Resumen En este artículo se presentan los resultados de una primera aproximación al análisis del efecto moderador del contexto social, cultural y geográfico en indicadores subjetivos del envejecimiento saludable en personas mayores de 46 años residentes en territorios con características diferenciadas en Costa Rica. Se trabajó con una muestra de 305 personas residentes en tres áreas geográficas: una urbana, una semiurbana y una tercera principalmente rural. La diferenciación de las tres zonas se basó en criterios de densidad poblacional, infraestructura y acceso a bienes y servicios. Los indicadores subjetivos del envejecimiento saludable analizados fueron: participación social, apoyo social, salud percibida, espiritualidad, autoeficacia, comportamientos de autocuidado, bienestar subjetivo (satisfacción con la vida y bienestar psicológico) y estado de ánimo; todas las variables fueron condicionadas por zona de residencia, edad y sexo. Para analizar los indicadores subjetivos se estimó un análisis de covarianza (ANCOVA) o un análisis multivariado de covarianza (MANCOVA), dependiendo del número de variables dependientes analizadas. En general, se identificaron indicadores subjetivos de envejecimiento saludable altos en las personas participantes del estudio, quienes reportaron altos niveles de participación social, satisfacción con la vida y estados de salud y ánimo positivos. Se encontraron diferencias por edad entre los grupos. Sin embargo, no se evidenciaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en los indicadores subjetivos analizados según la zona de residencia o el sexo. En síntesis, este estudio encontró que los indicadores subjetivos de envejecimiento saludable analizados eran muy similares en residentes de tres zonas geográficas con características distintas. Estos hallazgos iniciales se discuten desde una perspectiva cultural y geográfica y en relación con los modelos de envejecimiento saludable.

Abstract This review exposes the results of a first approximation to the analysis of the moderator effect of the geographical, social, and cultural context on subjective indicators of healthy aging in the Costa Rican context. Costa Rica is a middle-income democratic country that is in an advanced demographic changing process; this phenomenon makes it one of the aged countries in the Latin American region. Therefore, studying healthy aging becomes relevant in the context of population demographic change in the present and future aging societies. The study compared several subjective indicators of healthy aging among people older than 46 who resided in three different geographical areas in the country. Participants were 305 healthy people from three locations: one urban (Heredia Central City), one semi-urban (Santa Ana Central City), and one mainly rural (Nicoya). Participants completed standardized assessment scales to evaluate social participation, social support, perceived health, spirituality, self-efficacy, self-care behaviors, and subjective well-being (life satisfaction and psychological well-being). All variables were conditioned by geographical zone (urban, semi-urban, and mainly rural), age, and gender. Either Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) or Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) were estimated depending on the number of dependent variables analyzed to test the effect of the zone of residence, gender, and age, over the subjective indicator of healthy aging studied. In general, participants evidenced high scores on subjective indicators such as self-care, social support, spirituality, life satisfaction, and psychological well-being, which have been associated with health and well-being during the aging process. Participants reported high levels of social participation and perceived that they received adequate support for their daily life needs. Likewise, participants evidenced a general state of well-being, a positive state of health, high levels of self-efficacy, and positive moods. Differences were found among the groups by comparing age. However, no significant differences were found in the variables studied related to geographical areas of residence and sex, suggesting invariant comparison evidence by zone of residence and sex. Nevertheless, the results indicate that the subjective indicators of healthy aging studied are key to promoting healthy aging at the national level. It is considered necessary to improve opportunities for social participation aimed at older adults, to strengthen community and family social networks, to promote socio-economic support such as financial and instrumental support for activities of daily living, and finally emotional support such as listening, empathy and advice. Although the differences among geographical areas of residence of the people studied were not statistically significant in this study, the evidence suggested a trend of high well-being indicators mainly in the rural areas studied, and particularly more in males than in females. As this study only reached preliminary data, further research must obtain conclusive evidence, as previous research had suggested older people living in rural areas with high longevity indicators in Costa Rica might enjoy unusual environmental characteristics and personal protective factors that could be absent in most of the urban areas in the country. On the other hand, it will be necessary to include the historical and socio-cultural determinants focusing on context-specific review analyses in the mainstream research on healthy aging, even more in aged countries like Costa Rica. The findings are discussed within the inter-cultural emphasis and healthy aging models in order to contribute to a better understanding of how the context (physical-constructed and social/cultural) influences the differences, although subtle, in the study´s variables and participants, and how the process of aging might be different according to the multiple contextual conditions in which people live and adapt their capacities and abilities for coping with daily life demands.

RESUMEN Introducción: El COVID-19 Persistente (CP) es una afección multisistémica que persiste tras una infección inicial por SARS-CoV-2. Nuestro objetivo es definir el perfil clínico del CP en trabajadores sanitarios mediante una consulta de vigilancia de salud específica de Medicina del Trabajo. Material y Métodos: Se estudiaron 645 trabajadores que padecieron COVID-19 desde el inicio de la pandemia hasta el 30/09/2022. Primero mediante entrevista telefónica y, posteriormente, en una consulta médica presencial. Resultados: Se recogieron más de 35 síntomas. Los síntomas más frecuentes fueron astenia, dolores osteomusculares, cefalea, dolores articulares, alteraciones del olfato y perdida del cabello en el grupo entrevistado telefónicamente. En los trabajadores vistos en consulta, la sintomatología más frecuente fue astenia, ojo seco, dolores articulares, pérdida de memoria, disnea y trastornos del sueño. Conclusión: Los trabajadores de atención a la salud han experimentado una sintomatología similar a la vista en otros estudios, pero en menor frecuencia y de menor gravedad.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Persistent COVID-19 (PC) is a multisystem condition that persists after an initial SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our objective is to define the clinical profile of PC in health workers through a specific Occupational Medicine health surveillance consultation. Material and methods: A total of 645 workers who suffered from COVID-19 were studied from the start of the pandemic until 09/30/2022. First by telephone interview and, later, in a face-to-face medical consultation. Results: More than 35 symptoms were collected. The most frequent symptoms were asthenia, musculoskeletal pain, headache, joint pain, smell disturbances, and hair loss in the group interviewed by telephone. In the workers seen in the consultation, the most frequent symptoms were asthenia, dry eye, joint pain, memory loss, dyspnea and sleep disorders. Conclusion: Health care workers have experienced symptoms similar to those seen in other studies, but less frequently and with less severity.

Abstract The use of synthetic chemical compounds to preserve foods or treat diseases of bacterial origin is limited because they can cause health damage. Therefore, the food and livestock industries seek natural strategies to preserve foods and preserve the health of animals intended for human consumption. In this sense, some extracts of plant from Sonora, Mexico could be an alternative due to the great diversity of plants and the fact that some of them are traditionally used to treat diseases. On the other hand, there are few studies that support the biological activity of ethanolic extracts of Gnaphalium oxyphyllum (E1) and Euphorbia maculata (E2). In this study, phytochemical content was determined by spectrophotometry, antimicrobial activity was determined by agar diffusion and antioxidant activity was evaluated by ABTS, DPPH and FRAP. The results showed that the E1 and E2 extracts had total phenols, total flavonoids, flavones and flavonols, total flavanones and dihydroflavonols, as well as total tannins, total chlorogenic acid and total polysaccharides. In addition, both extracts showed higher antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium ATCC 14028 when 1 mg ml-1 was used (P<0.05). In addition, they presented antioxidant activity by the methods of ABTS, DPPH and FRAP. Therefore, the antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of these plants represents a natural alternative to control some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in the livestock industry, as well as for food preservation.

Resumen El uso de compuestos químicos sintéticos para conservar alimentos o tratar enfermedades de origen bacteriano está limitado debido a que pueden ocasionar daños en la salud. Por ello, las industrias alimentaria y pecuaria buscan estrategias naturales para conservar alimentos y mantener la salud de los animales destinados a consumo humano. En este sentido, algunos extractos de plantas provenientes de Sonora, México podrían ser una alternativa debido a la gran diversidad de plantas y que algunas de ellas se utilizan tradicionalmente para tratar enfermedades. Por otro lado, son pocos los estudios que sustentan la actividad biológica de los extractos etanólicos de Gnaphalium oxyphyllum (E1) y Euphorbia maculata (E2). En este estudio, el contenido de fitoquímicos se determinó por espectrofotometría, la actividad antimicrobiana se determinó por difusión en agar y la actividad antioxidante se evaluó por ABTS, DPPH y FRAP. Los resultados mostraron que los extractos E1 y E2 presentaron fenoles totales, flavonoides totales, flavonas y flavonoles, flavanonas y dihidroflavonoles totales, así como, taninos totales, ácido clorogénico total y polisacáridos totales. Además, ambos extractos mostraron mayor actividad antimicrobiana contra Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 y Salmonella entérica serovar Typhimurium ATCC 14028 cuando se utilizó 1 mg ml-1 (P<0.05). Además, presentaron actividad antioxidante por los métodos de ABTS, DPPH y FRAP. Por lo anterior, el potencial antimicrobiano y antioxidante de estas plantas representa una alternativa natural para controlar algunas bacterias Gram positivas y Gram negativas en la industria pecuaria, así como para la conservación de alimentos.

Abstract Broccoli is one of the most economically important vegetables in Mexico, and one of the diseases that reduces its yield and quality is head rot, which has been associated with different phytopathogens. The objective of this study was to morphologically and molecularly identify the causal agents of head rot in broccoli cultivation in Mexico. Florets with rot symptoms were collected in different municipalities of the state of Guanajuato (León, San Francisco del Rincón, Valle de Santiago, Abasolo, Juventino Rosas and Dolores Hidalgo). The isolates obtained were identified based on their cultural, morphological and molecular characteristics (by PCR-ITS) as Alternaria alternata (AA), Fusarium oxysporum (FO) and Fusarium verticillioides (FV). The pathogenicity of these fungal species was corroborated by Koch's postulates. The fungal isolation frequency was 55, 26 and 19 % for AA, FV and FO, respectively, of the total samples analyzed. The sequence obtained from a representative isolate of each fungus was compared with those reported in the NCBI gene bank, where the highest similarity percentages were 99.6, 98.9 and 98.2 % for FO, FV and AA, respectively, thus confirming the morphological identification results. This is the second report of the presence of AA and FO associated with broccoli head rot in Mexico, and the first report of FV as part of the complex of causal agents of this disease.

Resumen El brócoli es una de las hortalizas de mayor importancia económica en México, y una de las enfermedades que reduce su rendimiento y calidad es la pudrición del florete, la cual se ha asociado a diferentes fitopatógenos. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue identificar morfológica y molecularmente a los agentes causales de la pudrición del florete en el cultivo de brócoli en México. Se colectaron floretes con síntomas de pudrición en diferentes municipios del estado de Guanajuato (León, San Francisco del Rincón, Valle de Santiago, Abasolo, Juventino Rosas y Dolores Hidalgo). Los aislados obtenidos se identificaron con base en sus características culturales, morfológicas y moleculares (mediante PCR-ITS) como Alternaria alternata (AA), Fusarium oxysporum (FO) y Fusarium verticillioides (FV). La patogenicidad de estas especies fúngicas se corroboró mediante los postulados de Koch. La frecuencia de aislamiento de los hongos fue de 55, 26 y 19 % para AA, FV y FO, respectivamente, del total de muestras analizadas. La secuencia obtenida de un aislado representativo de cada hongo se comparó con las reportadas en el banco de genes del NCBI, donde los mayores porcentajes de similitud fueron 99.6, 98.9 y 98.2 % para FO, FV y AA, respectivamente, con lo cual se confirmaron los resultados de la identificación morfológica. Este es el segundo reporte de la presencia de AA y FO asociados a la pudrición del florete de brócoli en México, y el primer reporte de FV como parte del complejo de agentes causales de esta enfermedad.

Resumen Este trabajo pretende aportar conocimiento de la eficiencia, planteándose como objetivo valorar la eficiencia relativa desde una perspectiva del análisis envolvente de datos en las universidades de Ecuador. Llevándose a cabo una propuesta retrospectiva de corte transversal tomándose como referencia el análisis envolvente de datos, técnica no paramétrica que permitió la medición relativa de las unidades, donde el modelo CCR-O reveló que 16 DMUs son eficientes y, en el modelo BCC-O fueron 20; se destacan la Escuela Politécnica del Ejército y la del Litoral. En la escala con bootstrap 16 DMUs del modelo CCR-O y 20 del BCC-O alcanzaron Eficiencia Técnica Pura, encontrándose sobre la frontera eficiente; mientras que, en la puntuación de ineficiencia, en el modelo CCR-O 38 son ineficientes, así como, 34 del modelo BCC-O. Este hecho muestra los valores reales de Docencia-Investigación-Gestión frente a los específicos, donde las DMUs ineficientes obtienen el 33,33% y en la variable de entrada, no se muestra un efecto significativo en las puntuaciones de la eficiencia; mientras que, en Docencia-Investigación las DMUs ineficientes alcanzan el 61,11%, Docencia el 55,55%, Docencia-Gestión el 48,14%. Por tanto, las Unidades están sobre dotadas de parámetros en sus resultados, de acuerdo con sus valores reales. Finalmente, la limitación se configuró según el modelo DEA-BCC de output orientado con rendimiento a escala y, resultó útil para medir el desempeño. No obstante, su alcance global puede distorsionar la realidad de la eficiencia técnica, en función de los recursos de las universidades.

Abstract This work aims to provide knowledge of efficiency; hence, it was proposed to assess the relative efficiency from a perspective of Data Envelopment Analysis in the Universities of Ecuador. A cross-sectional retrospective proposal was carried out, a data envelopment analysis was used as a reference, and a non-parametric technique allowed to measure the relative efficiency of decision-making units or DMUs. The CCR-O model revealed that 16 DMUs were efficient, whereas 20 DMUs were efficient under the BCC-O model, standing out both universities, Escuela Politécnica del Ejército and Litoral. Following the Bootstrap scale, 16 DMUs of the CCR-O model and 20 DMUs of the BCC-O reached Pure Technical Efficiency. Those units were found above the efficient frontier. The CCR-O model showed that 38 DMUs were inefficient within the inefficiency score, similar to the BCC-O model showing 34 inefficient DMUs. When comparing the real and specific values of Teaching-Research-Management, the inefficient DMUs obtained 33.33%. This input variable did not show a significant effect on the efficiency measures. While the inefficient DMUs reached 61.11% in Teaching-Research, 55.55% in Teaching, and 48.14% in Teaching-Management. Therefore, based on their real values, the units were over-endowed with parameters in their results. This work was designed following the output-oriented DEA-BCC model with performance to scale. This approach helped measure the performance of universities. However, its overall scope may misinterpret the real technical efficiency that depends on the universities’ resources.

Resumen La mastitis bovina es una enfermedad causada por bacterias patógenas que infectan la glándula mamaria del ganado lechero, lo cual genera pérdidas económicas importantes, además, debido al uso excesivo de antibióticos para tratar esta enfermedad, los microorganismos han creado resistencia a estos fármacos, por ello, se buscan nuevas alternativas para este fin. El objetivo fue evaluar el efecto antimicrobiano de extractos de plantas nativas de Sonora contra bacterias patógenas aisladas de vacas diagnosticadas con mastitis. Se obtuvieron 17 extractos etanólicos de plantas nativas de Sonora, y se evaluó su actividad antimicrobiana por el método de difusión en agar contra siete patógenos aislados de leche de vacas con mastitis utilizando una concentración de 50 mg/ml de cada extracto. El contenido de fenoles y flavonoides totales se determinó mediante espectrofotometría. Los resultados mostraron que los extractos de Ibervillea sonorae (wereke, tubérculo), Populus alba (álamo, hojas), Ambrosia ambrosioides (chicura, tallos), Krameria sonorae (cosahui, raíces) y Prosopis velutina (mezquite, hojas) fueron eficaces para eliminar a S. aureus, Streptococcus spp., E. coli, Enterobacter spp., Proteus spp., Shigella spp. y Citrobacter spp. (P<0.05). Además, los extractos con alto contenido de fenoles y flavonoides totales (wereke, álamo, chicura, cosahui y mezquite) mostraron una correlación inversa con respecto al pH (r = -0.94, r = -0.92, respectivamente) (P<0.05) y presentaron mayor actividad antimicrobiana contra los patógenos probados. Por lo anterior, los extractos de las plantas de Sonora podrían representar una alternativa para el control de patógenos Gram (+) y Gram (-) que infectan la glándula mamaria del ganado lechero.

Abstract Bovine mastitis is a disease caused by pathogenic bacteria that infect the mammary gland of dairy cattle, which generates significant economic losses, in addition, due to the excessive use of antibiotics to treat this disease, microorganisms have created resistance to these drugs, therefore, new alternatives are sought for this purpose. The objective was to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of extracts of plant native to Sonora against pathogenic bacteria isolated from cows diagnosed with mastitis. Seventeen ethanolic extracts were obtained from plants native to Sonora, and their antimicrobial activity was evaluated by the agar diffusion method against seven pathogens isolated from milk from cows with mastitis, using a concentration of 50 mg/ml of each extract. The content of total phenols and flavonoids was determined by spectrophotometry. The results showed that extracts of Ibervillea sonorae (wereke, tuber), Populus alba (poplar, leaves), Ambrosia ambrosioides (chicura, stems), Krameria sonorae (cosahui, roots) and Prosopis velutina (mesquite, leaves) were effective in eliminating S. aureus, Streptococcus spp., E. coli, Enterobacter spp., Proteus spp., Shigella spp. and Citrobacter spp. (P<0.05). In addition, extracts high in total phenols and flavonoids (wereke, poplar, chicura, cosahui and mesquite) showed an inverse correlation with respect to pH (r= -0.94, r= -0.92, respectively) (P<0.05) and had greater antimicrobial activity against the tested pathogens. Therefore, the extracts of plants from Sonoran could represent an alternative for the control of Gram (+) and Gram (-) pathogens that infect the mammary gland of dairy cattle.

Abstract Direct oral anticoagulants have emerged as the drugs that have changed the man agement of the antithrombotic treatment in the last 15 years. Their advantages, like a more friendly way of anticoagulation and their lower risk of bleeding, especially in the brain, have positioned these new anticoagu lants as the first drug of choice in the two most frequent indications of anticoagulation, atrial fibrillation, and the venous thromboembolic disease. However, not all the patients can receive these agents, not all the direct oral anticoagulants have the same characteristics, and most importantly, not all the diseases with an indication of an anticoagulant drug can be treated with them. Therefore, it is mandatory that all the faculties involved in the management of these drugs must know them in depth, to decide the best treatment for the patient. This position paper, from a group of experts in anticoagulation in Argentina, can help the general practitioner in the daily use of direct oral anticoagulants based on the new evidence and the experience of a wide group of professionals. The way we relate to the anticoagulant treatment has changed in the last years. The doctors who work with them must also do so.

Resumen Los anticoagulantes orales directos han surgido como una de las herramientas que ha cambiado el manejo de la enfermedad trombótica en los últimos 15 años. Sus ventajas, desde el punto de vista de la facilidad de uso y menor riesgo de sangrado, especialmente de sangrado cerebral, han posicionado a estos nuevos anticoagulantes como la primera alternativa de tratamiento en las dos indicaciones más frecuentes en que necesitamos estas drogas, la fibrilación auricular y la enfermedad tromboembólica venosa. Sin embargo, no todos los pacientes pueden recibir estos agentes, no todos los anticoagulantes directos tienen las mismas pro piedades y fundamentalmente, no todas las enfermedades con indicación de un anticoagulante pueden tratarse con ellos;con lo cual es necesario que todos los profesionales que están involucrados en el manejo de estos medicamentos estén obligados a conocerlos en profundidad, para poder decidir el mejor tratamiento en cada caso particular. Este documento de posición de expertos de diferentes especialidades de Argentina, presenta lineamientos para el uso correcto de los anticoagulantes directos en base a nueva evidencia y a la experiencia de uso de un amplio grupo de profesionales. La forma de relacionarnos con el tratamiento anticoagulante ha cambiado. Los médicos que trabajamos con ellos también debemos hacerlo.

Resumen Introducción: El avance en los tratamientos oncológicos, como la inmunoterapia, conlleva una mayor complejidad de la asistencia y del cuidado hacia el paciente. Metodología: Estudio descriptivo en el que participaron 100 sujetos tenía como objetivo principal describir los principales efectos inmunomediados en los pacientes atendidos en la consulta de enfermería. Resultados: El cáncer de pulmón es la enfermedad oncológica donde más se prescribe inmunoterapia, siendo los principales efectos inmunomediados: astenia, artralgia y mialgias, seguido de hepatitis en grado 2-3. Discusión: el efecto inmunomediado de afectación hepática no coincide con lo hallado en otros estudios.

Abstract Introduction: There has been a great advance in treatments in oncology, the adverse effects of immunotherapy entails a greater complexity of care. Methodology: Descriptive study on the main immune-mediated effects detected in the newly created nursing consultation This study has an intensification grant from the research institute of the hospital of realization. Results: N=100 patients where the main immune-mediated effects have been asthenia, arthralgia and myalgia, followed by grade 2-3 transaminitis. Discussion: The main effect has been hepatitis, which does not coincide with other studies.

RESUMEN Introducción: Las espondiloartritis son un grupo de enfermedades inflamatorias crónicas con afectación principalmente del esqueleto axial y también de articulaciones periféricas. En cuanto al metabolismo óseo de estos pacientes, se ha observado en algunos estudios que existen niveles más bajos de vitamina D en pacientes con espondiloartritis. Objetivo: Estimar la prevalencia de déficit/insuficiencia de vitamina D, el metabolismo fosfocálcico y sus implicaciones en una cohorte de pacientes con espondiloartritis. Metodología: Estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal. Se llevó a cabo una revisión retrospectiva de la base de datos de pacientes con espondiloartritis que fueron atendidos en las consultas externas del Servicio de Reumatología del Hospital General Universitario de Ciudad Real entre junio del 2018 y junio del 2019. Las variables se describieron usando medidas de frecuencia o medidas de tendencia central/dispersión según correspondiera. Resultados: Se analizaron 115 pacientes, de los cuales 64 fueron hombres y 51 mujeres, con una edad media de 45,97 años (± 13,41 DE). Del total de los pacientes, 59 presentaron espondilitis anquilosante, 24 artropatía psoriásica, 9 artritis asociada a enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal, 12 espondiloartritis axial no radiográfica y 11 artritis reactiva. Los niveles de vitamina D fueron de 23,81 ng/ml (±10,5 DE), con un 77,4% de los pacientes con cifras de déficit/insuficiencia de vitamina D. Agrupados por el subtipo de espondiloartritis y según las cifras de déficit/insuficiencia de vitamina D, 45 pacientes tenían espondilitis anquilosante, 19 artropatía psoriásica, 9 artritis asociada a enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal, 7 espondiloartritis axiales no radiográficas y 9 artritis reactivas. Además, el déficit de vitamina D (< 20 ng/ml) se presentaba la mayoría de las veces en las estaciones de primavera e invierno, con 31 y 26 pacientes respectivamente. Conclusiones: Una optimización de los niveles de vitamina D puede implicar una mejoría en la situación clínica del paciente, medida tanto por BASDAI y DAPSA como por PCR y VSG. En consecuencia, se recomienda la monitorización y suplementación de vitamina D en pacientes con hipovitaminosis D.

In bone metabolism studies on these patients, it has been observed that there are lower levels of vitamin D in patients with spondyloarthritis. They included 59 patients with ankylosing spondylitis, 24 with psoriatic arthropathy, 9 arthritis associated with inflammatory bowel disease, 12 non-radiographic axial spondylarthritis, and 11 reactive arthritis. Vitamin D levels were 23.81 ng/ml (± 10.5 SD), with 77.4% of patients with vitamin D deficiency / insufficiency levels. Grouped by the spondylarthritis subtype, and according to vitamin D deficiency / insufficiency, 45 patients had ankylosing spondylitis, 19 psoriatic arthropathy, 9 arthritis associated with inflammatory bowel disease, 7 non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis, and 9 reactive arthritis. Furthermore, vitamin D deficiency (< 20 ng/ml) mainly occurred in the spring and winter seasons, with 31 and 26 patients, respectively. Conclusions: An optimization of vitamin D levels may lead to an improvement in the clinical situation of the patients, as measured by both BASDAI and DAPSA, as well as by PCR and ESR. Therefore, vitamin D monitoring and supplementation is recommended in patients with vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract Objective To evaluate the specific activity of lectin in healthy and infected teosinte Zea diploperennis with Ustilago maydis. Materials and methods. Zea diploperennis seedlings of 6 days of growth were inoculated with Ustilago maydis. Total protein concentration and hemagglutinating activity of crude extracts of healthy and infected teosinte were evaluated in microtiter plates with 3% type O red cells following the technique of serial double dilutions for 6 days. Results. The concentration of total proteins increases in healthy coleoptile during each day of its growth. Not so in infected teosinte where the curve shows a downward trend from the moment of inoculation. The specific lectin activity decreases in both cases from the first day of quantification. Conclusions. The evident reduction in lectin activity in infected teosinte compared to healthy teosinte could explain the susceptibility of this teosinte to said phytopathogen. Although the participation of the teosinte and corn lectins in the defense mechanism against Ustilago maydis has not yet been clarified, the results obtained contribute to the understanding of the effect that the concentration of lectin and protein can have on resistance in teosinte.

Abstract Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. Previous studies of opinions related to climate change point to an absence of integrated comprehension. The current study, of a qualitative nature, found that university students and professors perceive climate change as real and worrisome. They associate the causes of climate change with egotism, human actions, capitalism, consumerism, overpopulation, pollution, lack of education, corruption, low public spending, and sanctions for industry; as consequences, they identify environmental impact and disease, and changes in behavior and mood; with respect to actions, they indicate the need to create awareness, to educate and sensitize, to create spaces for reflection, and to spread information about sustainability and environmental protection.

Resumen El cambio climático es uno de los grandes desafíos que enfrenta la humanidad. Investigaciones previas permiten identificar que no existe una comprensión integral de las opiniones sobre este fenómeno. Esta investigación, de corte cualitativo, tuvo por objetivo profundizar en la percepción acerca del cambio climático de estudiantes y profesores universitarios. Se encontró que los participantes lo perciben como real y preocupante; sus causas se asociaron al egoísmo, acciones humanas, capitalismo, consumismo, sobrepoblación, contaminación, falta de educación, corrupción, poco presupuesto público y sanciones para industrias; como consecuencias se identificaron impactos ambientales y enfermedades, cambios de comportamiento y estado de ánimo, respecto de acciones, indicaron que es necesario tomar conciencia, educar y sensibilizar, crear espacios de reflexión, difundir información sobre sustentabilidad y cuidado del medio ambiente.

Abstract Corn (Zea mays) is the most consumed cereal in México, so it is necessary to know the nutritional and anatomical quality of the grains, which have been the main conservation and consumption criteria of the prehispanic peoples. This practice has allowed to preserve varieties of Creole corn, however, due to the lack of knowledge of these characteristics the cultivation of these maize has been reduced, presenting a high risk of disappearing. The objective was to determine the physical, nutritive and functional quality of four varieties of creole corn: Purple-Olotillo, Dos-Puntas, Toro and Olotillo. Toro presented the highest values of width and thickness (10.79 and 7.71 mm). The Toro showed better values of Endosperm and Pericarp (84.25% and 4.01%), Dos-Puntas and Olotillo showed higher values of Germ (10.75%) and Pericarp (6.2%), respectively. The Toro had a higher content of Carbohydrates and Proteins (74.47 and 10.61%). In WSI, the best value was obtained by Dos-Puntas (11.91%) and WAI the Olotillo (245.56 g H2O/g sample). It is concluded that the Toro has better nutritional content and larger and weight grains, while the Olotillo presented the highest values of WAI, it can confer better technological properties for food processing.

Abstract Treating an anticoagulated patient with vitamin K antagonists (VKA) remains a challenge, especially in areas where dicoumarins are still the first drug of choice due to the cost of other oral anticoagulants. Anticoagulation clinics have proven to be the most efficient and safe way to avoid thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications and to keep patients in optimal treatment range. However, they require adequate infrastructure and trained personnel to work properly. In this Argentine consensus we propose a series of guidelines for the effective management of the anticoagulation clinics. The goal is to achieve the excellence in both the clinical healthcare and the hemostasis laboratory for the anticoagulated patient. The criteria developed in the document were agreed upon by a large group of expert specialists in hematology and biochemistry from all over the country. The criteria presented here must always be considered when indicating VKA although they had to be adapted to the unequal reality of each center. Taking these premises into consideration will allow us to optimize the management of the anticoagulated patient with VKA and thus minimize thrombotic and hemorrhagic intercurrences, in order to honor our promise not to harm the patient.

Resumen El tratamiento de un paciente anticoagulado con antagonistas de la vitamina K (AVK) sigue siendo un desafío, especialmente en regiones donde, por el costo, los dicumarínicos son todavía la alternativa más buscada a la hora de elegir un anticoagulante oral. Las clínicas de anticoagulación han demostrado ser la forma más eficiente y segura de evitar complicaciones trombóticas y hemorrágicas y de mantener al paciente en rango óptimo de tratamiento. Sin embargo, requieren de una adecuada infraestructura y personal capacitado para que funcionen eficientemente. En este consenso argentino se propone una serie de parámetros para la gestión efectiva de una clínica de anticoagulación. El objetivo es lograr una elevada calidad desde el punto de vista clínico-asistencial a través de un laboratorio de hemostasia de excelencia. Los criterios desarrollados en el documento fueron consensuados por un amplio grupo de expertos especialistas en hematología y en bioquímica de todo el país. Estos criterios deben adaptarse a la irregular disponibilidad de recursos de cada centro, pero siempre se los debe tener en cuenta a la hora de indicar el tratamiento anticoagulante con estas drogas. Tener en consideración estas premisas nos permitirá optimizar la atención del enfermo anticoagulado con AVK y de esta forma minimizar las intercurrencias trombóticas y hemorrágicas a las que está expuesto, para así honrar nuestra promesa de no dañar al paciente.

ABSTRACT Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been associated with the development of precancerous lesions of the cervix and cervical cancer (CC). Prophylactic HPV vaccination induces the development of a specific memory immune response that facilitates HPV elimination once the natural infection occurs. At present, in addition to the prophylactic vaccine, therapeutic vaccines are being developed and researched with the aim of inducing an immune response that allows the elimination of HPV-infected cells. The purpose of this study is to describe the current evidence on the use of therapeutic vaccines and their effect on cervical precancerous lesions, to establish recommendations on their clinical use. So far, the studies that have generated results have described a marginal beneficial effect of the prophylactic vaccine in the management of infection and pre-invasive lesions. Based on the evidence, continuing research on the efficacy and safety of therapeutic vaccines for the treatment of cervical intraepithelial lesions is recommended. The use of the HPV prophylactic vaccine as treatment for pre-existing lesions is not advised, but it is recommended to prevent new lesions.
