Abstract The objective of this work was to develop a chemical admixture to make concrete capable to heal its fissures autonomously and, consequently, mitigate the concrete’s reinforcement corrosion due to the ingress of aggressive agents. For that, polymeric microcapsules built by a shell of urea-formaldehyde-melamine (UFM) and a core of methylmethacrylate were developed and added to the concrete to further evaluation. The concrete specimens containing 0%, 3% and 6% of the proposed microcapsules (mass of microcapsules / mass of cement) were subjected to destructive and non-destructive tests. The water absorption and the mechanical tests i.e., compressive strength and indirect tensile strength (Brazilian test) were carried out to characterize concrete, while the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and the non-destructive ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) tests were conducted to evaluate the concrete self-healing ability. These tests showed that the proposed admixture was able to heal the concrete’s fissures partially. In addition, it was concluded that the samples with 3% of microcapsules presented higher self-repairing rates. Despite the microcapsules developed in this work have presented a satisfactory self-healing efficiency, their effectiveness looks to be affected by the mixing procedure once part of them is broken during the process.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver um aditivo químico capaz de tornar o concreto auto reparável e, consequentemente, mitigar a corrosão da armadura em seu interior devido à entrada de agentes agressivos. Para isso, microcápsulas poliméricas compostas por uma casca de uréia-formaldeído-melamina (UFM) e um núcleo de metilmetacrilato foram desenvolvidas e adicionadas ao concreto para posterior avaliação. Os corpos de prova de concreto contendo 0%, 3% e 6% das microcápsulas propostas (massa de microcápsulas / massa de cimento) foram submetidos a ensaios destrutivos e não destrutivos. O ensaio de absorção de água e os mecânicos, ou seja, resistência à compressão e resistência à tração indireta (teste brasileiro) foram realizados para caracterizar o concreto, enquanto a espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica (EIS) e os ensaios não destrutivos de velocidade de pulso ultrassônico (UPV) foram conduzidos para investigar a ocorrência de autorreparação. Esses testes mostraram que o aditivo proposto foi capaz de cicatrizar as fissuras do concreto parcialmente. Além disso, analisando os dados coletados com o programa de testes, concluiu-se que as amostras com 3% de microcápsulas apresentaram maiores taxas de autorreparação. Apesar das microcápsulas desenvolvidas neste trabalho terem apresentado uma eficiência de autorreparação satisfatória, sua eficácia parece ser afetada pelo procedimento de mistura, uma vez que parte delas é quebrada durante o processo.

O declínio global das coberturas vacinais levou a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS), em 2019, a definir a hesitação vacinal como uma das dez maiores ameaças mundiais à saúde pública. No Brasil, a queda da cobertura vacinal teve início em 2012, acentuando-se a partir de 2016, e sendo agravada pela pandemia de COVID-19. O alerta da baixa cobertura vacinal vem acompanhado pela reintrodução de doenças imunopreveníveis como o sarampo. O retorno de doenças até então eliminadas, como a poliomielite, pode agravar a crise sanitária ainda em curso. Mesmo sendo reconhecido como um dos mais efetivos programas de imunizações do mundo e dos esforços permanentes, o Programa Nacional de Imunizações enfrenta um cenário extremamente adverso no que tange às coberturas vacinais. Este artigo descreve o Projeto pela Reconquista das Altas Coberturas Vacinais (PRCV) e a estratégia de trabalhar na ponta do sistema, executada nos territórios, que vem sendo implementada desde 2021 e já começa a apresentar resultados promissores. O PRCV foi organizado em três eixos temáticos com atuação compartilhada e ações específicas, a saber: vacinação; sistemas de informação; comunicação e educação. Os resultados já alcançados permitem afirmar que é possível conseguir a reversão das baixas coberturas vacinais, a partir da articulação de ações estruturais e interinstitucionais, com o fortalecimento das políticas públicas e desenvolvimento de medidas de curto, médio e longo prazos. Os fatores mais potentes do PRCV são sua abordagem junto aos profissionais da ponta, o pacto social pela vacinação, e a estruturação de redes locais de apoio às imunizações.

La disminución global de las coberturas de vacunación llevó a la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), en 2019, a definir la vacilación de la vacunación como una de las diez mayores amenazas para la salud pública en el mundo. En Brasil, la caída de la cobertura de vacunación comenzó en 2012, se acentuó a partir de 2016 y se vio agravada por la pandemia de COVID-19. La alerta de baja cobertura vacunal va acompañada de la reintroducción de enfermedades prevenibles por vacunación como el sarampión. El regreso de enfermedades hasta ahora eliminadas, como la poliomielitis, puede agravar la crisis sanitaria aún en curso. A pesar de ser reconocido como uno de los programas de inmunización más efectivos del mundo y de los esfuerzos permanentes, el Programa Nacional de Inmunización enfrenta un escenario extremadamente adverso en lo que se refiere a las coberturas vacunales. Este artículo describe el Proyecto por la Reconquista de las Altas Coberturas Vacunales (PRCV) y la estrategia de trabajo al final del sistema, ejecutada en los territorios, que se implementa desde 2021 y ya comienza a mostrar resultados prometedores. El PRCV fue organizado en tres ejes temáticos con actuación compartida y acciones específicas, a saber: vacunación; sistemas de Información; comunicación y educación. Los resultados ya alcanzados permiten afirmar que es posible lograr la reversión de las bajas coberturas vacunales, a partir de la articulación de acciones estructurales e interinstitucionales, con el fortalecimiento de las políticas públicas y desarrollo de medidas de corto, mediano y largo plazo. Los factores más potentes del PRCV son su abordaje junto a los profesionales de la punta, el pacto social por la vacunación, y la estructuración de redes locales de apoyo a las inmunizaciones.

The global decline in vaccine coverage led the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019 to define vaccine hesitation as one of the world’s top ten threats to public health. In Brazil, the drop in vaccination coverage began in 2012, increasing from 2016, and was aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The warning of low vaccination coverage is accompanied by the reintroduction of immunopreventable diseases such as measles. The return of diseases so far eradicated, such as polio, can aggravate the ongoing health crisis. Despite the Brazilian National Immunization Program being recognized as one of the most effective worldwide and its continuous efforts, it is facing an extremely challenging scenario regarding immunization coverage. This article describes the Project for the Regaining of the High Vaccination Coverage (PRCV) and the strategy of working at the frontline, conducted in the local level, which has been implemented since 2021 and is already starting to show promising results. The PRCV was organized in three thematic axes with shared and specific actions, including: vaccination; information systems; communication and education. The outcomes achieved allow us to affirm that it is possible to reverse the low vaccination coverage, based on the articulation of structural and interinstitutional actions, with the strengthening of public policies and development of short-, medium-, and long-term measures. The most powerful factors of the PRCV are its approach to frontline professionals, the social pact for vaccination, and the establishment of local support networks for vaccinations.

Introducción. Se trata de analizar el impacto de una secuencia formativa en la autopercepción del alumnado sobre las habilidades comunicativas. Secundariamente, se pretende conocer el grado de satisfacción del alumnado en relación con las actividades propuestas. Métodos. Es un estudio cuasi experimental realizado sobre cuatro de los subgrupos de prácticas de la asignatura obligatoria de cuarto curso Cirugía Bucal Clínica e Implantología. Dos de los subgrupos recibieron una secuencia formativa específica para la mejora de sus habilidades comunicativas (n = 40) y los otros dos actuaron como controles (n = 47). Al inicio y al final del estudio, los participantes respondieron el cuestionario validado SE-12 de autopercepción sobre comunicación odontólogo-paciente. La estrategia evaluativa fue continua y formativa. Se analizaron y compararon las puntuaciones de los distintos indicadores e instrumentos de evaluación empleados. Resultados. A excepción de un alumno del grupo de control, todos los estudiantes participaron de forma activa en el proyecto. En ambos grupos se observó una mejora estadísticamente significativa en la percepción de las habilidades comunicativas (p < 0,001). No obstante, los alumnos asignados al grupo experimental percibieron una mejora significativamente mayor (diferencia de medias = 0,96 puntos; intervalo de confianza al 95% = 0,66-1,27; p < 0,001). Los alumnos valoraron la secuencia con un 8,56 (desviación estándar = 1,14). Conclusiones. La implementación de la secuencia formativa produjo una mejora en la percepción que tienen los estudiantes sobre sus habilidades comunicativas. Es necesaria la inclusión de programas longitudinales de formación en comunicación en los planes de estudio para acreditar la consecución de las competencias comunicativas.

Introduction. To analyze the impact of a training-learning sequence on students' self-perception of communication skills. Secondarily, to know the degree of student satisfaction in relation to the proposed activities. Methods. A quasi-experimental study was carried out on four of the clinical practice subgroups of Clinical Oral Surgery and Implantology (fourth year of study). Two of the subgroups received a specific training-learning sequence to improve their communication skills (n = 40) and the other two served as controls (n = 47). At the beginning and end of the study, the participants answered the validated SE-12 self-perception questionnaire on dentist-patient communication. The evaluation strategy was continuous and formative. The scores of the different indicators and evaluation instruments used were analyzed and compared. Results. Except for one student in the control group, all students participated actively in the project. In both groups, a statistically significant improvement was observed in the perception of communication skills (p < 0.001). However, the students assigned to the experimental group perceived a significantly greater improvement (difference in means = 0.96 points; 95% confidence interval = 0.66-1.27; p < 0.001). The students valued the training-learning sequence with an 8.56 (standard deviation = 1.14). Conclusions. The implementation of the training-learning sequence produced an improvement in the perception that students have about their communication skills. It is necessary to include longitudinal training programs in communication in the curricula to prove the achievement of communication skills competences.

Abstract The genus Conus includes over 900 species of marine invertebrates known as cone snails, whose venoms are among the most powerful described so far. This potency is mainly due to the concerted action of hundreds of small bioactive peptides named conopeptides, which target different ion channels and membrane receptors and thus interfere with crucial physiological processes. By swiftly harpooning and injecting their prey and predators with such deadly cocktails, the slow-moving cone snails guarantee their survival in the harsh, competitive marine environment. Each cone snail species produces a unique venom, as the mature sequences of conopeptides from the venoms of different species share very little identity. This biochemical diversity, added to the numerous species and conopeptides contained in their venoms, results in an immense biotechnological and therapeutic potential, still largely unexplored. That is especially true regarding the bioprospection of the venoms of cone snail species found off the Brazilian coast - a region widely known for its biodiversity. Of the 31 species described in this region so far, only four - Conus cancellatus, Conus regius, Conus villepinii, and Conus ermineus - have had their venoms partially characterized, and, although many bioactive molecules have been identified, only a few have been actually isolated and studied. In addition to providing an overview on all the cone snail species found off the Brazilian coast to date, this review compiles the information on the structural and pharmacological features of conopeptides and other molecules identified in the venoms of the four aforementioned species, paving the way for future studies.

Abstract Ticks parasitizing 102 wild animals in the states of Mato Grosso and Goiás, Brazil were collected between 2015 and 2018. A total of 2338 ticks (865 males, 541 females, 823 nymphs, and 109 larvae) belonging to four genera (Amblyomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis, and Rhipicephalus) and at least 21 species were identified. DNA extraction and a molecular survey for rickettsial agents were performed on 650 ticks. The results revealed parasitism by the following species: Rickettsia amblyommatis in Amblyomma cajennense s.s., A. cajennense s.l., Amblyomma coelebs, Amblyomma humerale, Amblyomma longirostre, Amblyomma nodosum, Amblyomma scalpturatum, Amblyomma sculptum, and Amblyomma romitii; Rickettsia parkeri in Amblyomma nodosum, Amblyomma ovale, Amblyomma scalpturatum, and Amblyomma triste; Rickettsia rhipicephali in Haemaphysalis juxtakochi; Rickettsia sp. in A. cajennense s.s., A. nodosum, and A. sculptum, and lastly, ‘Candidatus Rickettsia andeanae’ in Amblyomma parvum and Rhipicephalus microplus. This study expands the body of knowledge about tick parasitism among wild animals, including new data concerning tick-host associations, and provides information about the epidemiology of tick-borne pathogens in the Center-West region of Brazil.

Resumo Foram coletados carrapatos parasitando 102 animais silvestres nos estados de Mato Grosso e Goiás, Brasil, entre 2015 e 2018. Um total de 2338 carrapatos (865 machos, 541 fêmeas, 823 ninfas e 109 larvas) pertencentes a quatro gêneros (Amblyomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis e Rhipicephalus) e pelo menos 21 espécies foram identificadas. A extração de DNA e pesquisa molecular para agentes riquétsiais foram realizadas em 650 carrapatos. Os resultados revelaram parasitismo pelas seguintes espécies: Rickettsia amblyommatis em Amblyomma cajennense s.s., A. cajennense s.l., Amblyomma coelebs, Amblyomma humerale, Amblyomma longirostre, Amblyomma nodosum, Amblyomma scalpturatum, Amblyomma sculptum e Amblyomma romitii; Rickettsia parkeri em Amblyomma nodosum, Amblyomma ovale, Amblyomma scalpturatum e Amblyomma triste; Rickettsia rhipicephali em Haemaphysalis juxtakochi; Rickettsia sp. em A. cajennense s.s., A. nodosum e A. sculptum e, por último, ‘Candidatus Rickettsia andeanae’ em Amblyomma parvum e Rhipicephalus microplus. Este estudo amplia o conhecimento sobre o parasitismo de carrapatos em animais silvestres, incluindo-se novos dados sobre associações carrapato-hospedeiro. Fornece, ainda, informações sobre a epidemiologia de patógenos transmitidos por carrapatos na região Centro-Oeste do Brasil.

Abstract It is repeatedly stressed the need to characterize the extant biodiversity in tropical ecosystems. However, inventory studies are still progressing slowly in dry ecosystems, leading to the underestimation of their true biodiversity and hindering conservation efforts. In this study, we present primary and secondary data, along with an updated list of amphibians and reptiles from two localities in the São Francisco-Gurguéia region in Piauí. Additionally, we compare the species composition between nine areas within the Caatinga, which were sampled using standardized methods over the past ten years, to examine broader spatial patterns of community composition. To survey reptiles and amphibians, we employed similar methods and sampling efforts in two areas within the Serra das Confusões National Park (SCNP) region. Our surveys recorded a total of 73 species of amphibians and reptiles, of which 24 are new distribution records for the SCNP region. Consequently, our findings increase the known herpetofauna in the region to 94 species. Despite their proximity, the two sites in the SCNP region exhibited only 42% similarity in species composition, and they differed significantly from other areas within the Caatinga. Furthermore, even the closer Caatinga areas presented differences in species composition, highlighting the necessity to evaluate biodiversity across the landscape and contribute to understanding biogeographic patterns.

Resumo É repetidamente enfatizada a necessidade de caracterizar a biodiversidade vivente em ecossistemas tropicais. No entanto, os estudos de inventário ainda estão progredindo lentamente em ecossistemas secos, levando à subestimação de sua verdadeira biodiversidade e dificultando os esforços de conservação. Neste estudo, apresentamos dados primários e secundários, juntamente com uma lista atualizada de anfíbios e répteis de duas localidades na região de São Francisco-Gurguéia, do Piauí. Além disso, comparamos a composição de espécies entre nove áreas dentro da Caatinga, que foram amostradas usando métodos padronizados nos últimos dez anos, para examinar padrões espaciais mais amplos de composição da comunidade. Para estudar répteis e anfíbios, utilizamos métodos e esforços de amostragem semelhantes em duas áreas na região do Parque Nacional da Serra das Confusões (PNSC). Nossos levantamentos registraram um total de 73 espécies de anfíbios e répteis, das quais 24 são novos registros de distribuição para a região do PNSC. Consequentemente, nossos resultados aumentam a herpetofauna conhecida na região para 94 espécies. Apesar da proximidade, os dois locais na região do PNSC exibiram apenas 42% de similaridade na composição de espécies e diferiram significativamente de outras áreas dentro da Caatinga. Mesmo áreas mais próximas da Caatinga apresentaram diferenças na composição de espécies, destacando a necessidade de avaliar a biodiversidade em toda a paisagem e contribuir para a compreensão de padrões biogeográficos.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Nocardiosis is a rare bacterial infection caused by Nocardia spp. However, an increasing incidence has been described whereby data about epidemiology and prognosis are essential. Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted among patients with positive Nocardia spp. culture, from January 2019 to January 2023, at a Terciary Hospital in Portugal. Results: Nocardiosis was considered in 18 cases with a median age of 63.8-years-old. At least one immunosuppressive cause was identified in 70% of patients. Five patients had Disseminated Nocardiosis (DN). The lung was the most common site of clinical disease (77.8%) and Nocardia was most commonly identified in respiratory tract samples. The most frequently isolated species were Nocardia nova/africana (n = 7) followed by Nocardia cyriacigeorgica (n = 3) and Nocardia pseudobrasiliensis (n = 3). The majority of the patients (94.4%) received antibiotic therapy, of whom as many as 55.6% were treated with monotherapy. The most frequently prescribed antibiotic was trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Selected antimicrobial agents were generally effective, with linezolid and cotrimoxazole (100% Susceptibility [S]) and amikacin (94% S) having the most activity against Nocardia species. The median (IQR) duration of treatment was 24.2 (1–51.4) weeks for DN; The overall one-year case fatality was 33.3% (n = 6) and was higher in the DN (66.7%). No recurrence was observed. Conclusion: Nocardiosis is an emerging infectious disease with a poor prognosis, particularly in DN. This review offers essential epidemiological insights and underscores the importance of gaining a better understanding of the microbiology of nocardiosis. Such knowledge can lead to the optimization of antimicrobial therapy and, when necessary, guide appropriate surgical interventions to prevent unfavorable outcomes.

Abstract The Santos Basin (SB) is the main petroliferous basin in the Brazilian continental margin and one of the most studied marine areas in Brazil. However, historical data suggest that new efforts should be carried out to acquire quantitative biological data, especially in the deep sea, to establish the baseline of essential ocean variables in different ecosystems for future monitoring programs. The Brazilian energy company Petrobras planned and executed 24 oceanographic cruises over a period of 2 years to assess the benthic (SANSED cruise) and pelagic (SANAGU cruise) systems of the SB (356 days at sea in 2019 and 2021/2022). These efforts were part of the Santos Project, which comprised a comprehensive environmental study aimed at investigating benthic and pelagic variables to characterize ecology, biogeochemistry, thermohaline properties of water masses, and ocean circulation patterns, geomorphology, and sedimentology, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Here we present the detailed sampling designs and the field methods employed on board, during the SB scientific cruises. All sampling protocols were based on standardized approaches. For the benthos analyses, triplicate sediment samples were performed using a GOMEX-type box corer (0.25 m²) or a large modified Van Veen grab (0.75 m²) at 100 stations ranging from 25 to 2400 m depth. At each station, 25 geochemical and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed in addition to micro-, meio-, and macrofauna and living foraminifera samples. For the pelagic system, 60 stations were selected to investigate the plankton community, ranging in size from pico- to macroplankton, through vertical, horizontal, and oblique net hauls (20, 200, and 500 μm mesh size), as well as 25 biogeochemical parameters collected with an aid of a CTD-rosette sampler. Part of this scientific information also serves the Regional Environmental Characterization Project (PCR-BS) in support of Petrobras’ Santos Basin drilling licensing process led by the Brazilian Environmental Agency – IBAMA. This project contributes to the sustainable development of the SB, in line with the guidelines of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

Abstract The Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery has set up a committee to provide new evidence-based recommendations for patient care associated with chronic venous insufficiency. Topics were divided in five groups: 1. Classification, 2. Diagnosis, 3. Conservative or non-invasive treatment, 4. Invasive treatment and 5. Treatment of small vessels. This last series is closely related to the activities of Brazilian angiologists and vascular surgeons, who are heavily involved in the treatment of small superficial veins. These guidelines are intended to assist in clinical decision-making for attending physicians and health managers. The decision to follow a guideline recommendation should be made by the responsible physician on a case-by-case basis taking into account the patient's specific condition, as well as local resources, regulations, laws, and clinical practice recommendations.

Resumo A Sociedade Brasileira de Angiologia e de Cirurgia Vascular organizou uma comissão para fornecer novas recomendações baseadas em evidências sobre questões críticas de atendimento ao paciente com insuficiência venosa crônica. São abordados aqui os temas de classificação, diagnóstico, tratamento conservador, tratamento invasivo e tratamento de pequenos vasos. Esta última série está muito relacionada à atividade de angiologistas e cirurgiões vasculares, que possuem forte atuação no tratamento de pequenas veias superficiais. Estas diretrizes destinam-se a auxiliar na tomada de decisões clínicas de médicos assistentes e gestores de saúde. A decisão de seguir uma recomendação de diretriz deve ser feita pelo médico responsável caso a caso, levando em consideração a condição específica do paciente, bem como recursos locais, regulamentos, leis e recomendações de prática clínica.

Resumo A aplicação de condicionadores ao solo visa o reforço da estabilidade da agregação (EA) e da sua resistência à erosão. O bagaço de azeitona (BA) húmido, proveniente da produção de azeite em duas fases, pode ser utilizado na compostagem e obtenção de condicionadores orgânicos (CBA). O trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar resultados de ensaio experimental realizado para avaliar a influência de CBA na EA. O ensaio comportou dois solos de potencialmente distinto grau de agregação (1, franco-limoso; 2, franco-argiloso), nos quais se aplicaram três CBA, em três doses. Amostras de agregados (1-2 mm) foram misturadas com condicionador moído (<0,75 mm), submetidas a ciclos diários de humedecimento e secagem, e coletadas em 5 momentos ao longo do período experimental de 30 dias. A EA foi determinada por agitação e crivagem em húmido. Confirmou-se a hipótese de o solo 2 possuir EA significativamente superior à do solo 1. Neste, a adição dos condicionadores aumentou significativamente a proporção de agregados estáveis relativamente ao solo original, em todas as dosagens, o que não se verificou no solo 2. A incorporação de CBA em solos cultivados com olival, contribuindo para a economia circular, melhora a proteção do solo pelo incremento de agregados estáveis.

Abstract The application of soil conditioners aims to reinforce aggregate stability (AS) and soil resistance to erosion. The wet olive pomace (OP), from olive oil production in two phases, can be used in composting and obtaining organic conditioners (OPC). The objective of this work is to present the results of an experiment carried out to evaluate the influence of OPC on AS. The experiment involved two soils of potentially different degrees of aggregation (1, silt loam; 2, clay loam), in which three OPC were applied, in three doses. Aggregate samples (1-2 mm) were mixed with conditioner (<0.75 mm), subjected to daily cycles of wetting and drying, and collected at 5 moments along the 30-day experimental period. AS was determined by shaking and wet sieving. The hypothesis that soil 2 has a significantly higher AS than soil 1 was confirmed. In this, the addition of conditioners significantly increased the proportion of stable aggregates as compared to the original soil, at all dosages, which was not observed in soil 2. The incorporation of OPC in soils cultivated with olive groves, contributing to the circular economy, improves soil protection by increasing stable aggregates.

Resumo O bagaço de azeitona (BA) é um subproduto húmido gerado na produção de azeite, com alta carga orgânica, e elevada toxicidade devido à sua composição em polifenóis. A sua produção pode, assim, constituir um problema ambiental para os países produtores de azeite, como Portugal. A compostagem poderá ser uma forma de valorizar este subproduto, sendo os microrganismos os principais agentes deste processo de degradação aeróbica. O objetivo do presente estudo foi estudar a evolução da comunidade bacteriana ao longo do processo de compostagem de BA e isolar e identificar bactérias com a finalidade de explorá-las no futuro como inóculos de compostagem. A compostagem foi realizada em quatro pilhas de escala industrial com diferentes proporções de BA, fonte de azoto, agente estruturante e reviramentos. Amostras compósitas foram coletadas nas pilhas em três momentos: fase inicial, fase mesófila e fase termófila. Os isolados bacterianos, obtidos através de diluições seriadas, foram identificados por sequenciação da região 16S do rRNA. Os resultados de composição e diversidade, mostraram diferenças significativas entre as fases de compostagem e entre pilhas, sugerindo uma mudança contínua de espécies bacterianas ao longo das diferentes fases do processo de compostagem do BA.

Abstract Olive pomace (OP) is a wet by-product generated in olive oil production, with a high organic load, and high toxicity due to its polyphenol composition. Its production can therefore be an environmental problem for olive oil-producing countries, such as Portugal. Composting may be a way to valorise this by-product, and the microorganisms are the main agents of this aerobic degradation process. The aim of the present study was to study the evolution of the bacterial community along the OP composting process and to isolate and identify bacteria with the purpose of exploring them in the future as composting inoculums. Composting was carried out in four industrial-scale piles with different proportions of OP, nitrogen source, structuring agent, and turnings. Compost samples were collected from the piles at three-time points: initial phase, mesophilic phase, and thermophilic phase. The bacterial isolates, obtained through serial dilutions, were identified by sequencing the 16S rRNA region. The results of composition and diversity, showed significant differences among the composting phases and among piles, suggesting a continuous change of bacterial species throughout the different phases of the OP composting process.

Resumo Foram avaliados quatro tratamentos de compostagem aeróbica com diferentes matérias primas (BA: bagaço de azeitona, ES: estrume, CA: casca de amendôa) durante 176 d: pilha A com 44% BA, 25% ES, 25% CA e revolvimento; pilha B com 44% BA, 11% ES, 44% CA e revolvimento; pilha C com 25% BA, 50% ES, 25% CA e revolvimento; pilha D com 44% BA, 11% ES, 44% CA e sem revolvimento, de modo a testar os três fatores limitantes do BA: alta relação C/N, elevada humidade e teor de polifenóis. As variáveis analisadas nas pilhas, quinzenalmente, foram (n=160): densidade, humidade, fração grosseira, pH, condutividade elétrica (CE), matéria orgânica (MO), cinzas e cor; a análise elementar CHNO foi determinada por análise química elementar e a fitotoxicidade conforme o índice de Munoo-Liisa (MLV). Os resultados do diagrama de Van Krevelen (H/C vs O/C) mostram uma ligeira deshidrogenação nos primeiros 98 d, seguida por uma degradação seletiva de hidratos de carbono e um aumento da aromatização após 120 d. A análise de componentes principais (ACP) mostrou que a maior variabilidade é explicada pela qualidade da MO (83%), onde o teor de C (C/N alta) diminui conforme aumenta a disponibilidade de N e o pH. Por outro lado, verifico-se que a MLV é explicada (52%) pela alifaticidade dos constituintes orgânicos no composto (H/C alta).

Abstract Four treatments of aerobic composting with different raw materials (BA: olive pomace, ES: manure, CA: almond husk) were evaluated during 176 days: pile A with 44%BA, 25%ES, 25%CA and turning; pile B with 44%BA, 11%ES, 44%CA and turning; C pile with 25%BA, 50% ES, 25%CA and turning; D pile with 44%BA, 11%ES, 44%CA and without turning over, in order to test the three limiting factors of BA: high C/N ratio, humidity and content of polyphenols. The routine variables analyzed bi-weekly were (n=160): density, humidity, coarse fraction, pH, electric conductivity (EC), organic matter (OM), ash and color; CHNO was determined by chemical elemental analysis and the phytotoxicity according to the Munoo-Liisa index (MLV). Van Krevelen diagram´s results (H/C vs O/C) show a slight dehydrogenation in the first 98 d, followed by a selective degradation of carbohydrates and an increase in the aromatization of the compounds after 120d. The principal component analises (PCA) showed that the greatest variability is explained by the OM quality axis (83%), where the C content (high C/N) decreases as the N availability and pH increases, on the other hand, the MLV was explained (52 %) by the aliphaticity of the organic constituents in the compost (high H/C).

Abstract Introduction Perinatal hypothyroidism has a negative repercussion on the development and maturation of auditory system function. However, its long-term effect on auditory function remains unsettled. Objective To evaluate the effect of prenatal hypothyroidism on the auditory function of adult offspring in rats. Methods Pregnant Wistar rats were given the antithyroid drug methimazole (0.02%-1-methylimidazole-2-thiol– MMI) in drinking water, ad libitum, from gestational day (GD) 9 to postnatal day 15 (PND15). Anesthetized offspring from MMI-treated dams (OMTD) and control rats were evaluated by tympanometry, distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE), and auditory brainstem response (ABR) at PNDs 30, 60, 90, and 120. Results Our data demonstrated no middle ear dysfunction, with the OMTD compliance lower than that of the control group. The DPOAE revealed the absence of outer hair cells function, and the ABR showed normal integrity of neural auditory pathways up to brainstem level in the central nervous system. Furthermore, in the OMTD group, hearing loss was characterized by a higher electrophysiological threshold. Conclusion Our data suggest that perinatal hypothyroidism leads to irreversible damage to cochlear function in offspring.

ABSTRACT Purpose: This study aims to investigate effects of education for sustainable development (ESD) on university students’ personal norms regarding the scarcity of drinking water in light of the value-belief-norm theory (VBN). Design/methodology/approach: The empirical research was developed at the Federal University of Bahia. The final sample was composed of 1,096 university students. The questionnaire was validated qualitatively and quantitatively. For hypothesis testing, Structural Equation Modeling was employed. Findings: Results indicated that the level of education for sustainable development positively impacted only biospheric values. The findings demonstrate that the impact of education for sustainable development depends on its quality, quantity, distribution, and diffusion in curricula. Research implications: This research is based on VBN theory and contributes to the body of literature of EDS. It suggests that individuals’ values are in fact guiding principles of their beliefs. Practical implications: Biospheric values were found to have a positive effect on ecological beliefs. Nevertheless, it was found that in order to feel a moral obligation to act, students need to believe that, in fact, drinking water scarcity is a serious problem for society. Social implications: This research adds insights to the matter of educating the younger generation of students in view of the recent (2021-2022) water crisis in Brazil. Originality/value: The analysis of effects of “level of education for sustainable development” on individuals’ values, impacting the VBN chain to explain student coping with drinking water scarcity is an original contribution of this study.

RESUMO Objetivo: Investigar os efeitos da educação para o desenvolvimento sustentável (EDS) nas normas pessoais dos estudantes universitários quanto à escassez de água potável à luz da teoria da crença-norma de valor (VBN). Design/metodologia/abordagem: A pesquisa empírica foi desenvolvida na Universidade Federal da Bahia. A amostra final foi composta por 1.096 universitários. O questionário foi validado qualitativamente e quantitativamente. Para o teste de hipóteses, foi utilizada a Modelagem de equações estruturais. Resultados: O nível de EDS impactou positivamente apenas os valores biosféricos. Os achados demonstram que o impacto da EDS depende de sua qualidade, quantidade, distribuição e difusão nos currículos. Implicações para pesquisa: Esta pesquisa está baseada na Teoria VBN e contribui para a literatura sobre EDS. Sugere ainda que valores dos indivíduos são, de fato, princípios norteadores de suas crenças. Implicações práticas: Valores biosféricos tiveram um efeito positivo sobre as crenças ecológicas. No entanto, verificou-se que, para sentir a obrigação moral de agir, os alunos precisam acreditar que, de fato, a escassez de água potável é um problema sério para a sociedade. Implicações sociais: Esta pesquisa agrega insights à questão de educar a geração mais jovem de estudantes, tendo em vista a recente crise hídrica (2021-2022) no Brasil. Originalidade/valor: A análise dos efeitos do “nível de EDS” nos valores individuais impactando a cadeia VBN para explicar o enfrentamento do aluno à escassez de água potável é uma contribuição original deste estudo.
