ABSTRACT. Cowpea planting season is crucial for high yield and should comprise the period of the year that warrants the best climatic conditions for cowpea cultivation. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of water availability and temperature on the performance of cowpea cultivars. A greenhouse experiment was conducted using a 4 × 2 × 5 factorial arrangement, with four replications. Factors included four levels of soil moisture (25, 50, 75, and 100% of water holding capacity), two growing seasons (mild and hot), and five cowpea cultivars (Carijó, Itaim, Pujante, Rouxinol, and Tapahium). The number of pods and seeds per plant, seed production, water use efficiency, shoot dry mass, root dry mass, and physiological parameters were evaluated. Seed production was higher during the mild season than during the hot season and increased linearly with increasing soil water availability. Photosynthetic activity and transpiration were higher during the hot season than during the mild season, with their reduction under a water availability of 25% regardless of the growing season. Total chlorophyll content decreased with excess water. Regardless of water availability, temperature was the most limiting climatic factor for cowpea performance. Cultivars Carijó, Itaim, and Tapahium exhibited a lower reduction in productive potential when grown in the hot season.

RESUMO Considerando-se que mudanças nos parâmetros climáticos interferem diretamente na produtividade das culturas, objetivou-se avaliar o impacto de mudanças nas concentrações de dióxido de carbono, temperatura e disponibilidade hídrica do solo na produção, eficiência do uso de água e qualidade de cebola (Allium cepa L. cv. IPA 11). Foram avaliados quatro níveis de disponibilidade de água no solo (40, 60, 80 e 100 %) e duas concentrações de CO2 atmosférico (770 e 390 ppm), em três experimentos com diferentes regimes de temperatura (18-24-30, 22-28-34 e 26-32-38 ºC), em câmera de crescimento Fitotron. Também foram avaliados a eficiência do uso de água, diâmetro e peso dos bulbos, massa seca da parte aérea, firmeza da polpa, teor de sólidos solúveis, pH e acidez titulável. O aumento da temperatura reduz a produção, e maior disponibilidade de água no solo eleva a produção de bulbos de cebola IPA 11. O regime de temperatura de 18-24-30 ºC e a disponibilidade hídrica de 76,72 % proporcionam melhor eficiência no uso de água para a cultura da cebola.

ABSTRACT Considering that changes in climatic parameters directly interfere in crop yields, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of changes in carbon dioxide concentrations, temperature and soil water availability on production, water-use efficiency and onion (Allium cepa L. cv. IPA 11) quality. Four levels of soil water availability (40, 60, 80 and 100 %) and two concentrations of atmospheric CO2 (770 and 390 ppm) were evaluated in three experiments with different temperature regimes (18-24-30, 22-28-34 and 26-32-38 ºC), in Phytotron growth chambers. The water-use efficiency, bulb diameter and weight, shoot dry weight, pulp frmness, soluble solids content, pH and titratable acidity were also evaluated. The increase in temperature reduces the production, and a higher soil water availability increases the production of IPA 11 onion bulbs. The temperature regime of 18-24-30 ºC and the water availability of 76.72 % provide the best water-use efficiency for the onion crop.

RESUMO O déficit hídrico e as altas temperaturas são os fatores abióticos que mais restringem o crescimento e desenvolvimento das plantas. Entretanto, seus efeitos dependem da fase de desenvolvimento da cultura, da duração e da intensidade do estresse. Com isso, objetivou-se com esse trabalho, avaliar o desenvolvimento do feijão-caupi submetido à restrição hídrica em diferentes fases fenológicas e ao aumento da temperatura do ar. O experimento foi conduzido com a cultivar Carijó, em câmaras de crescimento, em arranjo fatorial de 4x3x2, sendo as disponibilidades hídricas (25, 50, 75, and 100%,) as fases fenológicas (vegetativa, floração e enchimento das vagens) e os regimes de temperatura (T°1: 20-26-33 °C e T°2: 24.8-30.8-37.8 °C) , respectivamente. A redução da disponibilidade hídrica nas fases vegetativa e na floração ocasionou queda na produção de sementes. A porcentagem de flores abortadas foi maior para as plantas mantidas no regime de temperatura com um aumento de 4.8 °C, com consequentemente, redução na produção de sementes. O aumento da disponibilidade hídrica, favoreceu a produção de massa seca da parte aérea e da raiz. O aumento de 4,8 °C não afetou o peso da massa seca da parte aérea e das raízes, porém, reduziu cerca de 83% da eficiência de uso da água pela planta. Verificou-se as maiores atividades enzimáticas da CAT GPX e SOD nas plantas submetidas ao regime de temperatura de com um aumento de 4.8 °C. Apenas a APX apresentou menor atividade enzimática com o aumento da temperatura. A cv. Carijó apresenta maior sensibilidade ao aumento de 4,8 °C na temperatura do ar do que aos déficits hídricos.

ABSTRACT Water deficit and high temperatures are abiotic factors that most limit plant growth and development. However, its effects depend on crop development stage and on stress duration and intensity. Thus, the objective of was to evaluate the development of cowpea subjected to water restriction in different phenological stages and to increase in air temperature. The experiment was conducted with the cultivar ‘Carijó’, in growth chambers, in a 4 x 3 x 2 factorial arrangement, corresponding to levels of water availability (25, 50, 75, and 100%,), phenological stages (vegetative, flowering and pod filling) and temperature regimes (T°1: 20-26-33 °C e T°2: 24.8-30.8-37.8 °C), respectively. Reduction of water availability in the vegetative and flowering stages caused decrease in grain production. The percentage of aborted flowers was higher in plants maintained under an increased temperature of +4.8 °C, with consequent reduction in grain production. Higher water availability values favored shoot and root dry mass production. Increase of 4.8 °C did not affect shoot and root dry mass but reduced water use efficiency by about 83%. The highest enzymatic activities of CAT, GPX and SOD were found in plants subjected to the temperature of +4.8 °C. Only APX showed lower enzymatic activity with increasing temperature. The cv. ‘Carijó’ is more sensitive to the 4.8 °C increase in air temperature than to water deficits.

RESUMEN La temperatura es uno de los elementos climáticos que afectan la mayoría del proceso de germinación y el desarrollo de las plántulas. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la germinación y el desarrollo de plántulas de los cultivares de frijol caupí a temperatura creciente. Para este propósito, las semillas de los cultivares Acauã, Carijó, Guariba, Gurguéia, Itaim, Juruá, Pajeú, Potengi, Pujante, Nightingale, Tapahium y Tumucumaque se mantuvieron en la cámara de germinación a temperaturas de 20, 25, 30, 35 y 40°C, con fotoperiodo de 12 horas. Las semillas de frijol caupí tienen un rendimiento óptimo de germinación y desarrollo de plántulas a temperaturas en el rango de 30.49 - 35.48°C. Los cultivares presentaron un porcentaje de germinación superior al 91% por debajo de 40°C, sin embargo, no se observó formación de plántulas normales. La temperatura de 20°C proporcionó una germinación superior al 96%, pero con un período más largo para germinar. El rango de temperatura entre 30 y 35°C favoreció el índice de velocidad de germinación, el tiempo promedio y la velocidad de germinación de la semilla, con temperaturas óptimas que varían entre los cultivares. La tasa más alta de plántulas normales se observó a temperaturas entre 25 y 35°C.

ABSTRACT Temperature is one of the climatic elements that affect germination and seedling development. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate germination and seedling development in cowpea cultivars under increasing temperatures. Seeds from the cultivars Acauã, Carijó, Guariba, Gurguéia, Itaim, Juruá, Pajeú, Potengi, Pujante, Rouxinol, Tapahium, and Tumucumaque were kept in a germination chamber at temperatures of 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40°C, with a photoperiod of 12 h. Cowpea seeds have optimal germination performance and seedling development at temperatures in the range of 30.49 - 35.48°C. The cultivars presented a germination percentage above 91% under 40°C; however, the seedlings were abnormal. The temperature 20°C provided germination above 96% but required a longer period to germinate. The temperature range between 30 - 35°C favored the germination speed index, an average time, and seed germination speed, with optimum temperatures varying between the cultivars. The highest normal seedling rate was observed at temperatures between 25 and 35°C.

RESUMO O aumento dos níveis de CO2 e da temperatura podem afetar o crescimento e a produtividade das plantas. Objetivou-se avaliar o impacto do aumento da concentração de dióxido de carbono e da temperatura no desenvolvimento de cultivares de feijão-caupi. O experimento foi conduzido em câmaras de crescimento, com controle de CO2 e temperatura. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo fatorial 4 x 3 x 2 [cultivar x temperatura (diurna/noturna) x CO2], com três repetições. Foi avaliada a duração das fases vegetativa e reprodutiva do feijão-caupi e, ao final do experimento, quantificado o número de vagens por planta, número de grãos por vagem, peso das sementes, peso da matéria fresca e seca da parte aérea. A temperatura afeta o desenvolvimento das cultivares de feijão-caupi, sendo que as temperaturas de 29 ºC (dia)/23 ºC (noite) proporcionam sementes com maior peso. O aumento de CO2 incrementa o número de vagens e de sementes e o peso das sementes. A cultivar BRS Tapaihum apresentou maior número de vagens e de sementes e peso de sementes. Além disso, as temperaturas de 32 ºC (dia)/29 ºC (noite) provocam maior abortamento de flores nas cultivares BRS Pujante e BRS Tapaihum.

ABSTRACT The increase of CO2 concentrations and temperatures may affect the plant development and production. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the increased temperature and carbon dioxide concentration on the development of cowpea cultivars. The experiment was conducted in growth chambers, with control of CO2 and temperature. A completely randomized design was carried out, in a 4 x 3 x 2 factorial arrangement [cultivar x temperature (day/night) x CO2], with three replicates. The duration of the cowpea vegetative and reproductive phases was evaluated and, at the end of the experiment, the number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, seed weight, shoot fresh and dry matter weight were quantified. Temperature affects the development of cowpea cultivars, and the temperatures of 29 ºC (day)/23 ºC (night) lead to a higher seed weight. The increase of CO2 leads to a higher number of pods and seeds and seed weight. The BRS Tapaihum cultivar presented the highest number of pods and seeds and seed weight. In addition, the temperatures of 32 ºC (day)/29 ºC (night) lead to a greater flower abortion in the BRS Pujante and BRS Tapaihum cultivars.

Resumo: Myracrodruon urundeuva, espécie nativa da Caatinga e de ampla distribuição geográfica, apresenta relevante valor socioeconômico. Objetivou-se avaliar a influência de estresses ambientais sobre a germinação de lotes de diferentes safras de M. urundeuva. Foram testadas as temperaturas constantes de 10 a 40 °C e potenciais osmóticos de 0 a -0,8 MPa (usando-se polietileno glicol 6000) e de 0 a -0,5 MPa (usando-se soluções de NaCl). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com três repetições de 50 sementes em esquema fatorial (safras x intensidade do estresse) para cada estresse abiótico. Os dados de germinação foram então analisados utilizando modelos de tempo térmico, hídrico, hálico (salino), projetando respostas de germinação em cenários climáticos futuros. Os limites térmicos para a germinação das sementes variaram entre 7,4 e 53,3 oC. O limite osmótico base para germinação de sementes em polietileno glicol foi de -0,6 MPa e em NaCl foi de -0,43 MPa. Segundo modelos de cenários futuros de mudanças climáticas, a redução de semanas com precipitação mínima afetará diretamente a germinação de sementes e o recrutamento de plântulas de M. urundeuva. Assim, conclui-se que sementes de M. urundeuva foram tolerantes aos estresses abióticos. Os modelos de tempo térmico, hídrico e hálico foram eficientes para descrever a resposta foram eficientes para descrever a resposta germinativa de sementes, e os modelos climáticos permitiram identificar as respostas germinativas de M. urundeuva em cenários futuros de mudanças climáticas. De acordo com os modelos para clima futuro (RCP 8.5), a redução da precipitação até 2100 afetará diretamente a germinação de sementes e recrutamento de plântulas de M. urundeuva.

Abstract: Myracrodruon urundeuva, a native species from the Brazilian Caatinga, is widely distributed across its endemic region, where it also plays an essential socioeconomic role. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental stress on the germination of M. urundeuva seeds harvested in different years (2010 to 2013). Seeds were germinated at constant temperatures between 10 to 40 °C, osmotic potentials from 0 to -0.8 MPa (in polyethylene glycol 6000 solutions), and from 0 to -0.5 MPa (in NaCl solutions). The experiment was conducted according to a completely randomized design, with three replicates of 50 seeds, in a factorial scheme (harvest year x stress intensity) for each environmental stress. Germination data were then analysed using thermal, hydro and halo time models, and future germination responses projected according to climate change scenarios. The germination thermal thresholds ranged from 7.4 to 53.3 oC. The germination base osmotic threshold (using polyethylene glycol) was -0.6 MPa and the base osmotic threshold in NaCl was -0.43MPa. Seeds from different harvest years showed distinct tolerance to environmental stresses. The thermal, hydro and halo-time models were efficient to describe the germinative response of seeds, and the climate models allowed to identify the germination responses of M. urundeuva in future climate. According to the models for future climate (RCP 8.5), the reduction of rainfall by 2100 will directly affect seed germination and seedling recruitment of M. urundeuva.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial impacto das mudanças climáticas na ocorrência do míldio da videira no Brasil. Mudas com quatro a seis folhas foram pulverizadas com uma suspensão de esporângios de 105 esporângios por mililitro. Após a pulverização, as mudas foram submetidas às temperaturas de 26, 28, 29,1, 30,4 e 31,8°C, por 24 horas. Avaliaram-se a percentagem da área foliar doente e o período latente. Elaboraram-se mapas de distribuição geográfica e temporal da doença com as médias mensais da temperatura média do ar e da duração de período de molhamento foliar do clima de referência ou normal climatológica (1961-1990) e climas futuros (2011-2040, 2041-2070 e 2071-2100), nos cenários de emissão de gases B1 e A2, projetados pelo Painel Intergovernamental sobre Mudanças Climáticas (IPCC). Foram estabelecidas faixas de favorabilidade, utilizadas nas funções lógicas no sistema de informações geográficas (SIG) para a geração de mapas mensais para o míldio. O aumento da temperatura interferiu na infecção do míldio da videira, diminuiu a severidade da doença e aumentou o período latente. Os cenários climáticos futuros são indicativos de redução da favorabilidade do míldio no território brasileiro, com variabilidade para as diferentes regiões produtoras de uva.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential impact of climate change on the occurrence of grapevine downy mildew in Brazil. Seedlings containing four to six leaves were sprayed with a sporangia suspension containing 105 sporangia per milliliter. After spraying, the seedlings were subjected to temperatures of 26, 28, 29.1, 30.4, and 31.8°C for 24 hours. The percentage of diseased leaf area and the latent period were evaluated. Maps of the geographic and temporal distribution of the disease were made considering the monthly average of the mean air temperature and leaf wetness duration for the reference climate or climate normal (1961-1990) and the future climates (2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100), considering the A2 and B1 gas emission scenarios, designed by the Intergovernamental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Favorability ranges were set and used in logic functions of the geografical information system (GIS) to generate monthly maps for grapevine downy mildew. Rising temperatures interfered with the grapevine downy mildew infections, reduced the disease severity, and increased the latent period. Future climate scenarios indicate a reduction of favorability of downy mildew in Brazil, with variability in the different grape producing regions.

The objective of the present trial was to evaluate the productive and morphogenetic characteristics of buffel grass subjected to different air temperatures and CO2 concentrations. Three cultivars of buffel grass (Biloela, Aridus and West Australian) were compared. Cultivars were grown in growth chambers at three temperatures (day/night): 26/20, 29/23, and 32/26 °C, combined with two concentrations of CO2: 370 and 550 µmol mol-1. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 3 × 3 × 2 factorial arrangement with three replications. There were interactions between buffel grass cultivars and air temperatures on leaf elongation rate (LER), leaf appearance rate (LAR), leaf lifespan (LL) and senescence rate (SR), whereas cultivars vs. carbon dioxide concentration affected forage mass (FM), root mass (RM), shoot/root ratio, LL and SR. Leaf elongation rate and SR were higher as the air temperature was raised. Increasing air temperature also promoted an increase in LAR, except for West Australian. High CO2 concentration provided greater SR of plants, except for Biloela. Cultivar West Australian had higher FM in relation to Biloela and Aridus when the CO2 concentration was increased to 550 µmol mol-1. West Australian was the only cultivar that responded with more forage mass when it was exposed to higher carbon dioxide concentrations, whereas Aridus had depression in forage mass. The increase in air temperatures affects morphogenetic responses of buffel grass, accelerating its vegetative development without increasing forage mass. Elevated carbon dioxide concentration changes productive responses of buffel grass.

O míldio da videira causado pelo fungo Plasmopora viticola é uma das doenças mais importantes da videira (Vitis vinifera) no sul do Brasil, causando desfolha e perdas econômicas. A avaliação da severidade de doenças é uma decisão importante na adoção de estratégias e táticas de controle. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi elaborar e validar uma escala diagramática para a avaliação da severidade do míldio da videira, respeitando as limitações da acuidade visual. A escala diagramática com sete níveis de severidade: 1, 3, 6, 12, 25, 50 e 75%, foi desenvolvida em duas versões preto-e-branco e em cores. As escalas foram avaliadas e validadas por oito avaliadores com e sem experiência prévia com o míldio da videira. Os avaliadores estimaram a severidade em 30 folhas de videira com diferentes níveis de severidade da doença, com e sem experiência no uso da escala diagramática. Severidades mínimas, médias e máximas foram obtidas pela Lei do estímulo visual de Weber-Fechner. A acurácia e a precisão foram analisadas por meio de regressão linear, confrontando os valores de severidade reais com os estimados. A severidade real foi estimada pelo programa ASSESS(r). As escalas proporcionaram bons níveis de acurácia (média 88%) e excelentes níveis de precisão (média de 95%). Os avaliadores apresentaram grande precisão e acurácia com o uso da escala diagramática. A escala colorida proporcionou estimativa melhor de precisão e acurácia do que a escala preto-e-branco. A escala diagramática proposta apresenta apropriada aplicabilidade para a avaliação do míldio da videira.

The downy mildew, caused by Plasmopora viticola, is one of the most important grapevine (Vitis vinifera) diseases in Southern Brazil, causing defoliation and economic losses. The evaluation of disease severity is an important decision for adoption of strategies and tactics for disease control. Therefore, the objective of this work was to elaborate and to validate a diagrammatic scale to assess downy mildew severity in grapevine, respecting the limitations of visual acuity. The diagrammatic scale with seven levels of disease severity of 1, 3, 6, 12, 25, 50 and 75% was developed in two versions of black-and-white and color scale. The scales were tested and validated by eight raters with and without previous experience with grapevine downy mildew. The raters estimated the severity of 30 grapevine leaves with different downy mildew severity, with and without the use of the scales. Minimum, intermediate and maximum severity levels were collected according to Weber-Fechner's stimulus-response law. The accuracy and precision were analyzed by linear regression between the actual and the estimated severity. Actual severity was assessed with ASSESS(r) Program. The scales provided good levels of accuracy (means of 88%) and excellent levels of precision (means of 95%). The raters showed great precision and accuracy when used the diagrammatic scale. The color scale provided more precise and accurate estimates than the black-and-white scale. The scale proposed in this work presented appropriate applicability for downy mildew evaluation in grapevine.

As atividades protetoras, curativas e erradicantes dos fungicidas azoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin+metiram, tebuconazole e ciproconazole foram avaliadas em relação à ferrugem, em casa de vegetação. Para a avaliação da atividade protetora, folhas de plantas de videira ´Niagara´ (Vitis labrusca) foram artificialmente inoculadas com uma suspensão de urediniósporos de P. euvitis aos quatro, oito e 14 dias após a pulverização dos fungicidas; e, para a avaliação das atividades curativas e erradicantes, as plantas foram pulverizadas com fungicidas aos quatro, oito e 14 dias após a inoculação do patógeno. A severidade da doença foi avaliada 14 dias após cada inoculação. Todos os fungicidas apresentaram excelente atividade protetora; no entanto, os fungicidas tebuconazole e ciproconazole proporcionam melhor controle curativo do que azoxystrobin e pyraclostrobin + metiram. Verificou-se também que todos os fungicidas testados reduziram significativamente a germinação dos urediniósporos produzidos nas folhas tratadas.

The protective, eradicative and curative activities of the fungicides azoxystrobin, tebuconazole, pyraclostrobin+metiram, and ciproconazole against grapevine rust, were determined in greenhouse. To evaluate the protective activity, leaves of potted ´Niagara´ (Vitis labrusca) vines were artificially inoculated with an urediniospore suspension of Phakopsora euvitis four, eight or forteen days after fungicidal spray; and to evaluate the curative and eradicative activities, leaves were sprayed with fungicides two, four or eight days after inoculation. Disease severity was assessed 14 days after each inoculation. All tested fungicides present excellent preventive activity against grapevine rust; however, tebuconazole and ciproconazole provide better curative activity than azoxystrobin and pyraclostrobin+metiram. It was observed also that all tested fungicides significantly reduced the germination of urediniospore produced on sprayed leaves.

Dados climáticos médios foram usados em conjunto com modelos simples de regressão que relacionam o coeficiente de cultura (Kc), a evapotranspiração de referência (ET0) e os graus dias acumulados (GDac) para quantificar o requerimento hídrico de videiras (RHV) para mesa e para vinho no Nordeste brasileiro. O RHV juntamente com dados de precipitação permitiu o desenvolvimento de um índice hídrico para videiras (IHV), o qual foi aplicado com dados médios de temperatura do ar para os ciclos produtivos na caracterização de diferentes graus de aptidão sob irrigação, variando-se as datas de poda. Para produção de uvas de mesa constatou-se que não há limitação térmica na região, entretanto maiores teores de açúcar, bem como maior produção, podem ser obtidos nos locais com valores de temperatura do ar mais elevados. Com relação a videiras para vinho, ocorre alguma limitação térmica para a elaboração de vinhos de boa qualidade, dependendo da data de poda, com altos teores de álcool e baixa acidez obtidos nas condições de elevados valores de temperatura do ar. A melhor época de poda para videiras de mesa é de julho a setembro, destacando-se as áreas ao oeste dos estados da Bahia, Pernambuco, Paraíba e quase todas as áreas dos estados do Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Piauí e Maranhão. Considerando-se videiras para vinho o período com melhor aptidão climática é quando a poda é realizada entre maio e junho, destacando-se os estados da Bahia, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Alagoas, e Sergipe, e ainda a parte sudoeste do Estado do Maranhão.

Long term weather data were used together with simple regression models involving crop coefficient (Kc), reference evapotranspiration (ET0) and accumulated degree days (DDac) to quantify the vineyard water requirement (VWR) of table and wine grapes in the Brazilian Northeast. VWR joined with precipitation, allowed the development of a vineyard water indicator (VWI), which was applied together with average values of air temperature for a growing season to characterize the agro-climatic aptitude. For table grapes it was observed that the region has no thermal limitation, however higher both sugar contents and grape yield would be obtained in the areas with higher values of air temperature. In relation to wine grape, it was observed that there are some thermal limitations for the wine quality, depending on the pruning date, being higher the alcohol content and lower acidity, in wines elaborated under conditions with higher values of air temperature. In relation to table grapes, the best pruning dates are between June and September, being highlighted the west areas of Bahia, Pernambuco, Paraíba and almost all areas of Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Piauí and Maranhão. Considering wine grapes, the best agro-climatic aptitude is for pruning dates from May to June, with highlights for the states of Bahia, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Alagoas and Sergipe, and a southeast area of Maranhão state.

This review discusses the present trends in studies on the impacts of climate change on plant diseases. Firstly, the approaches used for studying the potential effects of altered temperature, water availability, CO2 and O3 air concentrations, and UV-B radiation on components of the disease cycle are explained and discussed. Next, the impact of changes in climate patterns on the geographic and temporal distribution of diseases by integrating biological and epidemiological models into geographic and climate databases are assessed. Finally, adaptation strategies are discussed and areas where there is a recognized lack of knowledge are highlighted. The literature shows that different pathosystems respond in different ways to climate change. Thus, case-by-case studies on the responses of crop species or varieties and their diseases to climate change are necessary. In addition to that, wide-scale projections of disease risk are necessary in order to identify research priorities, whereas industry must be strategically directed and public policies developed to establish adaptation measures and to prevent potential food security crisis. Only by conducting long-term and multidisciplinary studies can we reduce the uncertainty regarding the effects of climate change on plant diseases.

Uma escala diagramática com seis níveis de severidade (1, 5, 12, 25, 50 e 75%) foi desenvolvida para quantificação da severidade da ferrugem da videira (Vitis spp.), causada pelo fungo Phakopsora euvitis. Duas versões da escala, em preto-e-branco e em cores, foram validadas por sete avaliadores sem experiência prévia com essa doença, os quais estimaram a severidade em 30 folhas com sintomas de ferrugem, com e sem auxílio das escalas. A severidade real foi determinada com o programa ASSESS®. A acurácia e a precisão foram analisadas por meio de regressão linear, confrontando valores de severidade reais com estimados. Com a utilização da escala, os avaliadores apresentaram melhores níveis de precisão e acurácia. O emprego da escala em cores proporcionou estimativas um pouco mais acuradas e precisas do que a escala em preto-e-branco.

A diagrammatic scale with six levels of disease severity (1, 5, 12, 25, 50 and 75%) was developed to assess grapevine (Vitis spp.) rust severity, caused by the fungus Phakopsora euvitis. Two versions of the scale, in black-and-white and in color, were validated by seven raters without previous experience with grapevine rust, who estimated the severity of 30 grapevine leaves showing rust symptoms, with and without the use of the scales. Precision and accuracy were determined by linear regression, relating the assessments using the scales to actual severity. Actual severity was assessed with the software ASSESS®. Using the diagrammatic scales, some raters were able to improve precision and accuracy. The color scale provided slightly more precise and accurate estimates than the black-and-white scale.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a resistência à ferrugem causada pelo fungo Phakopsora euvitis, em genótipos de videira, e a eficiência da infecção de acordo com a idade das folhas e concentração de inóculo. A avaliação foi feita em 15 genótipos, com base nos seguintes componentes de resistência: número de pústulas (urédios) por cm²; tamanho das pústulas; número de esporos produzidos por pústula; e período latente. Os componentes de resistência, com exceção do período latente, apresentaram grande variação quantitativa. A análise multivariada desses componentes diferenciou cinco grupos de genótipos. Os genótipos mais resistentes foram as cultivares porta-enxertos IAC313, IAC572 e IAC766, em que a eficiência da infecção foi baixa, com pústulas menores e menor produção de urediniósporos, além de reação de hipersensibilidade no tecido em torno das pústulas. O grau de infecção aumenta com o aumento na concentração do inóculo. A ferrugem coloniza, indiscriminadamente, folhas jovens e folhas maduras de videira.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic resistance of grape genotypes to rust, caused by the fungus Phakopsora euvitis, and the infection efficiency in relation to leaf age and inoculum concentration. The evaluation was carried out on 15 genotypes, based on the following resistance components: number of pustules (uredia) per cm², size of pustules; number of urediniospores produced per pustules; and latent period. The resistance components, except for the latent period, presented considerable quantitative variation. The multivariate analysis of resistance components discriminated five groups of genotypes. The more resistant genotypes were the rootstocks cultivars IAC313, IAC572, and IAC766, in which the infection efficiency was low, with small pustule sizes, and less urediniospores production, besides hypersensivity response on tissue surrounding the pustules. The infection increases with increasing of inoculum concentration. The rust colonizes young and mature grape leaves.

A giberela ou fusariose da espiga é uma das principais doenças do trigo e triticale no sul do Brasil. A espécie de fungo Fusarium graminearum é citada como agente causal da doença, muito embora, em outros países, outras espécies de Fusarium também estejam associadas à doença. No País, não existem relatos de levantamentos de espécies associadas à doença. O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar espécies de Fusarium associados à giberela do trigo e triticale procedentes do sul do Brasil, com base na morfologia e no emprego da reação da polimerase em cadeia (PCR) baseada em oligonucletídeos específicos para espécies de Fusarium. A patogenicidade dos isolados em trigo foi avaliada em espigas de plantas cultivadas em casa de vegetação. Os 20 isolados monospóricos analisados, obtidos de espigas doentes e sementes, foram identificados como F. graminearum.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) or scab is an important disease of wheat and triticale in Southern Brazil. The fungus Fusarium graminearum has been reported as the causal agent of this disease in Brazil even though other Fusarium species are also associated to FHB in other regions of the world. The aim of this study was to identify species of Fusarium associated with FHB on wheat and triticale in Southern Brazil. The identification was based on morphological features, and uppon polymerase chain reaction using species specific primers. The pathogenicity of the isolates in wheat was evaluated after inoculation of ears under greenhouse conditions. The twenty single spores isolates obtained from diseased ears and seeds were classified as F. graminearum.
