Typically, the female wingbeat frequency (WBF) is lower than males, and stereotypic acoustic behaviors are instrumental for successful copulation. Mosquito WBFs are usually an important species characteristic, with female flight tones used as male attractants in surveillance traps for species identification. Anopheles darlingi is an important Latin American malaria vector, but we know little about its mating behaviors. OBJECTIVES We characterised An. darlingi WBFs and examined male acoustic responses to immobilised females. METHODS Tethered and free flying male and female An. darlingi were recorded individually to determine their WBF distributions. Male-female acoustic interactions were analysed using tethered females and free flying males. FINDINGS Contrary to most mosquito species, An. darlingi females are smaller than males. However, the male’s WBF is ~1.5 times higher than the females, a common ratio in species with larger females. When in proximity to a female, males displayed rapid frequency modulations that decreased upon genitalia engagement. Tethered females also modulated their frequency upon male approach, being distinct if the interaction ended in copulation or only contact. MAIN CONCLUSIONS This is the first report of An. darlingi flight acoustics, showing that its precopulatory acoustics are similar to other mosquitoes despite the uncommon male:female size ratio, suggesting that WBF ratios are common communication strategies rather than a physical constraint imposed by size.

ABSTRACT Mendoza's foothills (32° 50'S) are located in the Andean active orogenic front where the largest Quaternary deformation of the country is concentrated. Particularly, this region presents unique conditions for neotectonic studies of intraplate seismicity. This region is located within the Pampean Flat Slab segment and associated with the subduction of the Juan Fernández Ridge, which causes the absence of volcanism in this segment. Furthermore, tectonically, this sector reflects a change in the deformation style where the morphostructural unit of the Southern Precordillera disappears at this latitude. This active front involves N-S reverse faults affecting Late Pleistocene alluvial surfaces. According to morphometric parameters of these faults, the maximum magnitudes of the possible earthquakes were estimated. Different morphometric indices allow establishing the greatest deformation areas that were validated with complementary indirect methods of interferometry by means of radar images (DINSAR technique). This work summarizes all the studies carried out up to date to understand the active deformation style of the Mendozan foothills.

RESUMEN El piedemonte mendocino (32° 50'S) se localiza en el frente orogénico activo de los Andes, donde se concentra la mayor deformación cuaternaria del país. En particular, esta región presenta condiciones únicas para los estudios neotectónicos de sismicidad de intraplaca. Esta región se ubica dentro del segmento de Flat Slab pampeano y se asocia a la subducción de la Dorsal de Juan Fernández lo que originan la ausencia de vulcanismo en este segmento. Además, tectónicamente, este sector refleja un cambio en el estilo de deformación donde aflora en particular la unidad morfoestructural de la Precordillera Sur que culmina a esta latitud. En este segmento, el frente orogénico activo se asocia a fallas inversas N-S que afectan niveles aluviales pleistocenos tardíos. En función de sus parámetros morfométricos, se han estimado las magnitudes máximas de los sismos posibles y diferentes índices morfométricos que han permitido establecer los sectores de mayor deformación validados con métodos indirectos complementarios de interferometría mediante imágenes radar (técnica DINSAR). Este trabajo resume todos los estudios realizados hasta el momento para comprender el estilo de deformación activa cuaternaria que presenta el piedemonte mendocino.

Abstract This report describes the finding of soft ticks (Ixodida, Argasidae) parasitizing two Andean flickers (Colaptes rupicola) from the Nuñoa district, Melgar province in Puno, Peru (14°31'11.77"S; 70°32'15.95''W; elevation 3967 m). A total of 29 larval ticks were collected directly from the birds and morphologically identified as Argas neghmei. Diagnosis was based on the larval morphology and confirmed by molecular analysis of the tick mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene. A sequence of 363 base pair of this gene showed to be 100% identical with sequences of A. neghmei from Argentina and Chile (GenBank: FJ853598 and DQ295781). This finding confirms the presence of A. neghmei in Peru and adds the Andean flicker as a new host for this species.

Resumen Este informe describe el hallazgo de garrapatas blandas (Ixodida, Argasidae) parasitando a dos carpinteros andinos (Colaptes rupicola) provenientes del distrito de Nuñoa, provincia de Melgar en Puno, Perú (14°31’11.77"S; 70°32’15.95"W; 3967 m de altitud). Un total de 29 larvas de garrapatas fueron colectadas directamente de las aves y posteriormente identificadas morfológicamente como Argas neghmei. El diagnóstico fue basado en la morfología de las larvas y confirmado mediante el análisis molecular del gen 16S ARNr mitocondrial de la garrapata. Un fragmento de 363 pares de bases de este gen mostró una identidad del 100% con secuencias registradas para A. neghmei de Argentina y Chile (GenBank: FJ853598 y DQ295781). Este hallazgo confirma la presencia de A. neghmei en Perú y agrega al carpintero andino como nuevo hospedero para esta garrapata.

Abstract Background: Currently, a double-J catheter is placed in 70% of patients that undergo ureteroscopy because it is believed to decrease obstruction secondary to ureteral edema or stone fragments. However, catheter placement is not innocuous, given that it can result in a variety of side effects, such as urinary frequency, urgency, hematuria, dysuria, and tenesmus, as well as increase costs. The aim of the present study was to evaluate current double-J catheter management in patients after ureteroscopy and the associated postoperative symptoms. Materials and methods: A retrospective study analyzing ureteroscopies performed at the Hospital Dr Manuel Gea Gonzalez throughout 2017 on patients above 18 years of age was conducted. Urology service re-admission frequency during the first postoperative week, the symptoms associated with double-J catheter use, and postoperative complications were evaluated. Results: A total of 105 ureteroscopies were registered. Male sex was predominant (55%) and semirigid ureteroscopies were the most prevalent procedures (71%). A double-J catheter was preoperatively placed in 69 patients and postoperatively placed in 41 patients. During follow-up, the patients with double-J catheter placement presented with associated symptoms warranting an emergency room visit. Pollakiuria was the only significant association found (p=0.001). Ninety-five patients were stone-free, 61 (64.2%) of whom had double-J catheter placement. Two patients with no catheter presented with residual stones. Conclusions: Of the 61 patients with double-J catheter, 57 (82%) presented with at least one symptom related to catheter placement. A total of 64.2% patients with a double-J catheter had uncomplicated ureteroscopy. Therefore, we believe it is necessary to conduct a randomized, prospective study with a larger number of patients to confirm the previously reported results and more clearly and objectively establish the indications for double-J catheter use at our hospital.

Resumen Antecedentes: Actualmente el 70% de los pacientes operados de ureteroscopia reciben colocación de catéter doble J debido a que se cree que disminuye la obstrucción secundaria a edema ureteral o a fragmentos de lito, pero la colocación no es inocua, ya que conlleva una gran variedad de efectos secundarios como frecuencia, urgencia, hematuria, disuria y tenesmo, así como un impacto económico. Nuestro objetivo es evaluar el manejo actual del catéter doble J en pacientes posoperados de ureteroscopia y los síntomas posquirúrgicos asociados. Materiales y métodos: Estudio retrospectivo de ureteroscopias realizadas en el Hospital Dr. Manuel Gea González durante el 2017 en pacientes mayores a 18 años. Se analizaron las frecuencias en readmisiones al servicio de urgencias durante la primera semana posoperatoria y los síntomas asociados al uso de catéter doble J, así como complicaciones posoperatorias. Resultados: Se registraron 105 ureteroscopias. El sexo masculino fue el predominante en hasta 55%; las ureteroscopias semirrígidas fueron las más prevalentes con un 71%. Se colocó preoperatoriamente catéter doble J en 69 pacientes y posoperatoriamente se colocaron en 41 pacientes. Durante el seguimiento los pacientes con colocación de catéter JJ refirieron síntomas asociados a la colocación del catéter, lo cual ameritó visita a urgencias, encontrando únicamente asociación significativa para polaquiuria (p=0.001). Se obtuvo un total de 95 pacientes libre de litiasis, de los cuales a 61 (64.2%) se les colocó catéter doble J y 2 quedaron con litiasis residual y sin catéter. Conclusiones: De los 61 pacientes que se les colocó catéter doble J, 57 (82%) presentaron al menos un síntoma relacionado con el catéter; el 64.2% fueron ureteroscopias no complicadas a las cuales se les colocaron catéter doble J, por lo que creemos necesario realizar un estudio prospectivo y aleatorizado con un mayor número de pacientes para confirmar los resultados previamente reportados y establecer de manera más clara y objetiva las indicaciones para el uso del catéter doble J en nuestro hospital.

ABSTRACT Neuquén province is located in the west of Argentina, at the northern end of Patagonia. In this province, information regarding groundwater distribution and quality is very scarce, and the monitoring of water resources quality is not carried out periodically. It is well known that several pesticide families, such us organophosphates, carbamates and neonicotinoids, are applied in this region to maintain crop quality and production. Pesticide application by ground-based spraying equipment, the climatic conditions and the physical and chemical properties of these compounds, facilitate that a substantial fraction of the active ingredient may reach air, soil and water sources. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pesticide presence in groundwater, in order to provide information about the water quality for human consumption. Seventeen organophosphate and four carbamate residues were monitored from 2014 to 2015 by gas chromatography with a nitrogen-phosphorus detector, in groundwater samples collected from depth wells, located in rural areas corresponding to Senillosa, Plottier, Vista Alegre and Centenario cities, in Neuquén province. These cities are intensive agricultural areas, which supply the North Patagonia region with fresh fruits and vegetables, and where groundwater is utilized for human consumption. In this study, organophosphate and carbamate concentrations were below 0.020 and 0.030 µg/L, respectively, and lower than the accepted limits established by the Guidelines for Canadian drinking water quality (2017) and the Guidelines for drinking water quality (2011) of the World Health Organization for these pesticides.

RESUMEN La provincia de Neuquén está ubicada al oeste de Argentina, en el extremo norte de la Patagonia. En esta provincia, la información sobre la distribución y calidad de las aguas subterráneas es muy escasa y el monitoreo de la calidad de los recursos hídricos no se realiza periódicamente. Es bien sabido que en esta región se aplican varias familias de pesticidas, tales como organofosforados, carbamatos y neonicotinoides, para mantener la calidad y la producción de los cultivos. La aplicación de pesticidas por equipos de pulverización en tierra, las condiciones climáticas y las propiedades físicas y químicas de estos compuestos, facilitan que una fracción sustancial del ingrediente activo pueda llegar a las fuentes de aire, suelo y agua. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la presencia de plaguicidas en aguas subterráneas, con el fin de proporcionar información sobre la calidad del agua para consumo humano. Diecisiete organofosforados y cuatro carbamatos fueron monitoreados entre 2014 y 2015 por cromatografía de gases con detector de nitrógeno-fósforo, en muestras de aguas subterráneas recogidas de pozos profundos ubicados en zonas rurales correspondientes a las ciudades de Senillosa, Plottier, Vista Alegre y Centenario, en la provincia de Neuquén. Estas ciudades son zonas agrícolas intensivas, que abastecen a la región norte de Patagonia con frutas y verduras frescas, y donde el agua subterránea se utiliza para consumo humano. En este estudio, la concentración de organofosforados y carbamatos fue menor a 0.020 y 0.030 μg/L, respectivamente, e inferior a los límites aceptables establecidos por la guías para la calidad del agua potable de Canadá (2017) y de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (2011) para estos plaguicidas.

Plottier and Senillosa are two adjoining towns that belong to the agricultural production area of Upper Valley, Río Negro and Neuquén, North Patagonia. Among the most widely used pesticides, neonicotinoids, carbamates and organophosphates are predominant. The levels of these compounds in surface and groundwater have become a topic of public concern, since the possible impact on health and environment. The aim of this study was the determination of pesticide residue levels in drinking ground-water in the rural areas of Plottier and Senillosa. Carbamates: propoxur, carbofuran, pirimicarb, carbaryl and organophosphate: chlorpyrifos, dimethoate, methidathion, fenaminfos, triazophos, phosmet, azinphos methyl, were analyzed by GC in six sampling sites during insecticide application and non-application season. No pesticide residues were detected by the analytical method used. The detection limit for organophosphates was 0.010 µg/L and 0.030 µg/L for carbamates. These results indicate that good agricultural practices, the physicochemical characteristics of the soil, its thickness, the content of organic matter and the physicochemical properties of pesticides studied are factors that positively contribute to the drinking water quality in the rural population.

Plottier y Senillosa son dos localidades contiguas que forman parte del área de producción agrícola del Alto Valle de Río Negro y Neuquén, Patagonia Norte. Entre los plaguicidas más utilizados predominan las familias de neonicotinoides, carbamatos y organofosforados. El conocimiento de los niveles de estos compuestos en aguas superficiales y subterráneas se ha convertido en un tema de interés social debido a su posible impacto en el ambiente y la salud. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar niveles de residuos de plaguicidas en agua subterránea utilizada para bebida en zonas rurales de Plottier y Senillosa. Se analizaron carbamatos: propoxur, carbofuran, pirimicarb, carbaril y organofosforados: clorpirifos, dimetoato, metidation, fenaminfos, triazofos, fosmet y metil azinfos, por cromatografía gaseosa (GC), en seis sitios de muestreo, durante la época de aplicación y no aplicación de insecticidas. No se detectaron residuos de los plaguicidas estudiados por el método analítico utilizado. El límite de detección fue 0,010 µg/L para organofosforados y 0,030 µg/L para carbamatos. Estos resultados indican que las buenas prácticas agrícolas aplicadas en la zona así como las características fsicoquímicas del suelo, su espesor y el contenido de materia orgánica y las propiedades fsicoquímicas de los plaguicidas estudiados son factores que contribuyen favorablemente a la calidad del agua de bebida de la población rural.

Blinded rechecking is a method proposed for external quality assurance (EQA) of auramine-stained acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smears using fluorescence microscopy (FM), however, this procedure is not well developed and slides fading over time could compromise its implementation. Since bleaching of fluorescent molecules involves temperature-dependent chemical reactions, it is likely that low temperatures could slow down this process. We stored auramine-stained slides under different environmental conditions, including −20 °C, and examined them over time. The slides stored in all the environments faded. At −20 °C, fading was not reduced in relation to room temperature. Restaining and re-examining smears after five months showed that the slides containing saliva and storage at −20 °C were associated with failure in AFB reappearance. In conclusion, the practice of freezing slides until they are viewed should be discouraged as it has a negative effect on blinded rechecking by reducing reading concordance after restaining. Specimen quality should be considered when interpreting FM-EQA results.

La relectura usando microscopía fluorescente con lámpara LED es una metodología propuesta para la evaluación externa de calidad (EEC) de los extendidos teñidos con auramina empleados para detectar bacilos ácido-alcohol resistentes (BAAR), pero el procedimiento está parcialmente desarrollado y la decoloración de los BAAR con el transcurso del tiempo puede comprometer su implementación. La decoloración de moléculas fluorescentes involucra reacciones químicas temperatura-dependientes, por lo que la reducción de la temperatura podría enlentecerla. Guardamos extendidos coloreados en distintas condiciones, incluyendo a −20 °C, y los examinamos a distintos tiempos. Las láminas guardadas en todos los ambientes se decoloraron; a −20 °C la decoloración fue más rápida que a temperatura ambiente. La recoloración evidenció que en extendidos de saliva o conservados a −20 °C existía mayor probabilidad de que los BAAR no reaparecieran. En conclusión, la conservación de extendidos en freezer debe evitarse, ya que reduciría la concordancia de lectura luego de recolorear para la EEC. La calidad de la muestra debe considerarse para interpretar la EEC.

ABSTRACT A new species of Pamphobeteus Pocock, 1901, is described from the Colombian Andes, Medellín, Antioquia. The biochemistry and molecular characteristics of the venom of this new species (previously identified as Pamphobeteus aff. nigricolor ) has been already described. A detailed taxonomic study, comparing this species with holotypes and additional material of Pamphobeteus species, allowed us to recognize it as new, and to describe it here as Pamphobeteus verdolaga sp. nov. The male of P. verdolaga sp. nov. is distinguished by the palpal bulb with broad embolus, poorly developed apical keel (A), prolateral inferior keel (PI) and prolateral accessory keel (PAc) present but poorly developed, and retrolateral keel (R) of similar length as A. Females are distinguished by the morphology of spermatheca with a wide base and very short oval seminal receptacles, which are curved toward the center. This is the thirteenth species described in Pamphobeteus and the sixth species reported from Colombia. The species description is complemented by a molecular characterization of a partial CO1 sequence.

Tradicionalmente, las recesiones han venido acompañadas de disrupciones importantes en el funcionamiento del sistema financiero. Paradójicamente, antes de la crisis financiera de 2007-2009 se daba muy poca importancia a la interdependencia entre la macroeconomia y el sistema financiero. En este documento estudiamos la relación entre ciclos financieros y ciclos de producto para una muestra de treinta y tres países. Especificamente, caracterizamos la interdependencia entre estos ciclos y realizamos pruebas de causalidad tipo Granger en el dominio de la frecuencia. Nuestros resultados principales indican que la mayor interdependencia ocurre en frecuencias asociables al mediano y largo plazo. Encontramos evidencia de causalidad bi-direccional.

The history of economic recessions has shown that every deep downturn has been accompanied by disruptions in the financial sector. Paradoxically, up until the financial world crisis of 2007-2009, little attention was given to macroeconomic and financial interdependence. In this paper, a study is conducted on the relationship between financial and real business cycles for a sample of thirty-three countries in the frequency domain. Specifically, the features of the interdependence of credit and output cycles are analysed and Granger-type causality tests are carried out in the frequency domain. The main findings of the study indicate that the likelihood of cycle interdependence is highest when considering medium and long-term frequencies, and that Granger causality runs in both directions.

Se analiza, para el caso colombiano, el impacto de la política monetaria en la tasa de cambio y otras variables macroeconómicas. Se imponen restricciones de exogeneidad en bloque de una forma novedosa en un VAR estructural que contiene variables tanto locales como extranjeras. Los resultados son robustos a diferentes especificaciones y muestran evidencia en favor de la paridad no cubierta de intereses, lo cual no es el caso para investigaciones previas en Colombia. También se encuentra evidencia que el banco central lleva a cabo políticas monetarias contracíclicas y que no hay pass through de la tasa de cambio a la inflación.

The impact of the monetary policy on the exchange rate and other macroeconomic variables is analyzed for the case of Colombia, a small open economy. Block exogeneity restrictions are imposed in a novel way in a structural VAR, including local and foreign variables. The results are robust to various specifications and show a partial solution of the forward discount bias puzzle, i.e. partial evidence of the uncovered interest parity (UIP). This was not the case in previous research with the same methodology for Colombia. It also finds strong evidence in favor of the central bank leaning against the wind and partial evidence of no pass through from exchange rate to inflation.
