Abstract Sharks are among the marine organisms most impacted by intense fisheries, a worrying fact since they are key components in the trophic structure of ecosystems. In this context, fish landing data can help managers in shark conservation. This study characterized the landings of Carcharhinus acronotus, Mustelus cf. canis, and Sphyrna mokarran in the Mucuripe Embayment, Ceará, Brazil, along three study periods (1998–1999, 2006–2008, and 2015–2016). A total of 223 specimens were recorded from 227 site visits. Carcharhinus acronotus specimens measured from 50 to 139 cm in total length (TL), with a 1.3:1 sex ratio in favor of males. Most of the specimens recorded were adults (55.1% of males and 62.9% of females). Mustelus cf. canis varied from 64 to 133 cm in TL, with a sex ratio in favor of females (3.1:1). Most of the specimens recorded were adults (50% of males and 68% of females). Sphyrna mokarran specimens varied from 116 to 380 cm in TL, with a sex ratio of 7:1 in favor of males. Most of the specimens recorded were juveniles. This is the first fishery-dependent study to provide information on size and sex composition of these species for most of the southwestern equatorial Atlantic.

Resumo Os tubarões estão entre os organismos marinhos mais impactados pela pesca intensa, fato preocupante uma vez que são componentes fundamentais na estrutura trófica dos ecossistemas. Nesse contexto, dados de desembarques pesqueiros podem auxiliar gestores na conservação dos tubarões. Este estudo caracterizou os desembarques de Carcharhinus acronotus, Mustelus cf. canis e Sphyrna mokarran na enseada do Mucuripe, Ceará, Brasil, ao longo de três períodos de estudo (1998–1999, 2006–2008 e 2015–2016). Um total de 223 espécimes foi registrado em 227 visitas ao local. Espécimes de Carcharhinus acronotus mediram de 50 a 139 cm de comprimento total (CT), com razão sexual de 1,3:1 a favor dos machos. A maioria dos espécimes registrados era adulta (55,1% dos machos e 62,9% das fêmeas). Mustelus cf. canis variou de 64 a 133 cm em CT, com razão sexual a favor das fêmeas (3,1:1). A maioria dos espécimes registrados era adulta (50% dos machos e 68% das fêmeas). Espécimes de Sphyrna mokarran variaram de 116 a 380 cm em CT, com razão sexual de 7:1 a favor dos machos. A maioria dos espécimes registrados era juvenil. Este é o primeiro estudo dependente da pesca a fornecer informações sobre tamanho e composição sexual dessas espécies para a maior parte do sudoeste do Atlântico Equatorial.

Abstract A Short-finned Pilot Whale, Globicephala macrorhynchus, was found dead and with shark bites along its body on a beach in northeast Brazil. The present study aimed to identify the shark species responsible for the bites as well as to estimate its/their total length. Species identification was performed using the bite marks, which were of the same diameter, suggesting they were infected by one or more Tiger sharks of similar size. The characteristics of the bites and the shape and distribution of the marks left by the teeth pointed to the Tiger Shark, Galeocerdo cuvier. The total length of the Tiger Shark or sharks was estimated at between 257 and 288 cm, based on the perimeter contour of each bite and the interdental distance inferred from the marks on the whale. This suggests that the bites were inflicted by one or more sub-adult specimens.

O mercúrio (Hg) é o único metal que comprovadamente biomagnifica através da cadeia alimentar, e sendo assim, espécies de peixes predadores tendem a apresentar altas concentrações deste metal. Porções de tecido muscular de C. signatus coletados na região oeste equatorial do oceano Atlântico foram submetidas a extração ácida e tiveram a concentração de mercúrio determinada com acessório gerador de vapor a frio acoplado a um ICP-AES. A concentração média de Hg apresentou valores acima do limite máximo permissível para consumo humano estabelecido pela legislação brasileira (1000 µg.kg-1 de peso úmido). Conseqüentemente, um consumo médio de 0,1 kg.dia-1 de C. signatus resultaria numa ingestão media de 174,2 µg de Hg, mais de cinco vezes o consumo máximo de 30 µg.dia-1 estabelecido pela Organizacao Munidal da Saúde. Dentro das classes de tamanho analisadas, o comprimento total não pode ser utilizado como indicador do grau de contaminação por mercúrio em C. signatus. Ainda, o sexo não pode ser considerado um fator determinante na acumulação total de mercúrio em C. signatus.

Mercury is the only element capable to biomagnificate along the food chain, and carnivorous fish tend to accumulate high concentrations of this element. Total mercury in muscle tissue of Carcharhinus signatus sampled along the western equatorial Atlantic Ocean was measured by atomic emission spectrophotometry with ICP/AES. The average total mercury concentrations were consistently greater than the maximum limit for human consumption established by the Brazilian Health Ministry for carnivorous fishes (1000 µg. kg-1 w.w.). Therefore, an average consumption of 0.1 kg/day of C. signatus would result in an average daily ingestion of 174.2 µg of Hg, more than five times the 30 µg/day intake established by the World Health Organization. In the range of lengths studied, body length could not be used as an indicator of the Hg contamination degree for C. signatus. Also, sex cannot be considered a determining factor in the total mercury accumulation in C. signatus.

Artificial reefs have become an important and popular resource enhancement technique by concentrating fishes and by increasing natural production of biological resources. In order to increase the necto-benthic colonization potencial, an artificial reef was installed on the northern coast of Rio de Janeiro (21º27'S, 41ºOO'W), an area with typically low relief bottom. Measuring nearly 1500 m², the reef consisted of four sets of different materials randomly disposed: concrete pipes (N = 12); tires structures (N = 20); and cement tanks (N = 7) and pre-made blocks (N = 4). ln order to determine the artificial reef effects on the teleost community, trammel nets were used for monthly sampling the reef site (RA) and on a control area (AC) with sandy bottom. During the 23-month survey from April/96 to March/98, were recorded: a) Chaetodipterus faber (Broussonet, 1782) and Haemulon aurolieatum (Cuvier, 1829) as exclusive species of the RA; b) higher values of species richness and abundance on the RA, at least in 5 of 8 periods; c) increase on the fish abundance on summer months. Correlation analysis indicated that salinity and precipitation were the most significant environmental factors correlated with the temporal fish community variation. This results highlight the importance of rainfall periodicity and the influence of Paraíba do Sul River on the nekton assemblage distribution. It is suggested that the functional role of the artificial reef might be related to higher availability of local shelter and food resources.

Artificial reefs have been used in many countries to increase coastal fishery productivity. In order to increase fish attraction to the Northern Coast of Rio de Janeiro State, it was installed an artificial reef (1,500 m²) 5 nautical miles off Manguinhos's Bay (São Francisco de ltabapoana, Rio de Janeiro). The artificial structures were made of tires, concrete and cement blocks. A gill net of 125 x 3 m was monthly used in the artificial reef (AR) and in a control area (CA) to determine the effect of the experimental structures on the stock and diversity of coastal sharks. Considering the complexity of a sustainable elasmobranch exploitation, sharks were focused in this study. During 24 months of investigation (April/96 to March/98), a total of 325 individuais distributed in four shark species were captured in the two areas (AR and CA): Mustelus higmani (Springer & Lowe, 1963) (AR = 70; CA = 82 individuals), Rhizoprionodon lalandii (Valenciennes, 1839) (AR = 86; CA = 56 individuals), R. porosus (Poey, 1861) (AR = 16; CA = 14 individuals) and Carcharhinus brachyurus (Günther, 1870) (AR = 1 individual). The attractive potential of the artificial reef is suggested by the predominance of the shark R. lalandii in the reef complex after the first year of monitoring, with the increase of the structures.
